A sad but probably true observation Mario. The BBC have really ruined all that initial positive coverage they got for "bringing F1 back to the beeb". In a way, they should just get out of the deal as quickly as possible really and try and save themselves some face instead of dragging their coverage through the dirt by cutting it down year on year. I don't want it to happen as then I'll have no (legal) way of watching any of the races live but it's starting to get embarrassing the way the whole thing has come off the rails.

He pops up in such silly places;Tour de France on Eurosport, coverage of the Bundesliga on ESPN, the Guardian football podcast. For such an adept sports broadcaster it's bizarre how he hasn't been given a proper prominent permanent position somewhere.

Yeah, for about 5 minutes in a studio before he passes over to the commentary team (which unfortunately includes Sean "most boring voice in the entire world" Kelly). Still under-utilised in a big way.

They would be very good, although Ed Leigh reminds me of Paul Whitehouse's Fast Show Character who does the off roading. I could imagine Graham Bell doing a good track guide in a go-kart, like his course guides on Ski Sunday

I'm sure it must have been posted on this forum already somewhere, but does anybody know which races will be on Sky and which on the BBC this year? I particularly want to know about Australia initially, as it is the first race of the year...

I remember hearing that Sky have got Monaco. BBC have got India if I remember correctly, oh joy!

Yeah the Beeb's first live race is China I think. They don't have Monaco either.

I imagine that, given the news that the number of teams in financial distress appears to be rising, that the news that the viewing figures are declining slightly would be disconcerting. Sponsorship deals are already being squeezed, and if potential sponsors get the impression that they are getting less widespread coverage than they were in the past, then I expect that the teams will face further squeezes to their budgets as sponsor deals are cut back further.

For UK and UK Sky subscribers, Sky will broadcast live the afternoon of the first day of the second Barcelona test, on the 28th of February. In 3D as well, if you're into that sort of thing.
I am realy looking forward to this and I might even book the day off for it.

It's also a pretty interesting move by Sky to televise pre-season testing - I know that the BBC did film a few pieces in Jerez to give their first impressions on the performance of the cars, but this is quite different. It's the best test to pick, though, given that the cars will be running in their Melbourne specification - I wonder if there will be any surprise upgrades in the works this year or not.

So. The cost of a Sky F1 subscription - now part of the Sky Sports package - will rise to £510 for this year, on a minimum 12-month contract.

Never has that Astra 1 dish I bought this time last year looked like so much of a bargain. Bear in mind it had already paid for itself by about August/September last year.

The interesting thing is, the BBC will be showing live coverage of all practice sessions on BBC2 for the races they have live this year, which is a nice improvement on the red button/online option before. Not that it will matter to me as I'll still end up watching them from work online! :lol:

What that says to me though is that whilst the BBC have cut back on their commitment to F1, it's not just slowly going to the wall like perhaps some of us forsaw.

If you're happy with the SKY coverage, can afford it and expected an increase then fair play, you'll have another great season of F1 and probably many more.

If one already has Sky (like ~30% of UK homes) and an HD subscription including either premium Sport OR Movies packages there is NO increase in cost for F1 this year (phew).

I am not defending Sky here, just pointing out that the change is coupled to an introductory offer for HD sports. Their coverage is, IMHO, superb with the exception of Ms. Thompson who made up for her banal questions on other ways

To blame Sky alone for this change is I suspect naive. All major sports are going this waay and all major satellite broadcasters are getting involved. I can see the RTL service going partially or fully soon (and yes I have it, just in case, alongside the Sky package). Cricket and rugby league now have minority followings in the UK compared with the past FTA model. Tennis is going the same way but cycling is increasing its exposure. Football is football, it takes over pubs with the Sky service and seems to be watched by drunken idiots who scream like little girls every time someone stops to tie their bootlaces. But all those sports have seen an increase in revenue from the subscription model.

Look where the money goes in F1; Bernie and his venture capitalists are at the end of a very lucrative gravy train. The one place it is NOT going is into promoting new exciting driving and engineering talent and bringing them into the sport. The greed of the major teams (esp. Ferrari) doesn't help this though I suspect that Bernie facilitates deals behind the scenes with them and the reject canddiates so that there are enough cars to make the races look interesting. F1 is changing and not for the better but it is not because of the broadcasting model. It will become marginalised without new talent building and driving the cars. And that's a shame.

I have a strong feeling that new fans are also in short supply. We have had F1 on subscription here in Estonia for about 4 years now and the FTA component has been downsized every year until it is now on a B spec channel a rerun late in the evening and it is also no longer actually FTA as the channel is on basic cable but not available over the air for free. And it has had its effect - my young relative, who is 13 and in the best age to pick it up has not even heard of it and neither have his friends. When I was his age the race on Sunday used to be a talking point in school on Monday morning.

I don't think so. Despite the German races being money dumps, TV ratings here are still tremendous. Over the season average they only declined a bit (mainly caused by soccer (curse them) and the olympics) and the season finale had the best ratings since the 2007 one.

And we in Hungary have had FTA F1 coverage for several decades now. This year, M1(HD) are planning to air the second FP too for the Australian GP - I strongly believe they want to add the extra coverage to the live (with the sole exception of... United States I believe last year?) quali+race. And we still have analogue terrestrial, but rumours say the switchover will be done by 2014 January anyway.

Good job I got the HD package last year then, though the fact that we will have the F1 channel as part of that 'indefinitely' does not mean forever of course.

Despite the cost, I think I would pay for it if I had to as I would at least watch some of the football and the cricket. But hopefully it won't come to that.

I certainly wouldn't want to go back to the Beeb, although it makes me sad to say that. Suzi Perry was on TV this week desperately trying to convince everyone that she really loves F1. Her feature on the BBC is full of publicocrap, especially the bit where she's asked for a favourite moment. You can almost see the cogs turning : "Got to say Senna to prove that I'm a real fan......can't say something too obvious.......ooh, that bit where Mansell gave him a lift. 'Cos that means I mention Mansell AS WELL!"

Tell me about it. She's going to have to work very hard to convince me she's in it for the long haul and not just the payslip at the end of the month. I don't see why they just can most of the pre and post race coverage and just focus on doing a good job of the actual races.

I actually watched a few of those videos this morning. 1996 Spanish Grand Prix, 2001 Malaysian Grand Prix and 2005 Japanese Grand Prix.

It's about time they did this, though I was also surprised to see the 1994 GP was on when I was idly flicking through the guide.

The Beeb did indeed do it but predictably it became a very half-arsed exercise with Andrew Benson usually getting increasingly more desperate in his explanations for decisions.

I do wonder which coverage we're going to get though - I notice that there's nothing earlier that 1994 so I'm guessing that it will be Eurosport/ITV/Sky races only as I doubt if the Beeb have said yes to raiding their archive. Unless it's new commentary, which would be horrible.

Well, it's original commentary on the 1994 Aussie race. Cut down a bit, yes, but c'est la vie.

It's a British TV channel, and a certain Brit made thier debut. Enough said.

My classic 5 would be:
1986
1991-A bit short, but still some great driving.
1994
1996
2008

I also think 2002 was good, as a certain Aussie scored 2 points on his debut at his home Grand Prix.
