Since I want to get Long Beach up and running this weekend, I'll need confirmation replacements for Case at Beirao, and Pellerin at Simpson by Friday. Otherwise, we may just see the return of my favourite party trick and start pulling names out of a hat.

2016 F2RWRS Southwest Airlines United States Grand Prix

Pre-Qualifying
If Andrej Kremnicky was on thin ice before this weekend, it's safe to say his career can now be measured in days after he single-handedly ended the IBR works team's US Grand Prix before it really began, despite the sister car of Dan Greenlaw sitting on Pre-Q pole position for most of the session. Aeroracing came perilously close to a similar fate, as Wouter Lamberigts spent the first 13 minutes of the session being fast asleep, before a last-gasp flyer put him to the top of the timesheets, and Aeroracing into Pre-Qualifying, where they will be joined by the two Red Bull cars of Sebastien Prost and Cave Johnson.

Qualifying

The ultra-low grip nature of the Long Beach course played havoc with the teams and drivers, as they all scrambled to try and get three qualifying runs in over the course of the session. While nobody encountered traffic and the stewards had a quiet day, there were still enough surprises to keep everyone on their toes. Wouter Lamberigts was one who struggled, as he was only a dismal P7, his worst qualifying performance in years, while the second Aeroracing car of Marcel Ageymang-Badu was stranded down in P19, with both Carter Simpson and Diego Alvarez Torrente also outside the top 10. In their place, Alberto Cara stormed his way to pole position, with 2014 champion Mitchell Macklin joining him on the front row. Behind them, Jordan Davies will start from 3rd alongside last year's runner-up Bastiaan van Nieuwenhuijzen. A final note goes to Simpson's latest recruit Matthias Valsattis, as in his first race since Road America last year, he hauled the #9 car to a rather fitting 9th on the grid for Saturday's race.

2016 F2RWRS Southwest Airlines United States Grand Prix
Race

Positives

Matthias Valsattis - The career of the young Latvian was in limbo at the beginning of this season. However, with Luc Pellerin's ignominious sacking, Dave Simpson threw the younger brother of Masta a lifeline with a race-by-race deal with the team. Matthias responded with easily THE start of the year, to go from 9th to 3rd by the end of the first lap. From there, he was guaranteed at least a top 5 spot with the rather unorthodox three-stop strategy several teams and drivers were employing this weekend, but lady luck had other ideas. As Bastiaan van Nieuwenhuijzen and Mitchell Macklin both blew up from the lead, and Alberto Cara and Marko Jantscher decided taking each other out was a good idea, it was down to Matthias to take a popular debut victory at Long Beach, which he quickly dedicated to his long-time manager and friend Mr Alexander, who was seen wandering the paddock at Montreal.

Melrose Racing Team - It's taken them almost a year and a half, but MRT have finally found some of the form that took them to both titles in 2014, with Gianluigi Pazzini recording his second podium in a row to catapult himself into championship contention. The Italian was catching Jordan Davies at the rate of knots in the closing stages, and when the Brit had a tyre let go in with a few laps to go, it was down to him to claim 2nd place behind Valsattis. Jason Hamilton meanwhile had easily the best run of his F2RWRS return so far, as he managed to make a one-stop strategy work against the horde of three-stoppers. Despite being under enormous pressure on fading tyres, the young Australian held on to his first trip to the dais this year, albeit over half a minute behind Valsattis and Pazzini.

Jordan Davies - If there ever was someone with a hard luck story to tell at Long Beach, it was Aston Martin's Jordan Davies. After his second blinding qualifying session in a row, the Brit was keeping pace with the leaders all race, and was there to pick up the pieces when some of the top runners started capitulating. Eventually, he found himself in second with Pazzini closing in, but ever so slowly creeping up to Valsattis in the lead. While the win was out of the question, second was there for the taking until a puncture denied him and the team a much-needed result.

Cave Johnson - As a San Diego resident, Cave Johnson would have been thoroughly disappointed with starting last on the grid in his home event at Long Beach. However, like a thief in the night, the American managed to sneak through the field, as he took advantage of the early jostling to find his way into the top 10 on a two stop strategy. From there, he took full advantage of the bottleneck behind the one-stopping Hamilton, put in some quick laps and came out well inside the points after the final stops. As the field continued to be compressed behind Hamilton, Johnson used his bank of experience from the RoLFS to nab fifth place from Marcel Ageymang-Badu in the closing stages to score a valuable four points for the Red Bull team, as they aim to get themselves out of pre-qualifying before the end of the year.

Negatives

Alberto Cara/Marko Jantscher - By all rights, these two should have been fighting it out for the win ahead of Valsattis, but all that went to hell the minute Cara came out of the pits from his first pit stop. The Tropican defended heavily into the braking zone for turn one, with Jantscher trying to make a move that was questionable at best. The end result was merely inevitable, as Cara was shoved into the nearest barrier while Jantscher was now pointing the wrong way on the track, before he proceeded to troll around the back of the field and eventually retire with a puncture. The stewards decided in the end it was a racing incident with both drivers equally to blame, but the damage had already been done for both of them in a collision that could have massive implications for both in the championship.

Sebastian Prost - In contrast to teammate Cave Johnson, the Frenchman made almost no impression on the field for the entire duration of the race, and at no point even looked like scoring points. By the end of the race, he was battling with the equally apathetic Carter Simpson in the GRM for PNowhere, which he lost on his way to 13th and last on the road.

Wouter Lamberigts - Question: You've been moved over from the Alitalia B-1 Team to the Alitalia B-2 Team with the task of getting them out of pre-qualifying. What should you do? Well, according to Wouter Lamberigts, the answer was to jeopardise their chances all weekend, as he put in a grand total of one half-decent flying lap over the course of two sessions, before falling back like a rock earlier in the race. This was before he decided that punting teammate Badu off the road was a good idea, earning himself a penalty for the incident, and the ire of the team as he single-handedly cost Badu the chance to leapfrog the one-stopping Hamilton later on. To cap off the misery of the Belgian driver, the penalty was enough to tip him over the 100 penalty point threshold, which means he will not be around for the German Grand Prix at the Norisring.

Jack Christopherson Jr - It's amazing to think that the son of a former world champion can go seven races into the F2RWRS and still not score a single point, even though he's proven to be capable enough in race trim at least, but it all looked like it was going to change for young Jack, as he had put in a mature drive on the three-stopper up until the closing stages. He had made the best use of clean air early on to thrust himself into the points by the midpoint of the race, and remained there for much of the afternoon right in the thick of the Hamilton express and on track for some minor points. Until he decided understeering off the road was a better idea, dropping him all the way down to 10th and have his pointless run continue.

Carter Simpson - The now former championship leader came into Long Beach with all the form in the world, and many pundits praising him for his maturity in a season where consistency is key. After a so-so qualifying, it all came crashing down when he got punted off the road by Martin van der Maeyede, which earned the Dutchman a trip to the stewards' office. From there it was all downhill, as Simpson proceeded to throw it off the road again, before insipid driving relegated him to a lowly 12th place finish, cost him the lead in the championship, and earned him a Reject of the Race award.

Wouter Lamberigts has been given a one race ban, as he has gone over the 100 point threshold after incidents at Penrith, Istanbul and Long Beach. Aeroracing are to nominate a replacement for the German Grand Prix. Meanwhile, Alessandro Marchesi has completed his two race ban, and is free to return to active competition.

Bit of housekeeping before Germany this weekend:

1. Unless stated otherwise, Alessandro Lucarelli will make his F2 debut at Aeroracing alongside Marcel Ageymang-Badu
2. After talks with Beirao management, Kazakh driver Nikov Time will also make his debut in place of Joao Antonio Soares for two races. Having specalised in time trials and hill climbs in the former Eastern Bloc, Time is deemed to be a qualifying specialist up there with the best of them. However, his race pace is questionable at best. After his two race stint at Beirao, he will take up his post as the official RWRS 'go to' guy for one-off replacements alongside Justin Case, with RRR's approval.
3. As expected, Alessandro Marchesi will make his return in Germany. However, it's advised that Aston Martin have a replacement on standby, as he is sitting on thin ice right now.

Akira Yamamura is definately making his F2RWRS debut at the next race for Aeroracing.

A: Need to get out of the doldrums of Pre-Qualifying.

I also go ahead and announce very shamelessly that Nikov Time will spend, erm, some time at Beirão. He will replace João Antonio Soares for two races.

2016 F2RWRS Lufthansa German Grand Prix

Pre-Qualifying

An enormous accident during F3 practice had ended up moving several barriers on the approach to turn 1, and delayed the start of F2 pre-qualifying by nearly 30 minutes as repair crews set about sorting the mess out. Once the session got underway, it was the two Beiraos of Nikov Time and Laurent Seron who went straight to the top of the timesheets, a position they would never relinquish for the rest of the session. Dan Greenlaw secured 3rd early on, but it looked for a while that Alitalia would miss out for the second weekend running until Justin Case's third lap put the team back in the game. Behind them, neither Aeroracing car showed any of their practice form with Marcel Ageymang-Badu and Japanese rookie Akira Yamamura slumping to 10th and 6th respectively.

Qualifying

The 2.3 kilometer Norisring circuit has always thrown up exciting RWRS weekends, and this year was no exception as the 22 remaining F2RWRS set about battling for pole position for Saturday's 87 lap race. Diego Alvarez Torrente took an early pole for Plus One, with Nikov Time coming within half a tenth of the Spaniard's time on his second run. Then, incredibly, Justin Case decided to make his stand, and stole pole from Torrente by just two thousandths of a second, which he would never lose as he took his first career pole in the F2RWRS. Behind Torrente and Time, Gregor Pascal absolutely thumped teammate Jean-Vincent Albertini on his way to 4th, ahead of Alberto Cara and Gianluigi Pazzini. Finally, a word of consolation to poor Matthias Valsattis, as Long Beach's race winner struggled with an evil-handling car on his way to an abysmal 21st on the grid.

Positives

Diego Alvarez Torrente - The way Torrente got mugged by the leaders early on was rather worrying for the Plus One team, as having already lost teammate Martin Rietacher to a big first lap accident, they were relying on the Spaniard to bring home another big result. Once the first stops for the two stoppers were out of the way though, Torrente was vaulted back into the lead on what turned out to be the superior one-stop strategy. From there, he simply did the bare minimum needed to win the race, his first in the F2RWRS, and solidify his lead in the drivers' championship.

Scuderia Alitalia - The soon to be former works Lancia squad came back from the dead with stirring performances from Dan Greenlaw and supersub Justin Case. Driving for his third team this season, Case led away with confidence during the first stint, eventually building a two second gap before his first pit stop. His lack of regular seat time showed however, as he eventually fell away to 4th behind Greenlaw and Gianluigi Pazzini, which was still a solid result for the Canadian nonetheless. Greenlaw meanwhile was able to hang on with the leaders all afternoon, before nabbing second place from Pazzini in the closing stages after a moment of sheer brain fade from Carter Simpson to put his faltering title challenge somewhat back on track.

Gianluigi Pazzini - The Italian is in the form of his life right now after the Mad Uncle put the fire under both him and teammate Jason Hamilton a few races ago. After scoring two seconds in a row, Pazzini added another podium for 3rd place as he vaulted himself right into title contention around the high-speed Norisring circuit. After passing Case after the half-distance mark, Pazzini was probably the only driver who had both the pace and track position to challenge Torrente for the win. While it was debatable whether the Italian would have caught him, Simpson ended all discussion on the question by putting the MRT driver in the wall while being lapped, which allowed Greenlaw ahead and sealed the deal for Torrente.

Marko Jantscher - After making his F1RWRS debut for Kamaha at Road America a few weeks ago, the Austrian arrived in Germany with renewed confidence and racecraft we hadn't seen from him in ages. After qualifying well down the order, Jantscher mowed his way through the field in the early going to enter the points by the first pitstop sequence. From there, he was able to stay within sight of the chasing trio of Greenlaw, Pazzini and Case to score a solid 5th place by race end.

Negatives

Nikov Time - Everyone knew that the Kazakh driver's race pace would be questionable at best. However, nobody expected him to be given an effective suspended ban after just 10 laps of racing after two boneheaded collisions with Andrej Kremnicky and Yuka Katayama, the second of which put him out of the race after several barrel-rolls. While he'll have a second weekend at Zandvoort to prove himself, the odds don't look particularly great for Beirao's latest recruit

Alessandro Marchesi - The stewards made it abundantly clear to the Italian that he was on thin ice after his charades in Austria, but it seemed to have escaped him the minute the lights turned off, as he spent most of the afternoon being a nuisance as a mobile chicane. A late engine failure eventually put him out of the race, but not before deciding coasting off the racing line down the pit straight, being involved in a collision with Bastiaan van Nieuwenhuijzen and parking in the middle of the track was a good idea. From there, the stewards showed no hesitation in keeping to their word, benching the Italian for the rest of the season.

Gregor Pascal - While qualifying in 4th was a solid effort, the needless collision with Alberto Cara put after a vicious first lap chop at the penultimate corner put both of them to the rear of the field, and earned Pascal the ire of the stewards. From there, the Swiss driver was largely anonymous before a suspension failure ended his afternoon, and put his now faltering career in further scrutiny.

Matthias Valsattis - After a dream run at Long Beach, the Latvian came crashing back down to earth with a thud as he found himself an abysmal 21st on the grid heading into the race. From there, he combined insipid driving with overly-aggressive defending which made him a liability to the midfield, as proven by two collisions with Yuka Katayama and Jordan Davies which he ended up being booked for by the stewards. By the time he finally got his head back together on track, the transmission on his car had given up and put a merciful early end to his race.

GRM Young Lions - If there ever was a college for falling from grace, GRM would have graduated with honours given the recent run they've had with both Daniel Melville and Carter Simpson. Here, the misery hit an all time low as it became clear from the early going that neither car was going to be competitive, with Melville making sure of that with an early collision with Davies removing both drivers from points contention, and triggering Melville's suspended ban from race 2. Simpson meanwhile was able to combat it somewhat on a one-stop strategy, but then he succumbed to the curse of over-driving, as two collisions with the two MRT drivers of Jason Hamilton and Pazzini proved, the latter of which particularly irritated the stewards as Simpson was a lap down by that point. For going from early runaway title leaders to this shambolic effort, the team as a whole ended up walking away with Reject of the Race for Germany.

As a result of incidents from Austria and Germany, Alessandro Marchesi has been excluded from competing in any further F2RWRS events for the rest of the season. In addition, his F1RWRS Reject License has also been suspended until December 31st, 2016. Additionaly, as a result of incidents from Oran Park and Germany, Daniel Melville has been handed a one race ban, to be served at the Dutch Grand Prix. GRM are to nominate a replacement by next weekend, or the Commission will see fit to find someone else for the job. Meanwhile, as a result of incidents from Austria and Germany, Gregor Pascal has been handed a one race ban, also to be served at the Dutch Grand Prix. Like GRM, Gillet are to nominate a replacement or the Commission will appoint one for them. Finally, Wouter Lamberigts has completed his race ban, and is free to return to active competition with Aeroracing from the Dutch Grand Prix onwards.

Gillet-Ecurie Nationale Belge have confirmed that Pascal will be replaced by Alessandro Lucarelli for the next race. Should Gregor pull off such stunts again, he will be sacked.

GRM have until tomorrow night to nominate a replacement for Melville. Otherwise, I'll nominate one for them

2016 F2RWRS TNT Dutch Grand Prix

Pre-Qualifying

With wet weather setting in on Zandvoort for virtually the entire weekend, everyone knew that pre-qualifying was going to be an absolute lottery. And a lottery it was as some big names searched in vain for grip on the ultra-wet track, while other names like Eric Swerts shone, as the Belgian went straight to Pre-Q pole on his first run which he would never relinquish. It wasn't enough to get Dofasco into the game however, as Judd McAllister in the second car was miles off the pace of his teammate. The Lancia cars in particular were struggling massively to put power down on the track, with Marcel Ageymang-Badu the only one of the quartet looking remotely competitive. This left Jones Racing and Beirao to pick up the spoils, as both teams made it into the main game and made the lives of Gillet and Fusion much, much easier as they aim to avoid falling into pre-qualifying for the next three races.

Qualifying

Between the Thursday afternoon pre-qualifying session and the unusually late Saturday morning qualifying, the remaining 11 teams had plenty of time to try and figure out a decent wet weather setup for the rest of the weekend. While Friday had gradually dried out in time for the first F1RWRS qualifying session, more rain overnight had left the track roughly where it was on Friday morning when the F2RWRS cars last ran. Nikov Time immediately put his considerable time trail and hillclimb experience to good use to top the timesheets with the fastest lap anyone had seen up to that point into the weekend, which eventually proved good enough for pole as nobody was able to get close to his mark. Diego Alvarez Torrente and Jordan Davies were his closest challengers, with their laptimes from their first runs being enough to secure them second and third on the grid as GRM super-sub Dean Melville threw it off the road in the early going. Having made it as far as the gravel trap, GRM deliberately held Melville's second run as long as they could as they checked over the car, which helped set up one of the most controversial incidents in RWRS history.

As Melville came steaming into turn 1 on his second hot lap with just seconds left on the clock, the Australian found himself nearly shoved off the road by Marko Jantscher, who had just left pit lane and was trundling down the inside of turn 1 for reasons nobody could figure out. Having deemed there was absolutely no reason for Jantscher to be leaving the pit lane with less than 15 seconds on the clock and baulking Melville like he did, the stewards came down hard on Jantscher and the Falik Arrows team, with the Austrian being docked 40 penalty points for the incident and his team losing all teams' points they would have otherwise scored this weekend. The penalty put a real damper on the team's otherwise fine performance, as Yuka Katayama was a career-best 4th on the grid with Jantscher right behind her. Meanwhile, Gilles Massinion gave his bosses something to smile about with 6th on the grid, his best performance since Oran Park where he was in contention for the win for most of the event.
