Indeed!

Anyone who thinks Formula 1 is (or could ever be) too safe needs to watch the programme that was on BBC4 at 9pm this evening. Although if you haven't seen the footage of David Purley trying to save Roger Williamson I would advise against it, it's genuinely disturbing.

Well, if it's not too safe, it is safe enough tbh, I think it should be a risk involved, but not to the point that makes it dangerous just to drive.

Then what is all this flap about trying to make cars more "difficult to drive" artificially by doing things like further reducing wing area? Why can't we have it the way it was in 1990, or '94, or '95? Few electronic nannies, the freedom to toy with different kinds of engine layouts (albeit one setup might be better than another later on and so everyone might gravitate towards that), and cars that really brought out the best in their drivers instead of cars bound by rules to seemingly go out of their way to hamstring them?
Some say he plans to put an S921 on the Goodwood 2012 run, and that he DOES know what Deletraz is doing.
All we know is...he's called Perry McCarthy!

...we'll never see an S921 at Goodwood, will we?

I've been reported in another forum. For the first time in my life, I think.

The issue? Two people were discussing about Hispania and the 107% rule, one of them said that he didn't understand why HRT had to pass the 107% when the FIA allowed them to enter F1 in the first place, and that's enough qualification. The other one said that if you are selected for a job it doesn't mean that you can't be fired later if you don't perform, and so HRT can't expect to race just because they were chosen two years ago.

The other guy said: "Oh, HRT were chosen less than half a year ago". I quoted him, changed his sentence to "more than one and a half", and added: "Fixed" right down it, as we do tons of times here. I don't know what he was thinking because HRT were chosen two years ago indeed.

Now, I've entered the forum today and seen that I had a new message. It looked strange. It was a post from the "half a year" guy telling me to remove the "fixed" post or he would report me  The thing is, I didn't remember what I had posted, searched for my post and... it wasn't there anymore! So he had reported me, possibly as soon as he wrote the PM, and... the admins deleted it :o

I guess it's the last time I'll visit the Autosport F1 Forums... I'm not going to miss that much actually.

Speaking of Deletraz, what is he up to nowdays?

Why are some tracks automatically rejected from use in F1, because they aren't up to a certain grade? Imola, for example. Shouldn't all that matters is the condition of the asphalt and pitlanes? All if which they have perfectly fine?

And why does a brand new track have to be built instead of using the already existing, promising tracks already in the country? Austin for example, there are so many tracks in the US, they could even just go back to Indy, which is a great track, but they build ANOTHER track instead, wasting millions of dollars.

My understanding is that the main limitation is the size of the run off areas and crash protection zones which can be established, so a car running off track can dissipate some of its kinetic energy, and to minimize the risk of debris being thrown back onto the track. There are also certain restrictions in terms of the type of safety barrier which can be used, medical facilities and so forth - secondary considerations that have an impact far beyond what the typical viewer can see on the screen.
The safety rating of the tracks by the FIA is pretty strict, which is why few venues qualify, and the problem is that a number of the tracks in the US would find it difficult and expensive to expand to meet the FIA's track requirements in terms of safety etc. It's ironic that you've mentioned Imola though - Imola is one circuit which does have a Grade 1T licence (so it can carry out F1 testing), and I understand that they could get a full Grade 1 licence if they wished reasonably easily.

He was racing sports cars. Last year he is listed to have entered the new FIA GT1 championship driving a Hexis AMR Aston Martin DB9. But I can't find if he actually entered a race or what went wrong since his name is not listened in any final standings. He was due to race with fellow rejects Bernoldi, Enge, Grosjean and sports car specialist Bartels. It featured other F1 drivers like Wendlinger, Zonta and Salo. Either he changed is name or he was successively replaced by several drivers incluiding Stephane Sarrazin (another reject!). After that, I cannot find any more traces of him...

They should up their grade, and we should make a return to Imola. I would much rather see them go back to Imola than to Rome.

Actually, old Imola was bad because it was to dangerous, old new Imola was bad because it was boring and new new Imola ia bad because it is equally boring but also dangerous again. All in all I don't miss it one bit - Monza I would miss greatly, though.
Also, that Rome Grand Prix won't happen anyway as everyone concerned, inculding the mayor of Rome have told the press a few weeks ago.

They removed the chicane before start and finish, thus creating a rather long and twisty but still flat-out straight down to the Tamburello chicanes with walls rather near on both sides. Worked well for GP2 Asia but produced several collisions in lower classes, notably Auto GP and a horrendous accident in Open GT that probably ended racer Marcel Tiemann's career.
It's probably fine as long as everything goes as it should and the drivers behave responsibly - but it seems to have a heightened potential for drama if they don't. And the races have not shown any sign of being more interesting now than they were on old-new Imola.
It still has the Grade T1 licence, though, as far as I'm aware, so F1 might well return one day if any of the involved parties finds the money and will to do so.

I don't think Ferrari own it, not like they own Fiorano at least. They use it heavily for testing (obviously less than they used to), but it is not a private track and the annual MotoGP race leads me to believe F1 could find a home there.
The fastest lap was set by 'Big' Alex Zanardi twenty years ago, in F3000 I think - a 1:38.6. Any ideas what this would roughly be in a modern F1 car, anyone?

Given their recovery last year, I think it is a bit too soon to write them off... Even if they end up having a rough year, it is highly possible that they can come back next year.

Ferrari now remind me of Ferrari in the late 80s-early 90s. Especially when you look at these comparisons I put together.

1989: Starts with all new car. Revolutionary component (In this case semi-automatic gearbox) proves headache all season. Distant third in championship.
1990: Start with evolution of 1989 car. Sign on one of best drivers of the time who leads them to championship challenge only to fall short.
1991: Start with evolution of 1990 car. Team fails to win race and star driver is sacked with one race to go.

2009: Starts with all new car. Revolutionary component (In this case KERS in relation to brake balance) proves headache all season. Distant fourth in championship
