There is another related reason for tarmac being preferred over gravel these days, and that is the fact that it is easier for the marshals to remove a stranded vehicle from a tarmac run off area compared to gravel (it is easier to move a recovery vehicle into position, or, alternatively, to push a car out of the way if you have a hard surface rather than a loose one like gravel).

Drivers still get a second car if they can get the car and shredded tires back to the pits. Gravel worked frine for the 20+ years or so it was the most popular merhod of slowing cars down so why did people feel a need to change it? Gravel has never been the sole cause of a fatal accident.
No, but it contributed to Schumacher's broken leg in 1999, because his car skipped over the gravel. That's what modern Formula 1 cars do with gravel runoffs. Tarmac is much more efficient at slowing a car down, well, except in the wet.
Schumacher's crash was due to a brake failure. Sure, abrasive tarmac would have been better, but regular tarmac in that case wouldn't slow the car down at all. Besides, with the cars being safer than ever, I think the chances of anyone having the same crash with injuries as heavy as Michael's are pretty low.

In corners like Pouhon or Stowe etc. where a big accident could be caused by the gravel, I do see the purpose of asphalt safety areas. However it's waaay over-used, see the likes of Spa where Hamilton made a mistake in Rivage '10 and got stuck there in the gravel....guess what, come 2011, there was asphalt there so the drivers don't accidentally have any chance of retiring because of their own mistake

Hello guys, I'm sorry I disappeared for a while. I had to study for a few tests and then my computer stopped working all together. I reinstalled Windows very quickly to continue studying ASAP, but I never configured anything for design. So yesterday I reinstalled Windows yet again and here I bring you a new design to end 2012.
I must really thank you all for the feedback I've had in this forum, specially Rob Lomas' and giraud's who have kindly pointed out major faults with my tracks and praised the last ones.
![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)
I took on Interlagos. I saw a few attempts here that said nothing. Main problems were that Interlagos was originally a very long track folded 40 times on itself. The 1989 redesign for the 1990 season cut many sectors and added many challenging corners like the new S do Senna, the new Ferradura and the new, much tighter Juncao corner. The proposals here centered themselves in using as much of the old track as possible ignoring that many great corners would be lost in the process. That is why I tried to stick to the new layout, just lengthening it wherever I felt a slight extension was needed. I increased the speed through some corners to allow higher speed at the end of some straight runs (e.g., the S do Senna is much faster on the exit, the Ferradura-Laranjinha complex is much faster, removing the need to brake through it). Also, the banking through Ferradura-Laranjinha is intended to be slightly higher, thus providing higher cornering speed.
Both me and another racing driver friend would like to have the corner after the second straight as a Daytona-like banked corner, but I know that is not very F1ish these days. The Monza Oval, the Karousel, or the final corner at Indianapolis days are over... That is why I used a Tilke-style triple-apex corner. However, due to perspective, both that complex and the following Hockenheimring-style hairpin+parabolika look disgusting. I promise that in the plans they look much, much better.
By the way, I lost all the google earth routes when my HDD crashed

But I'm starting over tomorrow morning (I should go to sleep, it's already 4 am ¬¬)

love the the circuit mate and its a lot safer than what i would have done because I personally would have used the old curva 1 and curva 2 because they were banked, flat out and they had not a lot of run off but in this day and age they would be classed as leathal which means that the senna s, which is what you used in your design, is a lot better because its safer.
peace Rob
P.S you coming back is amazing because the first thing i do each day is check whats been posted overnight, and my parents think i should do civil engineering as well

That nurburgring final sector yours looks amazing mate and your Monaco is amazing because you have added 2 new overtaking spots and is very simple where as mine was based arround avenue de la costa which is kinda like a modern day Tamburello in that it is very fast with very little run off area but the main differences are that it curves right instead
of left and is very steeply downhill. In an f1 car it will be gear 6/7 which means that it probably won't happen

Problem with that Nürburgring is that the inclines are probably not suited to this lay out. The part where you enter the nordschleife is a valley. It would be possible, but the Nordschleife would become un-usable.

Nah, not at that point. When I saw Captain Hammer's proposal, I assumed that too, but I spent lots of time checking the elevations in Google Earth, rFactor and GT5, and lots more watching footage both in and out of the track. There is nearly no difference in height between the new track and the spot where I entered the Nordschleife. It's slightly uphill, but nothing out of this world.
Why would it be unusable? I just need a bit of runoff on the opposite sides, without altering the track. The new path connecting with the main straight would not touch the current layous of either Nordschleife or the GP track. Of course you wouldn't be able to drive the Nordschleife while the GP is on the way, but who would want to, when you have 22 F1s having an interesting race, finally!

I walked up that hill by foot, as i been to Rock Am Ring twice, and used the nordschleife as a shortcut between a campsite (somehow i ended up at the caravan camping, despite having a tent) and the festival site (which was a good excuse to get my friends who aren't interested in motor racing to walk on the nordschleife) there's actually somewhere near the service road a rope to help people climbing down the hill, because it's too steep. (and imagine drunk germans doing that, not a pretty sight ) It's something slightly less than than 10 meter in my estimations, and it keeps more or less the same height between the two campings near the service road.
Why it would be unusable? Well i meant you have to make sure it is on the same level as the nordschleife part that goes the other direction, so you can keep on using the old part. Which is impossible, unless you remove the service road, so the race-track can start its descent earlier, which could be a perfect solution.

sepang looks amazing with those change and rather ironically, i was looking at the buenos aries track when that was being posted.
adelade is slightly too long because measured the track this afternoon and it came to 8.0474km but melbourne would be able to host f1as the length come to 5.4705km.
shanghai is the most transformed as you have added at least 5 new overtaking spots
all in all very good designs.
