That is not the kind of attitude or professionalism that we at Arrows want to be associated with. Making public and unfounded outbursts about your works team just 3 races into the season isn't how to make and sustain long term relationships in Formula 1. We could easily point out that the BMW engines are massively flawed, but we feel that overt criticism of our partners is not desirable. That is all.

Alfa Romeo would like to remind Arrows that not only are our engines much better than the crap BMW offer, but they are more reliable too. We also embrace all of our teams into the Alfa family, and send engineers to every event you team partake in, whether test or race, rain or shine. That is all.

Alfa Romeo make a tempting offer, and if things don't improve with BMW, we might enter negotiations with you. However, we are also interested in the rumours surrounding Hondas return. That is all :D

Ferrari 1-2 in Jerez, but Eddie Irvine is close. Williams are a bit further off the pace then they would like but still up there and it has been a great session for Villeneuve and Lola. Chevrolet seem to be getting there, dicing with the Minardi team and an off form Prost. It has been another disaster of a session for Gauthier whilst Shinji Nakano becomes the first DNQ of the season.

For those that wanted testing, I will run it after the race, just wanted to get this moving again after focusing on the Tour de France thread.

just an offtopic question: How is it possible to play GPM2 with only computer controlled teams? As far as I know human teams in the game must be between 1 and 4 !

Technically, Shadaza is still playing the game with one human team, but he has set up the cars so that they are unable to complete a qualifying lap, thus not appearing on the result sheet at all.

That is possible, I will shift the balance 100% to getting the new car complete.

Your chief staff's contracts all expire at the end of the year. All of whom are rated 3 stars (out of a possible 5)

Hakkinen out duels Schumacher again for yet enough 1-2 finish separated by less than 2 seconds. Michael Schumacher ran a heavier fuel load and was caught in traffic, when he made his first pitstop he came out only just ahead of the already stopped Irvine and the Benetton driver overtook Michael. Schumacher regained the place at the next leg and that was as far as challenging Ferrari went.

It looked like Irvine would claim 3rd place only for a late race collision with Alain Prost! Montoya then inherited 3rd only he crashed spectacularly with Alex Wurz on the pit straight, this gave a wonderful podium finish for Jaques Villeneuve who managed to come out top in a battle with Verstappen and Collard. Jan Magnussen drove solidly to claim 6th place and 3 points, his team mate Al Unser got a penalty for jumping the start but tire trouble soon took him out anyway.

Alain Prost had a terrible race, yet ends up taking his first points of the season. He was nowhere near Villeneuves pace and didn't seem to spot Irvine lapping him, poor show. Johnny Herbert battled the Frenchman to the line but could only take the final point available for Sauber, Jean Alesi was a long way behind. Craig Lowndes produced his most solid race of the season so far with 10th, the car did not seem to work well here and this was the best result possible realistically. Whilst Fisichella was at least not last, that honour went to Fontana.

Both Gauthier cars went out with steering problems, it is unlikely they would have challenged for points, though Panis was running ahead of the Nissan cars and may have caught Alesi. Whilst it was a day to forget for Minardi, Chevrolet and Arrows, all three crews suffering double DNF.

Image

Mika Hakkinen extends the lead to 4 points, whilst Ferrari are really starting to run away now. Villeneuve has a hat full more points and Collard has overtaken Montoya after a terrible run of results for the Colombian.

The Champions' Council would like to announce its pleasure with the incredible, nearly legendary, performance shown by Jacques Villeneuve in yesterday's race. He made use of his opportunity to score the Champions' team's first podium result, hopefully there are more to come. On a personal note, Alain Prost would like to apologise to Eddie Irvine for the incident on lap 45.

After careful consideration: yes, the Honda Motor Company is ready to give Arrows its full factory support.

Arrows F1 team are glad that Honda are prepared to join forces with us, and I hope that we can conquer F1 together. Arrows intend to break their contract with BMW, citing mutual dislike between the companies, and we hope this partnership with Honda will be a truly great one.

So with immediate effect.

Arrows drop BMW and become a Honda supported team. As the cost of breaking such a contract will be high, Arrows should bare in mind they should probably test less and not hire more staff to cover the cost, that is unless Honda are prepared to either supply engines for free or even better give funding to the team.

There are 2 ways to improve how quickly you work on the car, what percentage of time staff work on designing the new car and how much staff you have.

On with the show. Estoril.

Ferrari once again lock out 1-2 with Eddie Irvine the closest challenger.
There has been an improved performance for Minardi and Lola, both teams are well in the top 10.
The tighter track is playing havock on the heavier Chevrolet teams and the double nature of Spain and Portugal means Arrows have had no time to test their new Honda engines so they sit near the back. Though Jordan once again prop up the grid, disappointed not to be close to their Nissan engine cousins.

Michael Schumacher wins at Estoril after a dramatic final few laps!
Mika Hakkinen should have won this race, after trading places with Schumacher throughout the Finn had a 10 second lead with only 5 laps to go. However Ferrari had under fueled him and the lead disappeared to nothing as the Finn desperately tried to fuel save, 3 laps from the end he had to pit and came out just ahead of the fighting Montoya and Irvine. On cold tires Hakkinen was unable to fend off the Renault powered cars and dropped to 4th.

Montoya and Irvine battled the entire 71 laps, they were on an identical pit strategy however a slow first pitstop meant that Montoya managed to exit the pits ahead of Irvine and managed to hold off the Brit to take 2nd place, his first real result since winning the opening round in Australia.

Despite running as high as 3rd in the early stages, including overtaking Montoya and Irvine on track, Trulli's pace dropped as the race went on and after a titanic struggle found himself behind team mate Kristensen. Both Minardi's were slower towards the end of the race and they had to do a lot of defending to keep the Lola team behind them. Despite a last lap incident from Al Unser, both Lola's manage to claim the final championship points.

The top 10 in qualifying were the top 10 in the race as attrition was very low among the front runners. This meant a lackluster Collard scored 0 points and an epic tire saving drive from Fontana went unrewarded. It really was an anonymous race for Champions, Chevrolet, Gautheir and Sauber whilst Arrows struggled to keep up.
ROTR goes to Shinji Nakano who was a full 4 seconds a lap slower then anyone else and did not see Verstappen lapping him (after only 10/11 laps too!) causing both of them to crash and retire.

Hakkinen only finishing 4th and Schumacher winning means Michael now takes the championship lead by a single point.

Image

Whilst Ferrari continue to dominate the constructors.
Minardi climb above the Champions team and Lola double their points

Image

Please let me know your testing plans, the next round is MonteCarlo.

Though no teams seem to be free. I'd like to look into taking the role of Engine supplier for Peugeot and/or a driver representative for the currently unemployed Coulthard.

Looking forward to being more involved.

Peugeot wrote:Peugeot Look to make F1 return!
Since being dumped by Jordan before the 1997 season. Peugeot has remained out of F1. Though new Chairman of Peugeot Motors, AJ Ideas has spoken recently about re-joining F1.
"I'd be a great pleasure to return to F1. Last time we had a pretty successful season with Jordan. A team we wouldn't say no to working with again"

Peugeot announced a couple of targets:
+ Return to F1 as an Engine supplier and develop our engine ASAP.
+ Encourage the development of young French drivers.
+ Look to have Peugeot powered teams beat Renault teams within 2 seasons.

Peugeot realistically will probably have to wait till at least 1999 to gain a supplier. Though would be open to supplying any team with engines should they be unhappy with their current supplier.

Looking to increase engine power by the 1999 season. A customer this season would supply crucial upgrade data.

Driver Agent wrote:Coulthard announces Agent

David Coulthard currently without a drive in F1 has recruited a new agent. In hopes to return to the sport.

"I'm as driven as ever to return to Formula 1. I hope my new management team will argue my case for drive better than the last lot"

Already his new Agent and current big boss at Peugeot has signed Coulthard onto the Peugeot Driver program. Allowing him to test with any Peugeot powered team. Unfortunately that is zero teams so far.

"We aren't closing the door on any team right now. Though would like to open discussions with Williams. Who we feel have a better car than Collard and Montoya are showing. Both being inexperienced and prone to mistakes. The steady hand of Coulthard might make a better Championship charger."

Peugeot are looking to supply a few teams. Though would like to set it's roots and offer full factory support to the right team. This support would include some financial backing. Though with this we would like input into the test driver line-up. Engines will be free to this works team.

Coulthard is up for grabs as both part of a potential engine deal and individually. You don't need to be Peugeot powered to have him as a driver.

Silverstone
Nissan and Jordan

1.David Coulthard 1:31:048
2.Giancarlo Fisichella 1:31:175
3.Noberto Fontana 1:32:412
4.Pedro de la Rosa 1:33:932
5.Craig Lowndes 1:34:660
6.Shinji Nakano 1:34:764

Coulthard on his first run matched Fontana and then after that went much faster, even finding some new pace in the car.
Fontana believes car improvements are heading in the right direction and found 0.3 to 0.5 seconds of pace.
Lowndes did not improve his driving, but at least was consistent.

Giancarlo Fisichella set his best time on his first run then dropped half a second a lap, however he is happy in the car and claims to have found some improvements
Pedro de la Rosa enjoyed his first run out in the car quickly outpacing Shinji Nakano, he found improvements everytime he sat in the car.
Shinji Nakano worked his times down a little bit and found a couple of improvements himself, a good test for Jordan all round.

Nurburgring Testing
Sauber

1. Jean Alesi 1:24:631
2. Mika Salo 1:24:675
3. Johnny Herbert 1:24:760

Jean Alesi was happier in the car than Herbert and found some small improvements, overall not much gained in the times.
Mika Salo still feels tired after a race distance, however his morale did improve as he feels the team is working better.

JeremyMcClean wrote:Well, I'd like to focus on 20% of my staff (how many do I have currently?) on the development of the 1999 car.

Currently the focus is set to 97% on the new car and even at 100% it won't be finished!

You have 6 excellent designers (level 5 of 5)
7 excellent engineers
and 8 excellent mechanics.
Lola is very tiny and the head of departments are all fairly poor. So to be running faster than Gauthier is rather impressive!

Well, given that the car was rubbish to start with and we've already stopped development, that's not too surprising. By the way, did I already tell you to give all the heads of department the sack at the end of the year? And if so, who can I hire to replace them?

I did, maybe you missed the message but I posted the list of department heads already, but I will simply post it again.

Ok here are the current heads of departments, none of them have been confirmed for next season, if you wish to hire them do so as soon as possible as around mid season the AI will start signing department heads.

So, signing personnel, eh? I think I will retain my chief designer and engineer. However, on the mechanic front, we will go for Operation Barbarossa: try to hire Michael Negline at any cost. :o

When we are talking about testing, the Champions' team would like to stay at wherever the next race is for the days after the race, trying to improve Villeneuve's and Kanaan's driving skills and having Prost find some performance in our car. Maybe test a few pit stops if we have the time for that.
