The opulent reception of the hotel opposite Gare de Ben Guerir was a welcome sight. It felt like heaven to walk barefoot on cold marble on what is the last day I have in Africa on this trip. My final day takes me on a whistle top tour of the remaining major cities of Morocco - Casablanca, Rabat and finally Tangier, where I'll gratefully be boarding the ferry across the strait to Gibraltar.

Arriving in Tangier, the FRS Express ferry is a welcome sight - presenting the opportunity of smooth roads and hygienic toilet facilities once again (well, at least until we get to France)
Image

Image
I opted for Gibraltar due to the slightly more relaxed border for British citizens - although admittedly I'd have to then cross the Spanish frontier shortly after. I don't get to admire home comforts for long, as I have little reason to stop due to having a slap up meal on the ferry over.

Image
I cross the contested La Linea and I'm now in Spain! I tear up the motorway towards Granada - and find a fairly nice hotel dead opposite the Federico García Lorca Granada Airport. Perhaps I should have just flown. I plonk myself down in the small town of Chauchina, and finally get a proper ice cold tapped EUROPEAN beer. It's a Victoria Malaga, but beggars can't be chosers.
Image

I'm hearing on the grapevine a few of the others are well on their way to Scandinavia by now, but I think I have a very very outside shot at finishing on the podium or at least damn close to it. Smooth roads from now on - the race is on!

Here is Peter and Hanse's route today:

Peter and Hanse arrive four minutes over their time limit, which means a 20 minute penalty in the morning. Unless I've missed some really obvious accommodation, this small penalty is just worth it for the difference in driving time.

Day 25: Autobahn Blitz

AMETH: Good morning, Mateo.
MATEO: A good morning, indeed!
ERIS: What's got you fired up this morning?
MATEO: Well, our destination today is Göttingen, Germany.
AMETH: Which means...?
MATEO: Autobahn, baby!
AMETH: ...
ERIS: ...
ERIS: You lost us.
MATEO: The Autobahn is Germany's national highway system.
MATEO: With no speed limit!
ERIS: Oh no.
MATEO: Well, some bits do have speed limits, but the default is an advised speed limit of 130 km/h.
AMETH: Advised?
MATEO: It's the recommended speed, but you won't be getting tickets for going faster.
MATEO: That being said, your insurance will take the speed into accont if something happens.
ERIS: I'm going to regret asking, but how fast do you plan on going?
MATEO: 160 km/h.
ERIS: And we usually do...?
MATEO: 120 km/h yesterday.
ERIS. Greaaaaat.

ROUTE

Image

Start: Mas de la Pinède, 598 Montée des Frigoules, 222 Impasse de la Pinède, 84500 Bollène, France
End: Park Inn by Radisson Göttingen, Kasseler Landstraße 25c, 37081 Göttingen, Germany
Distance: 1095km
Time: 9h 52min

Locale of the Day: Museé de L'Aventure Peugeot

Image

MATEO: Something just came to mind.
ERIS: I do NOT want to talk about the Autobahn.
MATEO: Don't worry, it has nothing to do with cars.
AMETH: What is it, then?
MATEO: We have the Olympics this summer in Paris!
AMETH: Oh, nice!
ERIS: What sports do you watch?
MATEO: Most of the time I'm basic AF & watch the athletics.
MATEO: But there are two sports from Tokyo 2020 I'm interested in.
AMETH: Which are...?
MATEO: For one, don't knock the skateboarding till you've seen it.
ERIS: Sure buddy.
MATEO: But if I had to recommend one sport: SPEED CLIMBING.
ERIS: Huh. It's in the Olympics?
MATEO: Yes & it's amazing.
MATEO: It's as straightforward as you get: Two climbers go up a standardized 15m climbing wall. First one to trigger the sensor at the top wins.
MATEO: The format is an elimination bracket & they go on till the medals get awarded.
AMETH: Why do you like it so much?
MATEO: Simple: these guys DEFY gravity.
MATEO: The wall is 15 metres straight up, right? The men's world record is UNDER 5 SECONDS.
ERIS: ...
AMETH: Okay I need to see this.
(Watches video on YouTube)
AMETH: ...WOW.
MATEO: I know, right?

At Göttingen:
MATEO: Well, good night you two!
AMETH: Good night!
AMETH: ...
ERIS: Uhh, are you okay, Ame?
AMETH: Something's going to go wrong tomorrow, I can feel it.
ERIS: Okay, so I wasn't being paranoid. Cool.

(PSA: Watch the speed climbing at the Olympics, you can thank me later.)

Day 25 has ended, we are currently with 10 people still in the contest, that is still more than half of the starters. Only Forti is still in Africa, but likely not for very long, and everyone else is in Europe, if you consider Turkiye a part of Europe. That's up to you which defenition you follow.
TommyKl and Nuppiz are way ahead and TommyKL is emerging ahead bit by little bit. Behind that, Digitdan seems to be the favourite for the third place, but don't count out Girry or Aislabie yet. Admin is also not doing bad for having started a day behind everyone else.

15213 Klon
15230 DigitDan7
15674 Girry
16540 Aislabie
16879 TommyKl
17186 Nuppiz

Of those still in the race, NickyDustyOwl is leading the back, but he's a few days behind admin who's bent on winning at least something, but don't count out Nicky just yet. He's already escaped death, so who knows! Nuppiz managed to do the most mileage out of everyone, but despite that, is not the closest to the finish line.

Aislabie is leading this, it's likely going to be between him and Klon, with Pinkd56 still an important outsider. Unless Tommy or Nuppiz do something weird , they won't win this.

Digitdan also wins today as he profits from the excellent roads in France and Germany. TommyKl, Nuppiz and NickyDustyOwl have all been hindered a bit by being on a ferry today.

Aislabie is still eading this one. I'd say anyone who has more than 200 points at this point could potentially still win it. Digitdan and Girry seem to be in good form lately so it's still possible.

Day 26: Final Approach

MATEO: Ameth, Eris, good morning.
AMETH: Good morning...
ERIS: Good morning...
MATEO: Um, are you good? You look like you sucked on a lemon.
AMETH: D-don't worry about us, we're fine.
ERIS: Actually, how are you, Mateo? Are you feeling well?
MATEO: I'm fine, why wouldn't I be?
AMETH: ...
ERIS: ...
MATEO: You're being weird.
ERIS: Look, it's fine, nothing you need to concern yourself with.
MATEO: Well, if you say it's fine, then I guess we'll leave it there.

ROUTE

Start: Park Inn by Radisson Göttingen, Kasseler Landstraße 25c, 37081 Göttingen, Germany
End: Hotel Gyllene Uttern, Gyllene Uttern 1, 563 92 Gränna, Sweden

Time: 10h

Locale of the Day: Øresund Bridge

(This part will arrive later)

At Gyllene Uttern:
ERIS: Well, that's another day done & dusted.
MATEO: We're in Scandinavia now, which means it's the home stretch.
AMETH: Any chance of catching the two racers ahead?
MATEO: HELL NO, they'll get to Norway tomorrow by my calculations.
MATEO: But I think we might get third place!
ERIS: Not bad for having two dud days in the race.
MATEO: I'll go ahead & go to bed, don't want to fumble our race now.

Everyone has now reached Europe, as we enter the final countdown.
TommyKl stopped today, agonisingly close to the destination, so unless something terrible happens, and it usually does, he's guaranteed to win, with Nuppiz an honourful second.

Now for the last podium spot, there's a bit more of a contest, Digitdan is clearly in pole-positionbut admin and girry are trailing withing reasonable distance and you can never count out Aislabie. We also seem to have 3 people in the minor contest of the 7th place, as Klon should in theory be close to PinkD and NickyDustyOwl who are very close to each other at this point. And Forti also exists.

16503 Girry
17440 Aislabie
17729 TommyKl
18060 Nuppiz

Admin probably has this one covered as they're a lot closer to the finish as the other contenders, but anything can happen, especially when you're in Russia.

Aislabie's lead is quite big... But as Klon enters the Balkans he can still catch up. Or will Pinkd or Forti pull something out of their hat? Admin and NickyDustyOwl also finally caught up to Frogfoot, who's still stuck fighting for the Wagner group in Sudan last time we heared of her.

2 Girry 829
1 Forti 765

Today we finally broke the average km's record of stage 2 (878 km) with a whopping 896 km as nobody has significant problems today. Klon wins this stage. Aislabie scored points for the 21th leg in a row. Forti and PinkD have yet to win a stage.

And as a result of that, Aislabie's probably gonna win this one easily, though i wouldn't entirely rule out Digitdan's chances yet. Admin is still not ahead of the lowest retiree yet.

Day 27: Last Stretch

ERIS: Okay, so how are we doing, Mateo?
MATEO: We're looking solid! Tom, Yulia & Anniina are going to finish today, but we're the favourites to get that final podium spot.
AMETH: I just checked & Nessa & Petteri will likely get to Finland today.
ERIS: What about Peter & Hanse?
AMETH: They seem to have diverted from our route & are currently in Poland.
MATEO: At the risk of jinxing it, I think we've got P3.
AMETH: We're so close...
AMETH: How does P3 sound, Eri?
ERIS: It's sounds great.
MATEO: Well girls...

At Umeå:
MATEO: Well, it's official: two teams have reached the finish line at Nordkapp.
MATEO: Now, it's time for the fight for third.
AMETH: This is getting exciting!
ERIS: Okay, but we need to sleep. This trip has been rough & we do NOT want to screw up the podium this close.
MATEO: MATEO: Good call. With that, good night ladies!

We have a winner

Tommy KLgot to the public toilet in the North Cape the first of everyone! The young veteran did it!
Nuppiz also finished today and takes an uncontested silver.

But the rest of the gang is still racing, as leg 27 finishes, they have until leg 35 to get classified. But don't worry, there are plenty of other classifications to race for!

Digitdan7 seems to be the favourite for the third place with only admin challinging him as Girry decides to take a short holiday at what i presume is just where he lives and Aislabie is going on a sidequest. Everyone is in Europe now though.

Finishing order
1 TommyKl
2 Nuppiz

Lowest mileage
3042 Rob Dylan (DNF)
4827 Kinnikuniverse (DNF)
5145 Ducktanian (DNF)
6786 pasta_maldonado (DNF)

16891 Klon
16950 Forti
17108 DigitDan7
17420 Girry
17755 TommyKl
18423 Nuppiz
18430 Aislabie

I'd argue admin, NickyDustyOwl and Pinkd56 are the only ones with a shot of winning this one. Aislabie went the other direction with a huge carbon footprint.

Most countries
35 Aislabie

9 Shadaza (DNF)
8 Loadsamoney (DNF)
6 pasta_maldonado (DNF)
5 Kinnikuniverse (DNF)
5 Ducktanian (DNF)
3 Rob Dylan (DNF)

Talking about Aislabie, this also explains his big carbon footprint. And his hunger isn't over yet it seems. Can Klon really bounce back? Admin is still not ahead of one of the participants still stuck in Africa... Well Russia is huge after all.

Stage points

25 Forti 1032
18 Aislabie 990
15 NickyDustyOwl 982
12 DigitDan7 925
10 Girry 917
8 Pinkd56 892
6 Nessafox 846
4 Klon 654
2 Nuppiz 363
1 TommyKl 26

And Finally a win for Forti who seems to get a good pace when it's waay to late to do so. Of all the still active participants, only PinkD hasn't won a stage yet. TommyKl and Nuppiz will obviously not drive any further, but will continue to score points because nobody else is in the race anymore to fill the top 10, they'll score in order of finishing position. This means that, at least in theory, they aren't out of the championship yet.

Championship

281 Aislabie
254 Nuppiz
250 TommyKl
239 DigitDan7
218 Girry

120 Ducktanian (DNF)
73 Frogfoot9013 (DNF)
42 pasta_maldonado (DNF)
33 Kinnikuniverse (DNF)
32 Rob Dylan (DNF)

But it's hard to see who's gonna be able to overtake Aislabie, really.
In the end, the lowest 5 scores are allowed to be dropped as stated before, but it's very unlikely to make a difference. It really only means Shadaza could theoretically still win this, should he decide to return to the game.

One more day, two more sidequests: this time, Peter and Hanse lay down rubber in Russia and Belarus, each time getting as far as the border crossing before immediately turning tail and leaving. This is the last time we have to take significant detours: from now on, it's flat out to Nordkapp.

Day 27: Almost There...

ERIS: So, what's the game plan today?
MATEO: We can actually cover enough distance today to make it to Norway!
MATEO: Hell, I've decided to go the scenic route, since we have time.
AMETH: So, barring any unforseen circumstances, we'll make it to the finish line tomorrow.
ERIS: Do we have anyone close to us?
MATEO: Turns out we're miles ahead, Nessa's in St Petersburg & Petteri's in Helsinki.
ERIS: Podium, here we come!
AMETH: I'll double check, just in case.
AMETH: ...
ERIS: Love, what's with that face?
AMETH: Oh don't worry, it's got nothing to do with us.
AMETH: It's just that apparently, Petteri has a 930 min penalty.
ERIS: ...
MATEO: ...

Start: Scandic Umeå Syd, Yrkesvägen 8, 904 20 Umeå, Sweden
End: Suossjavri fjellstue, Suossjavri 47, 9732 Karasjok, Norway
Distance: 900km
Time: 9h 46min

At Suossjavri:

MATEO: Well, here's our last stop for the race.
ERIS: Huh, it's rather rustic.
AMETH: Well, we are in the Arctic Wilderness pretty much.
MATEO: Not long to go.
MATEO: Tomorrow, we'll make it to Nordkapp.
ERIS: Been one hell of a journey.
AMETH: To think our journey started in Cape Town...
MATEO: Gotta say, it's been great having you two along for the trip.
ERIS: Thanks, Mateo.
AMETH: Well then, shall we turn in for the night? Big day tomorrow.
MATEO: OK then, goodnight!

The race progresses, and the finishers are slowly coming in. Is what i would say... but TommyKl and Nuppiz were so far ahead that Nuppiz could afford a small detour and score some extra points, you never know if it's useful in the end.

Image

https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit? ... 166695&z=4

Furthermore, we can see Digitdan is nearly guaranteed this extra podium spot and admin will almost certainly get that 4th spot, but for 5th the battle is wide open. Girry could easily gotten this but instead he decided he wanted to rest at what is presumably his home and rack up some penalty. We'll see if he actually makes it to Nordkapp or not.

Lowest mileage

17755 TommyKl (Finished)
17871 Forti
18008 DigitDan7
18461 Nuppiz
19257 Aislabie

Whilst Aislabie is well on his way to break the 20000 km mark, it's NickyDustyOwl who's still leading the classification here.

Aislabie's on a roll and probably only Klon can dethrone him, but even that will be a major challenge.

4 Nuppiz 38

As there's only 10 people in the race, that means that winner Tommy still scores points. However as Girry is serving a penalty, he will receive zero points. PinkD also finally wins a stage and Forti suddenly became good, way, way, way too late.

I did say flat out towards Nordkapp, and it's no coincidence that Peter and Hanse stopped the last leg exactly 9 hours, 57 minutes away from the first hotel in Finland.

So we'll stop right before the border of Norway. We could have driven to Karashok and get 2 minutes penalty, but it wasn't worth us since nobody was chasing us anyway.
