I'm away for one freaking day and WTF is this? Glad it got somewhat sorted out though, although I'm still curious on what was pasta_maldonado's post, but I trust it was for in the best interests of the whole forum to erase it.

I'm also somewhat irritated on the fact that Alonso's pit radio is now in Italian, but on the other hand I've never found the whole feature really useful ever since it was first introduced some years ago (wasn't it in the mid-2000s or something?). I mean, all of the really useful stuff, like strategy changes are usually encrypted in some way, and anything else is just useless "push push push", "you're doing a great job" or "YEEEE I WON THE RACE THANKS A LOT GUYS!".

I have a ton of pointed opinions as well, but I keep them to myself as many of them are very emotion-driven, I don't want to ruin the forum's good-will spirit and also because I think that internet arguments are the most useless arguments on this planet.

If I can try and keep the discussion civil, I'm not too bothered about the radio messages being in any language other than English. At the end of the day, if the team feel it's easier to discuss race strategy in Italian/French/Japanese etc, let them do it. They're not releasing their radio messages only in English so Dave Smith in London can hear what's going on, they're doing it for themselves.

F1 is a multi-diverse sport, with someone from damn near every country involved with F1 in some way. Not everyone wants/wishes to speak English.

Period.

Precisely. Actually, with computer game history being one of my specialist subjects, I played E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial just to say that I've played it, and it was truly dismal, but frankly, given the six-week programming schedule and the fact that Howard Scott Warshaw had only 128 bytes of RAM and MOS 6507 assembly language at his disposal, I feel that the game is surprisingly polished. At least you can complete it, which is more than you can say for some other published games. Still bathplugging rubbish, though.

It's also insane to think that the Atari 2600, despite setting off the video game crash of 1983, managed to persist beyond it - right up to the 1990s, where consoles literally had hundreds of times the memory and far more sophisticated processors than the 2600.

Regarding the whole engine mapping debacle, I'm not really happy about it as it's yet another example on just how strict the current rules are when the sport should be about innovation and inventing something new. But how long do the teams want to keep researching for something new if there's a high risk it gets banned next season or even in the next race. And this time it wasn't even a new part, but a part of the car setup for crying out loud!

Yes, the different engine mapping might have given them an advantage and even could've been used to create illegal effects like traction control and directing exhaust gases to the diffusor. And it helped Vettel who isn't among my favorites, like I said before in another topic. But the way I see it, if the FIA keeps a strict line like this, they could very well soon start using customer or even same-spec cars.

It does seem to fit into something of a grey area in the regulations, but at least there seem to be grounds for Red Bull to at least partially defend themselves - the latest row that is emerging, however, brings Red Bull's methodology into question again.

What seems to have sparked this off is an article in Auto Motor Und Sport, published recently, stating that the FIA had ordered Red Bull to make an immediate change to the design of their front suspension (AMuS suggests it was related to the third spring system). It appears that Red Bull had developed a method that allowed them to adjust the front suspension setting, and potentially the front ride height, manually (i.e. by hand) - a move that is in direct contravention to the Sporting Regulations, where Article 34.5 states unambiguously that:
"In order that the scrutineers may be completely satisfied that no alterations have been made to the suspension systems or aerodynamic configuration of the car (with the exception of the front wing) whilst in post qualifying parc ferme, it must be clear from physical inspection that changes cannot be made without the use of tools."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/19032217

In other words, the requirement to use tools is in order to prevent a mechanic from cheating the parc ferme regulations and secretly raising the ride height between qualifying and the race in order to gain a performance advantage. As things stand, the FIA does not have any proof that this system has been used to surreptitiously adjust the front ride height in parc ferme - for now, they have been relatively lenient and apparently said to Red Bull "we'll let your results stand, but don't turn up with this device again", according to AMuS.

With the news breaking in Hungary, Horner has been on the defensive for the second week running - his comments don't outright deny that such a system existed; if anything, they seem to confirm that such a device existed. In a carefully worded statement, Horner has denied that the team were involved in breaking the parc ferme regulations:
"It was something that could either be changed by hand or by tool, but the FIA said they preferred it was a tool that was used," Horner told AUTOSPORT.

"We never changed the ride height in parc ferme or anything like that. It really is a non-issue."

When asked why, if the regulations state that tools must be used, the team had a system that allowed settings to be changed manually, Horner said: "There are a lot of parts that are changed manually on the car, but a tool is used. The suspension has never been changed in parc ferme. Never.

"Basically what was on the car on Canada has been on the car at other races as well, but at no point has it been adjusted in parc ferme. It is question of whether you do it with a tool or manually, and it is done with a tool."

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/101572

Interesting that Horner has chosen to say that the FIA preferred the team to use a tool when the regulations seem to pretty unambiguously make it compulsory for tools to be used. Either way, I suspect that we might be seeing a few more "interesting" conversations between Kravitz and Horner - he was already irritable enough in Germany over the engine mapping debacle, and this seems likely to go the same way.

Just posting here to complain about all the new off-topic threads being created on the EVdP section. Don't get me wrong, it has been one of
my most frequented areas of the forums after the Stoddard one, due to the MotoGP, Nascar and the like discussions, but I think enough is
enough now. What with the debate over the Helmut-Marko-Hate-Gate thread which seems to have driven Coops away again (unless he's just
on holiday), we now seem to have threads which will just descend into "Hey, look how cool I am - I listen to Orbital on 12" vinyl and watch
cult-1980s TV, whilst cheering for some 2nd divison team and hate Manchester United or City, whilst playing obscure Japanese-import-only
games on my non-mainstream games console" ....

OK, I don't mind threads like those existing, but needless to say I won't be participating. It used to be I'd log-in, see there were new posts in
the EVdP forum, and click in hoping for some news on MotoGP or something from Cynon about Nascar, now it's just some rubbish tweenie
discussion that I don't care about. I think perhaps another new forum should exist to shift this stuff into, so we've got non-F1 motorsport
discussion in the EVdP forum and non-motorsport off-topic stuff in the new one.

That's my rant for the day. Perhaps I'm just a grumpy old sod - do all the new threads annoy anyone else?
