OK, design a track for F1 on the Isle of Man. Can be a street track in one of the large towns (Douglas, Ramsey, Castletown. Maybe not Peel though - VERY narrow streets there). Or use Ronaldsway or Jurby airfields. Or a brand new track in open fields. Just don't demolish any buildings whatsoever. Specify where the pitlane would be. Length - anything from 2 to 4.5 miles. Oh, and keep it vaguely realistic - best to avoid Ballaugh Bridge...

I didn't technically destroy any buildings, but I did encircle some; I've built the track on a few people's farms, which you can't say is unrealistic on its own.

It's a good choice of location (as are the others). I did say open fields were allowed, and I intended farms to come under that definition. And buildings on the infield are also fine. So no problems!

Right, I knew I forgot something! It's at Claughbane Walk after we chopped some trees down. Trees aren't buildings, are they?

As for the trees, they certainly don't have a central nervous system (a vegan told me that that was the reason that she could eat plants but not animals). But this discussion does remind me of Roald Dahl's short story, "The Sound Machine"...

Pitlane is inside the start/finish straight, entry at just after the 3.2 km / 2 mile point and exit into the sweeping right-hander at the end of the straight.

Well, there's room enough there to widen the track and lay a pit lane parallel to it, I guess.

Was just coming to this thread to say that I was going to put some judgments up in the next few hours.

I really don't like providing feedback as I never can tell how people are going to take it. I don't like receiving bad feedback personally, but paranoia creeps in if I don't get any at all. So here are my verdicts below. A few comments as to what I was looking for, plus a bit of explanation as to what I meant as 'realistic' above. PS I am not a treehugger myself, but they can be unsafe near a reacetrack, and some places (or NIMBYs) can be difficult about their removal, so that had to be a consideration, I felt.

8. Benetton

Nice track, one I would like to drive. BUT… The whole area is a wood/tree plantation. The whole area would have to be cleared and dig roots up, etc. Cannot leave many in place (thinking of Jim Clark and Allan Simonsen here). If the track was perfectly replicated in open fields/on farmland, this could have been a podium effort, so a good effort. I just don’t see anybody chopping down hundreds and hundreds of trees though. Sorry.

7. novitopoli

Nice choice of location. Some high speed sections with some twisty bits. Just a bit worried about the amount of run off available at the long right hander near the Jurby Karting (at about the 1 ½ mile point). Could easily end up on another section of track ½ mile earlier? Might just be my perception, but…

Ah, Foxdale, home of the Foxdale Auto Racing Team (FART)! And I love the A3 – I hit 90 mph legally along that road. And no trees to be demolished to build the track. But some will have to be cleared for run-off (see above). But did you mean to have a hairpin in the middle of a cul-de-sac at the 3.3 (or so) mile point? That would prove more problematic that the A1GP Beijing street race… Otherwise,…

5. More Blue Flags

Lovely track, but you build it THERE and don’t incorporate the Cronk-ny-Mona corner of the TT track?!?!?!?

Love the fact that you DID incorporate the TT track (including my favourite corner – the Ramsey hairpin – very scenic, particularly behind the camera they use for film footage, plus uphill braking) and a promenade section. But part of the reason for asking where the pitlane would go would be to see if there would also be room for the paddock nearby. You’re having to clear space for the pit lane to fit there, so…

Past a quay, and twice past the castle in Castletown, until recently the capital of the Isle. Would look nice on TV.

2. Simtek

Plenty of space for the paddock (has been used as a gathering area for the commencement of the Rally Isle of Man), some good high-speed and tight corners, did not try to use the Manx TT pitlane (really too small for F1, but could viably be rebuilt as in Monaco I suppose). And it would have been difficult to use both Quarterbridge/Bray Hill and the promenade given the distance constraint. BUT I wish you had just slightly extended the track to have run along the picturesque North Quay or South Quay…

The track I would most love to drive round. Plenty of space for run-off. Plenty of space for paddock and pitlane. Good access along main roads, close to main towns, and close to the airport if teams needed to fly stuff in. Typical GP track length. Cannot find fault at all. Good effort!

At first I thought, hey, why not make some rules that would spur creativity instead of restrict it? Like it's obvious most track designers would put n over here, so say you can't do n, and we'll get something unique!

This turned out to be too hard, so instead I'm doing the opposite. There are two rules:
1. Use only existing roads, except for going through the middle of dual carriageways or roundabouts
2. Make the track inside Argentina, but 65 km or more away from Parque Centenario in Buenos Aires

That's it. Track width, paddock, runoff, it doesn't matter. Only the polygon of your track will be judged. No minimum or maximum length. Sound easy? Well...

You know how they moved the Dakar Rally from Africa to South America? Think of this entry as being that, only with the Targa Florio. Includes beautiful lakes, the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, forests, towns, some very long straights, a couple of fast sweepers, quite a few dangerous hairpins and incorporates the famous Ruta 40.
