Ed Kevin wrote:Wow, this news about the Irish GP has completely taken me by surprise! I've barely been back home since the beginning of the season, and when I was it was only for a night or two like when I was on the Late Late Show, so I really had no idea how big F1's been getting. It's really incredible, how in the space of a couple of months Ireland's gone from a place with a couple of unsuccessful drivers in the past and no real interest to a country that - so I've heard - pretty much shuts down on Sunday afternoons, with RTÉ, the national broadcaster, showing all the races live. I guess that growth is reflected in this news about the race.

Mondello is actually really near the town my mam grew up in, so it's a real home race for me. It was also the first track I ever raced a car on, so I've a lot of fond memories there. I'm looking forward to it already, though I'm aware of the amount of pressure I'll be under. Hopefully I'll be as competitive then as I am now, and hopefully the rumours I've heard about us switching to a new, more reliable engine manufacturer for next year are true, because it'd be an absolute nightmare to retire from that race with another blown engine. Before that, though, I've got the rest of this season to look forward to.

Is there any changes for Monaco?

Also, just a reminder to Pamphlet and East Londoner that Patrese and Hunt will be able to race after this round

Before you think this is an invocation of Mecha's Law...

An obscure newspaper wrote:Lees not cleared to take part in Monaco GP

Tyrrell has nominated Thomas Nurmester to stand in place of Lees for Monaco.

1979 Monaco Grand Prix

Newsflash
FIA President announced an Irish Grand Prix to be held sometime next year.

Tyrrell driver Geoff Lees was taken ill with food poisoning, and he will be replaced by reserve and test driver, Thomas Nurmester.

Qualifying

Image

Callum McAllister took his 3rd pole of the year, ahead of Arnoux and Scheckter, but it remains to be seen if he can convert it into victory. The two Joneses done well to line up 6th and 7th on the grid, and Jan Lammers was mired down in 20th position behind both Arrows. At the back of the grid, Brambillia qualifies for the first time this year, with team mate Guidetti missing the cut. Jenkins lines up 28th ahead of Andretti, the American having a nightmare qualifying session. The ATS/JLD squad partied into the night after Pierre Depault managed to drag the ATS onto the grid in 30th, with Stuck only in 34th. Rossler, Rosberg, Ongais, Stuck, Fittipaldi, Guidetti, Gabbiani, and Rebaque all failed to qualify.

Race - 72 laps
McAllister managed to stay ahead into turn 1, with Scheckter passing Arnoux for 2nd place. The field managed to get through the first corner without incident. Approaching the chicane, Reutemann divided pass Ed Kevin for 4th place, the Irishman been caught unawares by the move. On lap 3, Jean-Pierre Jabouille made a move on Laffite for 9th place. The pair went side by side through Rascasse, with Jabouille on the inside, but he moved back over onto the racing line too quick, with Laffite's right front tapping Jabouilles left rear, tipping the Renault man into the wall and retirement. Laffite continued unharmed.

By lap 20, Scheckter had a 20 second lead over McAllister, Reutemann, Arnoux, Kevin, and Alan Jones in the Lotus. However, Villeneuve was on a charge, and passed Jones into turn 1 two laps later. On lap 23, McAllister slowed to a halt around the swimming pool section with smoke pouring from the back of a car - another Williams retirement.

Carlos Reutemann began to eat into Scheckter's 17 second lead, and by lap 40, had caught him, but was unable to find a way through. Scheckter was obviously holding Reutemann up, and the delay allowed Arnoux to close on the leadin gtwo . On lap 51, Reutemann had enough, and poked his nose down the inside of Scheckter into St.Devote, and muscled his way through. Scheckter managed to fend off Arnoux up the hill, the Ferrari unable to find a way through.

Two laps later, Ed Kevin's Ligier slowed gradually to a halt along the start finish straight, ending his day from a solid 4th position. Another engine failure for Ligier won't go down well. Lammers was promoted into 4th posistion, ahead of Villeneuve in 5th.

Reuteman crossed the line to win after 72 laps, with Scheckter 24 seconds behind. Arnoux couldn't find a way past Scheckter and had to settle for 3rd place, while Jan Lammers lead home Villeneuve, Laffite and Jones. Thomas Nurmester put in a great drive on his Formula One debut to clinch the last point, 5 seconds ahead of Piquet. Depault and Brambillia ended their first race of 1979 2 laps down, while Marshal Jenkins was releived to make it to the finish.

I'd have thought that the Cosworth units would be more reliable, but it seems we're not the only ones having some issues with them, Ligier also seem to have their fair share of failures. But we must look into the positives: we're leading both championships, but with scarce margins, so we need to keep on working hard.

And Mr Clarke, if you do succeed in replacing the trusty Cosworth DFV with an 'all-American' engine, make sure it is confined to your car only. I refuse to drive a car fitted with such a rudimentary, yobbish engine.

Technically, that Lotus ground effect car could impossibly be competitive with a Ferrari V12  it wouldn't even fit in. And neither could any car being ran by RAM be able to be somewhat decent...
This proves however that real talent (Lammers, Brancatelli) shines trough.

Shadow: Bellof to be given chance.
The Shadow team have decided to give German hotshot Stefan Bellof time in the car as they look to evaluate his performances before next season. "Keke hasn't been as prolific as we thought and we feel a period away from the car will help. Therefore, Stefan will replace Keke with immediate effect."

I suppose the one positive that comes from it is that you won't get stricken by F1 Deprivation which will inevitably set in some time during the summer break, turning the forum into a warzone. As for the rest of us though... :|

Sorry to hear. I was enjoying this championship.

Now you won't overtake me in posts anytime soon.

A few things about 1980:

1)Is everybody ahppy with the grid sizes and the amount of DNQ's? I know this is a major problem in the F1RWRS.
2)I was thinking of letting team owners choose from any chassis in the 1983/1984 mod, couple with an engine of their choosing. (The teams would pick according to 79 championship position). The mod includes all chassis used in both seasons, including variations. Does this sound okay to you?
3) A definate addition to the calendar will be Ireland, but is there any other circuit you'd liek? I wouldn't like to expand the calendar anymore though.
4)Should 3 car teams be allowed?

It will be open to new people if 1980 and later reach or the entry list will remain 'closed'?

1979 is not over yet, but for 1980 I'm considering taking teams off of people who have not shown up since the entry process and giving them to new people

1)I'm happy of how many DNQ's there are.
2)Maybe as it gives team owners more freedom to choose.
3)Maybe the Caesar's Salad Grand Prix,or a race in Estoril.
4)No.
My friend's USB drive spoiled, spilled tea on her laptop and had a bird poo in her hand.

What did she do in her past life to deserve this?
