Plus, it may not be the best thing ever, beings as I could well have a shot at the championship in my 1996 season.

If Christopherson wins it, he will have earned it, having done his time in bad machinery, unlike some champions from the future, coughDaniel Melrosecough.

I'll use the "the cars were harder to drive in my day" line as well

Even though I wasn't even born back in 1991

ROUND 14 - 1995 EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX - Nurburgring

PRE-RACE
Pacific have announced that they will withdraw from Formula 1 at the end of the current championship, they were considering pulling out earlier but Lavaggi's sponsorship has just kept them going until Adelaide, although his pace may prevent the team from starting races ahead of the rookie Forti team. Pierluigi Martini has also announced his retirement, effective after Adelaide. Pedro Lamy, the only ever Portuguese driver to score a point will replace him in 1996.

QUALIFYING
This is a new circuit for me, although the same can be said for everyone with the exception of Gerhard Berger, when he just missed out on points there in 1985. So this is a fairly level playing field, although Frentzen will have the home advantage in the inter-team battle at Sauber. I was relatively pleased with my efforts, breaking into the top 10 after not doing so for a while, although i'm still slower than Frentzen, who qualified 7th, and was even 3rd for a while. Forti once again struggled as they locked out the back row, Papis out-qualified Inoue for the first time, whilst at the front, Mark Blundell was an impressive 5th place for McLaren. Williams were dominant once again, with Schumacher then a distance ahead of everyone else.

1. Hill 1.22.104
2. Coulthard 1.22.266
3. Schumacher 1.22.944

7. Frentzen 1.24.109

9. Irvine 1.24.389
10. Christopherson 1.24.426
11. Barrichello 1.24.451

RACE
I made a pretty good start, and was up to 7th by the end of the lap, getting the better of Hakkinen and Herbert at the start, and moved up again as Mark Blundell spun off thanks to a puncture. At the start of the third lap, I dived down the inside of Frentzen, as he was holding me up a bit. One of his wheels loosened on lap 14, although he managed to get back. Coulthard suffered an engine failure early on, whilst leading. I unfortunately didn't move up to 5th, as Johnny Herbert passed me 1 lap earlier. My mid-race stint was not great, and I lost out to Mika Hakkinen, until he had a water leak, promoting me to the points again. Gerhard Berger was slow in the second half of the race, and dropped back to 4th, which would become 5th after losing out to Johnny Herbert in the Benetton. Damon Hill's transmission failed just 8 laps from home whilst leading in the Williams. This handed the lead to Jean Alesi, who was being closed in on by Michael Schumacher. Alesi held off, to win the European Grand Prix, with both Benettons on the podium. Berger fourth, I was 5th, and Rubens Barrichello beat Eddie Irvine to the last point. Frentzen could only manage 11th after his woes early on in the race.

1. Alesi 1hr 41m 33.865s
2. Schumacher +1.019s

ROUND 15 - 1995 PACIFIC GRAND PRIX - TI Aida

Jack Christopherson wrote:Thankfully, this will be the last time we will race at this circuit, I really don't enjoy driving it, unless I was in a go-kart. Obviously I would love to score more points here, but I can't see that happening, let's just see how qualifying goes.

QUALIFYING
Another race, another sterling qualifying effort for David Coulthard, who spearheaded an all Williams front row, proving that he's worthy of the championship from the day of his debut. Are we seeing another legend in the making, and could we see 6 different world champions in 6 years. Senna in 1990, Alesi in 1991, Mansell in 1992, Prost in 1993 and Schumacher in 1994. Frentzen was the other star of qualifying, and will start in a brilliant 6th, just ahead of the two Jordans. Ferrari were thereabouts in qualifying, but slower than Schumacher, Hill and Coulthard. I wasn't completely happy with 12th, although I wasn't expecting anything good. I split the two McLarens, behind Blundell but ahead of Hakkinen. Could Coulthard's switch to McLaren be a mistake. The Fortis were right at the back, miles off the pace.

1. Coulthard 1.18.627
2. Hill 1.19.020
3. Schumacher 1.19.313

6. Frentzen 1.19.972

11. Blundell 1.20.744
12. Christopherson 1.21.255
13. Hakkinen 1.21.262

RACE
I made a fairly decent start, although by the second lap, I dropped to the very back of the field with a loose wheel. Eddie Irvine had a nightmare start whilst Panis spun to the back of the grid after a few turns, he started 9th. Frentzen and Barrichello were keeping up with the front running cars, with Rubens Barrichello actually putting a move on Gerhard Berger for 5th place. Coulthard could have saw his championship hopes disintegrate, after crashing at the end of lap 11. Damon Hill took the lead of the race. Mika Hakkinen was another early retirement, with an engine failure in his McLaren, the Mercedes powerplant once again proving to be fairly unreliable. For about 10 laps, I was battling Max Papis, who despite starting 19th just ahead of teammate Inoue in the uncompetitive Footwork, was actually having a decent race. Eventually, I came out on top. Lap 56 saw Ukyo Katayama pass teammate Mika Salo for 10th place, although it also saw Damon Hill's championship hopes gone, after an engine failure. Michael Schumacher was dominating the race after the two Williams were out. Rubens Barrichello was having possibly his best ever race, and he then passed Jean Alesi for 2nd place on lap 74. Michael Schumacher took the win, and needed only 1 point to take a second consecutive World Championship, with Benetton needing 3 points to take the Constructors Championship. Both Ferraris took points, with my teammate Frentzen an impressive 5th. I was in 11th on the last lap, but spinning meant that Mark Blundell in the McLaren took that position. McLaren moved down to 7th in the Constructors Standings, staking their claim for Reject of the Year.

1. Schumacher 1hr 54m 32.723s
2. Barrichello +29.010s
3. Alesi +33.931s

Michael Schumacher wrote:I believe I can clinch my second world championship here, as I only need 1 point. For sure, David has a chance as he is a very quick driver, but I am going to go all out, not just to get the point, as I race to win.

David Coulthard wrote:Obviously it is unlikely I will win the championship this year, but I still have a chance, so i'm not going to give up. I'm still going for victory this year.

Jack Christopherson wrote:I'm looking forward to this race, a real test of driver skill, the car looks good, so me and Heinz-Harald should be able to score some points, to keep our hopes of 4th place alive. Our aim at the start of the season was 5th, so this would be a bonus.

Eddie Irvine wrote:Obviously people are expecting me to step up a gear now i'm signed to Ferrari for next year, and that I have experience at this circuit, so i'm expecting to be scoring points this weekend, and to help Jordan towards 4th place.

ROUND 16 - 1995 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX - Suzuka

QUALIFYING
The track was wet, but it wasn't raining, so intermediates were the way to go. The key to success here was finding the grip on the road, two teams clearly done this. One of them was Benetton, the other team was Jordan. Schumacher was supreme in qualifying, where the only driver to get within 2 seconds was Mika Hakkinen, who was 0.8 seconds off pole time. A rare high in what has been a dismal season for the Woking based team. Irvine was 3rd, Herbert 4th and Barrichello 5th. Frentzen managed 6th place, whilst I was content with 14th, as I could not seem to find any grip, especially in sector 1. The Pacific drivers were clearly the slowest, over 3 seconds off Alesi, who had a nightmare session to end up 20th. Papis and the Tyrrells got in the top half, whilst Williams struggled.

1. Schumacher 1.49.247
2. Hakkinen 1.50.071
3. Irvine 1.51.334

6. Frentzen 1.52.366

13. Panis 1.54.569
14. Christopherson 1.55.175
15. Brundle 1.55.355

RACE
With a grid this mixed up, the race was bound to be exciting. Michael Schumacher got away well, surprising few people. Irvine lost out to Johnny Herbert whilst Martin Brundle and Mark Blundell collided at the start. Unfortunately reliability problems plagued me yet again on the second lap, after I worked my way up to 9th place, transmission troubles ended any chance of points. On lap 12, Johnny Herbert passed Mika Hakkinen at 130R on the inside. Benetton's hopes of becoming Constructors Champions were slightly increased when Damon Hill spun off at Degner 1 when he suffered an oil leak. Mika Hakkinen's engine died on him approximately half way through the race. On lap 35, David Coulthard's engine also blew, handing Michael Schumacher the 1995 Drivers Championship, and making him a double World Champion. Benetton were cruising to a 1-2, with Irvine 3rd and Frentzen 4th. The only battle going on towards the end of the race was the battle for 5th between Alesi, who was charging through the field, Berger, Salo and Panis. Alesi pulled away with a few laps to go. Panis and Salo pressured Berger for the final point. Frentzen suffered a puncture from 4th place towards the end of the penultimate lap, he pitted for repairs, and didn't lose any places. Michael Schumacher won from Johnny Herbert, whilst Berger held off pressure from Olivier Panis and Mika Salo.

1. Schumacher 1hr 40m 24.734s
2. Herbert +15.643s
3. Irvine +39.735s
4. Frentzen +1m 24.832s
5. Alesi +1 Lap

7. Panis +1 Lap
8. Salo +1 Lap

11. Badoer +2 Laps

13. Martini +3 Laps
14. Montermini +3 Laps

ROUND 17 - 1995 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX - Adelaide

QUALIFYING
Pacific could not qualify for their final race in Formula 1, as the Forti team beat them to the final grid spots for the season ender. Given their qualifying form, it's not really surprising that Williams locked out the front row, with Damon Hill securing pole position. McLaren had a disastrous session, with Mark Blundell qualifying 10th for his final race, whilst Mika Hakkinen's car problems meant that he qualified dead last. Gerhard Berger also incurred troubles and was only 15th. I was slightly disappointed with 11th, although qualifying hasn't been my strong point this season. Both Jordans were in the top 8, whilst Frentzen was 6th. Luca Badoer had signed for the Forti team for 1996, although in his last outing for Minardi, he qualified 13th.

1. Hill 1.20.499
2. Coulthard 1.20.640
3. Alesi 1.20.894

6. Frentzen 1.21.201

10. Blundell 1.22.978
11. Christopherson 1.23.432
12. Panis 1.23.643

RACE
And we were underway, Eddie Irvine made a bad start, and my maneuverability was an advantage, as it saw me move up to 8th. Meanwhile, Coulthard took Hill's lead at the start. At the end of the Brabham straight on lap 1, Michael Schumacher moved up to 3rd, at Alesi's expense. The order then was Coulthard, Hill, Schumacher, Alesi, Barrichello, Frentzen, Herbert and Christopherson. Luca Badoer's efforts were all for nothing, just like in Hungary, as his race was over after a matter of laps. Despite my experience, I had a nomination for "Severe Brain Fade", as going into the final turn on lap 16, I dived down the inside of Johnny Herbert, and it didn't work well. Ironically, Johnny Herbert was Sauber bound himself. Mark Blundell's career ended with a water leak in his unreliable McLaren, Mika Hakkinen did not last much longer, as the Mercedes engine blew into flames. Rubens Barrichello's wheel came loose and the Jordan driver lost 5th place. This moved Gerhard Berger into the points, although Olivier Panis was chasing hard, and wanted that last point. Going into the last lap, Damon Hill had caught David Coulthard, and was putting the pressure on. Hill slipstreamed the Scot down the Brabham straight, and made the move to take the win, and set the fastest lap of the race in the process.

1. Hill 1hr 51m 53.274s
2. Coulthard +1.227s
3. Schumacher +45.821s
4. Alesi +59.019s

ROUND 1 - 1996 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX - Melbourne

QUALIFYING
My first race at a top team, this was certainly interesting. With qualifying not being my strong point, it's not very surprising that I didn't take pole position. I could only manage 5th. Michael Schumacher took pole on his debut for Ferrari ahead of Damon Hill in the Williams. The surprises were Irvine struggling, Frentzen within the top 10, Giancarlo Fisichella 16th in the Minardi, in his very first race, and Luca Badoer putting the Forti 18th.

1. Schumacher 1.34.743
2. Hill 1.35.091
3. Coulthard 1.35.325
4. Berger 1.35.459
5. Christopherson 1.35.960
6. Hakkinen 1.36.418

RACE
My race ended very early on, as I made a good start, but was involved in an incident with Mika Hakkinen in what was a 50/50. Both of us were out immediately. Schumacher kept his lead over Hill at the start, whilst Katayama retired on the first lap with transmission trouble. Andrea Montermini was the next to go, with an engine failure in the back of his underfunded Forti, Badoer only lasted until lap 6. Gerhard Berger spun whilst in 4th place on lap 22. On lap 31, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Martin Brundle collided whilst racing for position, both were out. Jean Alesi took 4th position. Hill was chasing Schumacher but was losing ground. Jean Alesi was battling David Coulthard for 3rd place, and took the position in the second round of stops. Gerhard Berger was struggling for the rest of the race, and on lap 48, he was even passed by Johnny Herbert for 5th place. Benetton, Minardi and Footwork were the only teams to get both cars to the finish.

1. Schumacher 1hr 35m 26.834s
2. Hill +29.024s
3. Alesi +46.304s
4. Coulthard +51.732s
5. Herbert +1 Lap
6. Berger +1 Lap
7. Barrichello +1 Lap
8. Panis +1 Lap
9. Fisichella +2 Laps
10. Verstappen +2 Laps
11. Lamy +2 Laps
12. Rosset +3 Laps

Fastest Lap: Schumacher 1.34.519

REJECT OF THE RACE: Forti - Both cars out after 6 laps.

ROUND 2 - 1996 BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX - Interlagos

QUALIFYING
It was dry, with no signs of rain in sight for the entire session, suiting me quite well. I have always ran well at the circuit too, and it showed, as I managed to score pole position, ahead of Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill. It was the first time in a while that I had even outqualified my teammate. It took a few laps to get into my stride, but in the end, I managed to put a superb lap together. The two McLarens qualified 4th and 5th, and unsurprisingly Forti locked out the back row, with Minardi just ahead.

1. Christopherson 1.18.349
2. Schumacher 1.18.625
3. Hill 1.18.923

RACE
The race got underway, and I kept my lead into the first corner and opened up a reasonable gap to Schumacher. At the back, Mika Salo stalled and his race was over before it really began. The order after the first few laps was Christopherson, Schumacher, Coulthard, Hill, Berger, Hakkinen, Alesi, Irvine, Barrichello and Panis. Michael Schumacher had a rare retirement after about 25 laps, with an engine failure. After the first round of stops, not much changed. Damon Hill put a move on David Coulthard going into the last real corner to take 2nd place. Leaving the pits on my second stop, I braked too late and lost my front wing, meaning I had to pit again. I dropped down to 3rd place, although I had little chance of catching Hill and Coulthard. Panis put a move on Barrichello on lap 59 for 8th place, although it wasn't going to give him any points. It looked like it would rain for the last few laps, but it didn't, and Damon Hill took the chequered flag whilst I only managed 3rd, and was pondering what could have happened. McLaren are only 1 point off their 1995 tally, after just 2 races.

1. Hill 1hr 36m 34.412s
2. Coulthard +7.682s

ROUND 3 - 1996 ARGENTINE GRAND PRIX - Buenos Aires

QUALIFYING
It's a fun track to drive, but I can't quite get to grips with it, and it was fairly clear come qualifying, as I was only 7th fastest on Saturday. Apart from that, the usual suspects were at the front with Hill on pole position this time around, although Schumacher gave him a run for his money. Panis was impressive in 8th, even ahead of Coulthard who was impressing at McLaren. Berger was an excellent 3rd, whilst Footwork struggled badly, Verstappen only down in 17th, whilst Rosset was slowest of them all, even behind the Fortis.

1. Hill 1.31.255
2. Schumacher 1.31.634
3. Berger 1.31.980

6. Irvine 1.33.012
7. Christopherson 1.33.075
8. Panis 1.33.472

RACE
Schumacher made a superb start and took the lead from Hill. I made a fairly good start, although that was partly due to Berger not getting off the line at the start and his race was virtually over, he managed 3 laps before calling it a day. Irvine and Coulthard came together at the start after Coulthard got off the line quickly, so the order then was Schumacher, Hill, Alesi, Hakkinen, Christopherson and Panis. Alesi's race was ended on lap 22 when his engine spontaneously combusted (I wanted to sound intelligent there). I was up to 4th place then, although not much else happened in my race. Ricardo Rosset plowed into Luca Badoer's Forti and ended both of their races, it was easily enough to earn him Reject of the Race. The race was fairly processional from then on, and Schumacher took a relatively easy win ahead of Hill and Hakkinen. I could only salvage 4th after a bad qualifying, but nevertheless, it's still points on the board.

1. Schumacher 1hr 55m 34.223s
2. Hill +29.525s
3. Hakkinen +37.638
4. Christopherson +45.129s

11. Katayama +1 Lap
12. Montermini +2 Laps

Fastest Lap: Hill 1.30.989

ROUND 4 - 1996 EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX - Nurburgring

QUALIFYING
Another superb qualifying by me, and I felt I deserved this pole position, the second one this season, and the third one of my career. There were a few surprises, Eddie Irvine in a very disappointing 11th on the grid, whilst Schumacher was 2nd. Mika Salo gave Tyrrell something to smile about, with an excellent 8th for the team, could they score their first points since Argentina 1995? Jos Verstappen made the top 10 as well in his Footwork, the team were still looking for their first points since 1994.

1. Christopherson 1.20.635
2. Schumacher 1.20.989
3. Hill 1.21.426

RACE
The track was wet, but not wet enough for drivers to change to inters or wets. This decision caused a lot of chaos at the start of the race, as drivers struggled to keep the car in a straight line, myself included. Schumacher made a good start, but I couldn't do the same. At the start, there was a fairly big pile-up, Schumacher being one of the only drivers to get off scott free. My race ended immediately, with the others being Herbert, Montermini, Verstappen, Hakkinen and Barrichello. Other drivers suffered damage to their cars including both Tyrrells and Diniz. Every driver still in the race put inters on. Michael Schumacher pulled out a gap, whilst Damon Hill was the next to retire after spinning off. The damage to their cars at the start could well have cost Tyrrell some points, as they were running well during the race. The order was Schumacher, Coulthard, Alesi, Berger, Irvine, Panis, Frentzen, Brundle, Salo and Katayama. On lap 41, Katayama passed his higher-rated teammate for 9th. Thanks to losing so much time at the start, Diniz was last for a while, although he made progress by passing Badoer, then Rosset, although he couldn't catch the Minardis. Badoer then retired from 14th. Fisichella pulled out with hydraulic problems with 13 laps to go, whilst in a creditable 11th. Michael Schumacher looked like he could win yet again, but hydraulic failure also ended his race, like it did to Fisichella. Schumacher's retirement came with just 6 laps to go, David Coulthard inherited the win, to give McLaren a much needed win. Benetton got both cars on the podium, Irvine salvaged 4th place, Panis scored points again, whilst Brundle scored his first point of the season.

1. Coulthard 1hr 51m 45.621s
2. Alesi +19.019s
3. Berger +34.762s
4. Irvine +1m 05.249s

ROUND 5 - 1996 SAN MARINO GRAND PRIX - Imola

QUALIFYING
It rained throughout the session, was a wet qualifying my chance to score pole and get a few cars between myself and the other frontrunners? Not quite, I couldn't quite reach pole position, that went to Michael Schumacher, but at least I was ahead of Hill in the sister Williams car. David Coulthard's effort was rewarded with 3rd on the grid, with the second Ferrari of Eddie Irvine in 4th. Benetton were disappointed, as neither car made the top 6, Rubens Barrichello was impressive with 8th, whilst the star was undoubtedly Giancarlo Fisichella, who was 12th in his Minardi, a great effort from the Italian rookie, in front of his home fans.

1. Schumacher 1.37.117
2. Christopherson 1.37.575
3. Coulthard 1.37.829

5. Hill 1.38.325

RACE
I made a decent start, and I made my intentions clear to Schumacher, I wanted that first place. I couldn't get it at the start though. Rubens Barrichello moved up to 7th and was running ahead of the Benettons. Hill made a poor start and lost out to Hakkinen. On lap 5, I got better drive out of Villeneuve than Schumacher did, and made my move going into Tosa, and I never looked back. Eddie Irvine was out fairly early on with a loose wheel, an unfortunate way to end what had been a good weekend for him. I kept a reasonable gap from Schumacher, whilst Coulthard kept up with him, until his race ended prematurely with an engine failure. McLaren clearly still have some work to do with reliability. Rubens Barrichello quitely retired approximately halfway through the race after looking promising all weekend. Gerhard Berger had a slow in-lap and lost out to Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who was looking feisty, this gifted the German a point. I withheld the pressure from Michael Schumacher, to take the chequered flag, and to take my first win in Formula One.

1. Christopherson 1hr 36m 45.359s
2. Schumacher +6.584s
3. Hakkinen +29.410s
4. Hill +45.261s

I hope so, who knows, although i'm terrible at the next two circuits. Monaco and Barcelona. To be honest, i'll be thrilled with points from those two circuits.

That was epic!

By the way, if you've updated the stats on my wiki, I only have 3 pole positions, not 4.

ROUND 6 - 1996 MONACO GRAND PRIX - Monte Carlo

QUALIFYING
I was quite disappointed with qualifying, as I was only 6th fastest by the end of the session. Championship leader Michael Schumacher took pole position ahead of the McLarens. Hill was 4th, whilst my time split the two Benettons. I was quicker than Berger, but slower than Alesi. Johnny Herbert was impressive with 8th, Jos Verstappen also impressed in his Footwork with 13th. Eddie Irvine was an early contender for Reject of the Race with 12th in qualifying.

1. Schumacher 1.23.157
2. Coulthard 1.23.394
3. Hakkinen 1.23.545
4. Hill 1.23.563
5. Alesi 1.24.154
6. Christopherson 1.24.206
7. Berger 1.24.593

RACE
The race was underway, and I made a pretty bad start, losing out to Gerhard Berger at the start. Although that wouldn't be a problem, as there was a lot of carnage at turn 1, involving Benettons, McLarens, Hill, Schumacher, Panis and Frentzen, all drivers out of the race immediately. I then took the lead, after a careful start, Irvine was 2nd and Herbert was 3rd. I felt that the only way to win was to drive carefully. Early on, Andrea Montermini had to pit for repairs, and was tagged by Eddie Irvine when being lapped by him, Irvine lost his front wing and was relegated to 3rd. Rubens Barrichello was looking for a podium finish, before his brakes failed going into turn 1, and ending his race instantly. Johnny Herbert showed some pace and was challenging me for a while, until he spun at the exit of Nouvelle Chicane, he suffered some minor damage, and could continue after a wing change. He was down to 5th, although that would soon become 4th when Eddie Irvine's car broke down. Giancarlo Fisichella then inherited 2nd place in the Minardi with Jos Verstappen 3rd in the Footwork. Verstappen then passed Fisichella at Ste. Devote on lap 58 for 2nd place. Johnny Herbert was pursuing both Fisichella and Verstappen, but was unsuccessful. With 6 laps to go, Verstappen's car had a hydraulics problem and he had to retire, after a superb effort. He was one of only 6 cars left, so at least he walked away with a point. Both Minardis were running in the points and were guaranteed to have their best ever race. With 4 laps left, it started to rain lightly, although it had very little effect. I somehow managed to avoid everything and score my second win, and I subsequently took the championship lead.

1. Christopherson 1hr 57m 23.567s
2. Fisichella +49.374s
3. Herbert +1m 03.205s
4. Lamy +1 Lap
5. Salo +1 Laps
6. Verstappen +6 Laps

Fastest Lap: Herbert 1.25.586s

ROUND 7 - 1996 SPANISH GRAND PRIX - Barcelona

QUALIFYING
Normality was the order of the day at Barcelona, although for once, I was actually competitive around this circuit, which I have always been bad at, and found slightly boring. When I meant normality, I meant normal for this season, as Schumacher, Hill and myself were the top 3 in qualifying, with Schumacher taking yet another pole position. I managed to beat Hill once again, as I was on a mission to prove myself as a genuine championship contender. Personally, I felt I was getting the job done.

1. Schumacher 1.26.833
2. Christopherson 1.27.088
3. Hill 1.27.132

RACE
I made an ordinary start, and Hill got the better of me, worse still, I ran quite wide at turn 3 and dropped to 10th place, behind all of the drivers in the top 4 teams, Barrichello and Panis. 10th soon became 9th after Rubens Barrichello spun off early on. I passed Panis for 8th on lap 6, although he managed to put up some fight. I couldn't get past Berger until the first round of pit stops, but I also got past Alesi then too. Then, 1995 championship rivals Hill and Schumacher came together, and both had to retire. This benefitted me, as I was now up to 4th, and set to extend my championship lead. David Coulthard's hydraulics in his McLaren gave up, and he had to relinquish 2nd place, McLaren were running 1-2, with Hakkinen leading. Alesi retired quietly with an engine failure whilst in 4th place. Panis was hounding Berger's 4th place, and was even ahead of him for a while, before dropping back and eventually retiring. Mika Hakkinen won the race for McLaren, with Eddie Irvine 2nd and myself 3rd, in a somewhat lucky podium, thanks to the misfortunes of others. Berger finished 4th, whilst Martin Brundle and Johnny Herbert quietly drove into the points.

1. Hakkinen 1hr 33m 36.843s
2. Irvine +5.342s
3. Christopherson +21.296s

ROUND 8 - 1996 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX - Montreal

PRE-RACE
Ferrari have made a significant aerodynamic change to the front of the car, finally adapting to the higher nose that seems to be the trend in Formula 1. They were the last team to do so, and it was made as an attempt to overtake Williams. Forti were also rumoured to be on the brink of extinction, but the Shannon group has saved the team from extinction.

QUALIFYING
Qualifying went as planned, as I scored another pole position, hoping this time to convert it to a win. Unfortunately for me, Michael Schumacher was on the front row with me, and his starts have been good this season. Coulthard and Berger were on row 2, meaning that the top 4 drivers were from 4 different teams. This was encouraging for Benetton, who have really struggled this season.

1. Christopherson 1.19.805
2. Schumacher 1.20.423
3. Coulthard 1.20.657

6. Hill 1.21.019

RACE
The track was wet, but there was no rain in sight, so I decided to opt for inters. At the start, I managed to keep ahead of Schumacher and co. Unfortunately for Hill, he was forced off after being nudged by Irvine, and came back onto the track into Rosset's path. It obviously ended badly. On lap 8, all of the frontrunning drivers decided to pit for slicks, as the track was bone dry. I opted to stay out an extra lap in order to try and build a gap ahead of the other drivers, although that was a terrible gamble, as I ended up down in 9th place, also behind the two Jordans. I managed to pass Brundle on lap 27, although I didn't last much longer, as I slid into the Wall of Champions on lap 31. A dismal race for the Williams team. Gerhard Berger led for a good few laps, although this was mostly down to strategy rather than raw speed. Schumacher eventually reappeared in first place, where he stayed until the end of the race to win the Canadian Grand Prix. Eddie Irvine was running a strong 4th place until his engine gave way with 9 laps to go. Both Fortis done well to make it to the finish, Montermini beating Badoer, a rare occurrence this season.

1. Schumacher 1hr 45m 52.636s
2. Berger +11.215s
3. Alesi +49.263s
4. Coulthard +55.038s

ROUND 9 - 1996 FRENCH GRAND PRIX - Magny-Cours

PRE-RACE
Rumours are strengthening that Giancarlo Fisichella will be joining Jordan for 1997, as his strong performances in the Minardi, including his podium at Monaco. This has also led speculation that Martin Brundle will retire at the end of the season, although he could theoretically continue if Barrichello doesn't stay at Jordan. Also, the FIA has approved entries for two new teams to compete in the 1997 season. Stewart Grand Prix and MasterCard Lola. Also, McLaren are talking up their chances of a championship challenge for next year.

QUALIFYING
After dropping behind Schumacher in the championship, I found myself overdriving the car, and it cost me. I could only qualify 4th, although I wasn't too far off pole. Damon Hill was on the front row, and needed a strong result to maintain a chance at the title this year. Coulthard was an impressive 3rd, with Hakkinen 6th. The star was Rubens Barrichello, who planted his Jordan in 5th place. A great result, for this year's unluckiest driver so far, driving for this year's unluckiest team so far.

1. Schumacher 1.19.032
2. Hill 1.19.257
3. Coulthard 1.19.431
4. Christopherson 1.19.844
5. Barrichello 1.20.110

RACE
The track was once again wet, with no more rain in sight. Same scenario as Canada, and Europe before that. At the start, Verstappen never got off the line, as he had a clutch failure, everyone else got off the line cleanly. Unfortunately for some, there was some drama at the Adelaide hairpin, Coulthard, Hakkinen, Schumacher and Barrichello involved. Hakkinen was the only one able to continue, albeit without a front wing. Irvine, Berger, Panis and Katayama made gambles starting on slicks, and they kept out of trouble whilst the track dried. On the opening laps, the order was Hill, Christopherson, Frentzen, Brundle, Irvine and Salo. Hill was pulling away from me, as he just found more speed. Hill and myself pitted on the same lap, although I wasn't held up much. I wound up in 8th place, the top 10 were Hill, Irvine, Panis, Hakkinen, Fisichella, Katayama, Berger, Christopherson, Brundle and Salo. Fisichella then pitted for slicks to move me up to 7th. Katayama was in 5th place, until Berger made a half-arsed attempt at passing him at the Imola Chicane on lap 39. Both drivers retired, and I was lucky to avoid Katayama's wheel. I then chased down Hakkinen and passed him at Adelaide hairpin. Hill was storming away, with Eddie Irvine in 2nd place. I was chasing down Panis slowly in the closing laps, mostly thanks to Rosset blocking him severely. Panis was furious with the Brazilian. Hakkinen kept up with me, and looked like he could take the podium position. I could not pass Panis, as he held onto an extremely popular podium finish for the likable Frenchman. Damon Hill cruised to victory at Magny-Cours, and moved ahead of me in the championship. Mika Salo scored a rare point in his uncompetitive Tyrrell.

ROUND 10 - 1996 BRITISH GRAND PRIX - Silverstone

PRE-RACE
Jordan have confirmed Giancarlo Fisichella for the 1997 season after a terrific season with Minardi so far. Martin Brundle may not be forced to retire though, as Rubens Barrichello is being linked with a drive with the new for 1997 Stewart team, run by the legendary Jackie Stewart. No driver has yet been confirmed for the MasterCard Lola team. Rumours are that Giovanni Lavaggi and his money could be taking one of the Minardi seats for the rest of the season. Pedro Lamy being the most likely to make way, despite scoring 3 points at Monaco.

QUALIFYING
It felt great, my first home grand prix where I had a realistic shot of winning, although apart from 1991, my luck at Silverstone wasn't exactly great. Although I scored pole position here by about half a second. Maybe it could have been even more, as Badoer blocked me on my last flying lap, although he was on a "flyer" too. Thanks to the fact that it didn't cost me, Luca escapes a penalty. He was only 21st, just ahead of his teammate, so it wouldn't have had any effect. Sauber were easily the fastest out of the midfield runners, with 9th and 10th on the grid.

1. Christopherson 1.27.556
2. Schumacher 1.28.103
3. Hill 1.28.374

RACE
Off the line, Schumacher made a slightly better start than me, but not enough to take the lead away from me. With the inside lane, he had to brake sharper, and he lost momentum. Hill and Hakkinen took advantage, and were duelling for 2nd place. Hakkinen took Hill's position temporarily, but the elder statesman soon took that place back. They were gearing up for a race-long battle. Unfortunately, Martin Brundle and Pedro Diniz were both out on the first lap. Brundle with a clutch failure and Diniz having problems with the electronics. I slowly and steadily built up a gap, so i'd have a bit of leeway, incase I made a mistake. Thankfully though, I didn't, and kept the lead I worked hard on building. There was no overtaking between Hill and Hakkinen, although they dropped Schumacher, as he fell behind by about 10 seconds. Forti's troubles continued, as Montermini's engine died. The team not even knowing whether they would be competing in the next race, as despite Shannon's funding, the team were on the verge of collapsing. Ricardo Rosset and Giancarlo Fisichella came together, and both lost a wheel in a collision. With 7 laps to go, I slowed down as I had built up a 35 second gap, so I knew I could take it easy. On the penultimate lap, going into Copse, Hakkinen passed Hill for 2nd place, although down the Hangar Straight, Hill took the place back, as the Williams was clearly quicker down the straight. In the end, I completed my first Grand Chelem, by leading the entire race from pole and scoring fastest lap. I took the chequered flag, and it never felt so good, top step of the podium, 50 miles from home. The big 4 teams were too reliable, meaning the highest midfield runners were 9th and 10th, both of the Saubers.

1. Christopherson 1hr 29m 54.749s
2. Hill +25.653s
3. Hakkinen +26.791s
4. Schumacher +37.014s
5. Coulthard +42.783s
6. Berger +55.247s

11. Barrichello +1 Lap
12. Salo +1 Lap
