Win the championship by a margin of 3 points or less

EDIT: Scratch that Nelson Piquet done it twice

A very good guess - as you made me look it up to make sure - but that is not the answer. Sixteen drivers including Schumacher have won the title by three points or less and two of them - Schumacher and Piquet - did it twice.

But with that, I'll reveal the first hint: The first driver to achieve this was Ascari in 1952.

i know Ascari Failed to finish one race in 1952 on his way to the championship. Vettel has had only one retirement in 2012 and i remember Schumacher only retirement in 2004 was at Monaco not sure about other season.

Fail to finish only one race in championship wining year? Which i just reealised cant be right as Hamilton did it in 2015

Wrong again. Vettel also had only one retirement in 2011 and 2013. Same for Hamilton last year.

Next hint: The last driver to achieve this before Vettel was Hamilton in 2008.

Well my next attempt would have been to say that their closest competitor in the standings was a Ferrari.
Farini was 2nd in 1952, Barrichello in 2002 and 2004, Massa in 2008 and Alonso in 2012. Then i remevered that Alonso finished second in 2010 and 2013.
And then i though that they failed to start the first race in the year they won the championship from pole position but Hamilton started the 2008 Australian GP from pole so its not that.

i have a feeling though i am over complicating this and its probably the most simple thing ever.

Let's say to become championship winner without being the driver who scored the most fastest lap of the season

Secure the championship in a race in which he finished behind his nearest challenger?

Haven't looked it up to verify so might be wrong but Hamilton and Vettel in '08 and '12 and remember Schumacher limping across the line in '03 and must have done it at least once more for one of the other six I guess even those years he wrapped it up super early

And still, nobody has gotten it yet! It's not as complicated as some of you are making it out to be! I will now list all of the champions who have this achievement:

Alberto Ascari
Juan Manuel Fangio
Jack Brabham
John Surtees
Graham Hill
Emerson Fittipaldi
James Hunt
Alan Jones
Niki Lauda
Ayrton Senna
Nigel Mansell
Damon Hill
Michael Schumacher
Lewis Hamilton
Sebastian Vettel

The answer (I think) is that during the said seasons, the driver (during one or more races) failed to lead a single lap.

Given the first hint vis-a-vis Ascari in 1952, it can't be - he had team-mates on the podium with him every time he won, bar the season finale at Monza.

Since I have already prepared a question, here it goes:

Since the last two decades, Ferrari have retained a unique 100% record. Not a 100% entry list record since some other teams also have this. So 100% on what?

I'll give you hints as time progresses

They have entered every season with at least one driver who competed for them the previous year?

McLaren replaced both drivers in 2007
Williams and Mercedes (Brawn) in 2010
Red Bull (as Jaguar) in 2003
"Lotus" (Renault) in 2012
Force India in 2014
Manor, Sauber and Toro Rosso in 2015

Ferrari last replaced both drivers in 1996, 20 years ago.

You got it!
German GP 2000: Ex-Mercedes worker invaded the track at the 1st forest straight. Barrichelo in Ferrari took his first ever win.

British GP 2003: Ex-forgottheenglish invaded the circuit at Hangar Straight. Barrichelo wins again, in a Ferrari

~~~~~~~
Singapore GP 2015: A bored man walks around the Anderson Bridge(?) then walks off. Vettel wins, for Ferrari.
100% record on winning a race affected by invaders
:D
Woohoo :D I must admit I don't think I'd have gotten that one before the safety car hint, immediately brought to mind Rubens two wins then I remembered about the guy at Singapore after that :)
Next question:
The opening race of the 1986 F3000 season at Silverstone was won by Pascal Fabre. However a fellow future reject, driving a car with a link to his future F1 career had led the race earlier on, who was he and what was the link?
Good guesses, but the Silverstone race was the one race that Tarquini didn't compete in 1986. Pirro was there and did indeed lead the race, but not who I was thinking of - in fact he was the whole reason for me specifying the link to the driver's F1 stint in order to narrow it down.
Let's do a dark shot:
It is Alex Caffi, later in 1989 he would be the last driver to drive F3000/other car than F1 to compete at an F1 official event. With an expected result
You'd be right to take a shot in the dark, although it wasn't Caffi (or - while no doubt possessing the talent to win a race as a -5 year old, Chilton)
One clue seeing as he was mentioned, as well as competing in that race and being a future F1 reject, the driver also has one other quite significant thing in common with Emanuele Pirro.
