madmark1974 wrote:Just posting here to complain about all the new off-topic threads being created on the EVdP section. Don't get me wrong, it has been one of my most frequented areas of the forums after the Stoddard one, due to the MotoGP, Nascar and the like discussions, but I think enough is enough now. What with the debate over the Helmut-Marko-Hate-Gate thread which seems to have driven Coops away again (unless he's just on holiday), we now seem to have threads which will just descend into "Hey, look how cool I am - I listen to Orbital on 12" vinyl and watch cult-1980s TV, whilst cheering for some 2nd divison team and hate Manchester United or City, whilst playing obscure Japanese-import-only games on my non-mainstream games console" ....
OK, I don't mind threads like those existing, but needless to say I won't be participating. It used to be I'd log-in, see there were new posts in the EVdP forum, and click in hoping for some news on MotoGP or something from Cynon about Nascar, now it's just some rubbish tweenie discussion that I don't care about. I think perhaps another new forum should exist to shift this stuff into, so we've got non-F1 motorsport discussion in the EVdP forum and non-motorsport off-topic stuff in the new one.
That's my rant for the day. Perhaps I'm just a grumpy old sod - do all the new threads annoy anyone else?
Well how else are we supposed to kill the next three weeks?
Especially when all the major virtual categories with the exception of Pastor's and Tommy's alternative reality seasons along with Tristan's GP2 championship are on hiatus as well?

I guess we could mess with everyone's heads by posting Formula 1-related stuff in the Ali Dia Football thread
At the end of the day, not everyone on here is a die-hard f1 fan. And a majority of the regular members are between 14-30 so computer games, watching loads of films, chasing skirt and football is part of their (and my) life right now. You can't really change that, so you can't stop members talking about it.
What I am pleased about is another F1 forum (which I havent been on since I found this place) had a 'drunken nights thread'. Every post was about how pissed they got over the weekend, having fights, snogging girls and generally being twats. If a thread like that popped up here, I'm off for good.

I personally don't have a problem with the sports threads, because at the end of the day, it's obvious that we're all sports fans. I have more of a problem with stuff like the music/films/other general stuff that can literally be discussed anywhere. There are plenty of outlets on the internet today if people feel the need to discuss the pro's and con's of the latest Rush album or whatever, and the same goes for films. If it's allowed to continue unchecked then you'll end up with a situation where the majority of discussion on the forum as a whole will be completely unrelated to F1 at all, and that would be sad and probably put off a lot of members.

Which is why we need the off-topic forum...would act like an imaginary wall, people who don't want to see it won't have to, they just ignore that one section and the rest is all Formula One.

But that's not the point of the forum is it? We're already stretching the boundaries by having threads for other sports, why should there be an entire forum sub-section devoted to off-topic rubbish? If people want to talk about stuff like that, go to Facebook, Twitter, other forums, chatrooms, whatever. I know for a fact most of us use at least one of those mediums, and most of us are already connected. I really can't see the point in having such a forum here except for those members sad enough to want to boost their post count by spouting rubbish no-one's really interested in. The fact you use the term 'imaginary wall' says it all really doesn't it? It would effectively be not part of F1 Rejects, so why should it be here in the first place?

Isn't that sort of bluntly ignoring human nature? Is there something wrong with wanting to talk about other things once in a while? Not really sure I want to be part of a place where the rules are "YOU CAN ONLY TALK ABOUT X AND Y AND NOTHING ELSE IS ALLOWED". That sucks. It's up for each individual to decide whether a post is worthwhile or not. I did not start the JV Music thread to juice my post count. if I wanted to do that I'd have gone for Word Association Part IV. Instead, I actually learned something.
My point is, people are not one dimensional. Asking them to stick to one subject and one subject only is counter-productive. If someone ever tells me I cannot mention Inter Milan anywhere on this website ever again I will walk out right now and never come back.
This is just nitpicking...forums are supposed to be open, if you start telling us what we can and can't talk about we might as well paint the forum red and censor people left right and centre.

But the forum has existed for three years and done fine without it, and only in the last few months has there been any movement towards non-F1 related sports, and this past week or so has seen the appearance of multiple threads that have no relation to any sport whatsoever. Why should there be such changes implemented now? It's not like we've had a huge influx of members recently.
Ultimately as an ordinary member I'm just speaking my mind here, and making it known that an off-topic sub-forum or whatever isn't the universally agreed solution that some think it is. I've made my point quite clear so as far as I'm concerned, I've nothing else to add to the debate at the present time.

Well I'd like to counter with the logical point that, as said threads were mostly created by different members rather than the same person spamming EVDP with off-topic topics, it suggests this whole thing is a non-issue. For example, the Ali Dia thread, most football forums are filled with idiots, I haven't found this to be the case here at all. If you aren't interested in the thread just don't open it...much like I don''t go anywhere near the Wrestling thread, but, I don't have any problem with it being there....no-one is forcing you to read it...

Exactly. The 'Mark Topics Read' button on the top-right of each sub-forum is there for a reason.

And making makeshift hats whilst sober is plain weird. It only makes sense after consuming copious amounts of alcoholic nourishment.
