I'm aware that this is a double post - but it occurs to me as I'm setting up for Daytona 500 qualifying that I haven't told anyone outside of the chat how this is going to work. In a word, badly.
Joking, really, it's not that bad. Just... complicated. You see, the easy part is the top 38 drivers in qualifying all qualify on the times they set in qualifying. After that, we use provisionals to figure out the other 5 starters. Who gets provisionals? That's the tricky part.
You can try and figure it out for yourself if you want, but trust me when I say I have a good handle on it. After spending a couple days working it out... essentially, though, I'll keep track of your provisionals
on the spreadsheet as you earn them. I'll also keep track of Owner Points on the spreadsheet, once the season starts, as this will determine which teams enter based on provisionals.
You may notice on the spreadsheet for Provisionals, that the car number in row 19 is blank. This is because that was the #40 team, but Pasta has now shut that team down. As such it is free to be sold off (or not) as Pasta wishes. I would suggest that it's done before qualifying for the Daytona 500, so let me know, Pasta, if you plan to do anything with it.
As for the Daytona 500 - well that's an entirely different manner. First, qualifying is run as normal. After this, the first row of the grid is set. Then, the twin duels are run - one with all the drivers qualifying in odd-numbered positions, the other with evens. These races set the grid for the first 15 rows (Except row 1 of course). After this, the next 8 positions go to the fastest drivers in qualifying that did not already make the field. After that, we use provisionals as outlined above.
Still with me? I applaud your persistence, it took me like 3 or 4 re-reads just so I can understand what I'm saying here, and I've been trying to understand the qualifying rules for a couple days now. The good news is that I'm scrapping this system as NASCAR did in real life for the 2005 season. I will announce a new system (which may be altered depending on team input) after race 6.
