Round 7 - French Grand Prix, Paul Ricard, 7th July 1985

Qualifying Results:
Surrounded by great swathes of French fans - some of them adorning - Prost took pole in Paul Ricard, nearly four seconds faster than either of his Ferrari team-mates. In fact, Prost's greatest threat came from the Minardi of de Cesaris, who's flat-twelve engine propelled it down the Mistral Straight at nearly three-hundred kilometers-an-hour. In addition to Ferrari-engined cars, anything powered by a BMW was sure to have a great qualifying session; Bellof and Senna made the top-six in their super-low-drag Williams', and Derek Warwick put his Tyrrell seventh on the grid.

With talent and an Alfa Romeo engine, Italian Pierluigi Martini qualified a brilliant eighth, in a season that has - so far - seen no points for the Alfa junior team; his team-mate, Teo Fabi, could not find a balanced setup for the slower corners, having to tail-off the throttle when his rear tires began to slide mid-corner.

Rounding out the top-ten was Johansson in the first of the factory-backed BMW cars, and Pironi in the final Ferrari. Below them, Mansell and Watson worked hard to put the Brabhams nearer the front of the grid, and struggled with the underpowered Porsche engine, which was rumoured to be the slowest of all the works powerplants in play.

Race Results:
Prost's misfortune - as terribly sad as it may have been - would be to the benefit of team-mates Alboreto and Pironi, and the pair brought home a hard-fought one-two win for Ferrari. Bellof drove another strong race for Williams, hoping to still assert dominance as the leading star of the team. De Cesaris would soon see any hope of a podium finish slip away, as he was swamped by the aforementioned Bellof in addition to the fast-moving Ferraris almost from the start of the race, but with the retirement of de Angelis, a healthy three points were picked-up for the Minardi team. Later in the race, the wily Mansell put the moves on Johansson, like a girl hanging out alone with her guy-friend who secretly has a crush on her, but both finished in the points. Warwick was a rare casuality of retirement by something other than engine failure, and his potential fifth-place finish dissapeared when his Hewland five-speed ground to pieces. Jarier could not find the same pace as the Englishman, and was well behind Johansson's BMW.

'Kinnock completes overthrow of Thatcher government' - The Observer, Sunday, 14th July 1985
Neil Kinnock, leader of the Labour party, has been elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. This marks the first successful motion of no confidence in Britain's democratically-elected government, since 1979.

The build-up to the event began with an accusation of dishonesty from former conservative Defence Secretary, Michael Heseltine, who believed then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to have "drummed-up claims for the purpose of giving Westland [Helicopters] to the Americans", and then subsequently leaking a letter to the British press, containing these apparent falsehoods.

After making these claims in the House of Commons in April this year, Michael Heseltine was thrown-out; he announced his resignation to the press immediately afterwards.

Several days later, evidence came to light from both anonymous sources - and several members of Thatcher's cabinet - that Heseltine's allegations contained substantial elements of truth. Home Secretary, Leon Brittan, would resign a few days later.

A vote of no confidence, which had been initiated by the Conservatives, was successful when voted-on by the House of Commons, in early May. In what had been a shocking event in British politics, Prime Minister Thatcher chose not to seek a vote of confidence from the House, but rather called a general election. It has now been declared that the Labour party, lead by Welshman Neil Kinnock, has won.

Speaking to a congregation of news outlets yesterday, Kinnock spoke of his desire to "do-away with class warfare", "keep a steady hand on unions", and spoke passionately about "the importance of keeping Britain green and tidy."

Round 8 - British Grand Prix, Silverstone, 21st July 1985

Qualifying Results:
A wet qualifying session resulted in some erratic performances up-and-down the field; only Prost seemed immune to making clumsy mistakes and waddling around the shallow puddles on the circuit, while everyone else struggled. Once again, the Frenchman proved himself to be the calmest of the three minds at Ferrari, and would start the race from pole position. The power of the flat-twelve engine in the Minardi certainly made a difference down the hanger straight, but de Cesaris' talent played equal part in attaining second on the grid; team-mate Patrese did not seem comfortable in the other car, and spun-away several of his attempts at flying laps. Bellof seized the opportunity to take the fight to the Ferraris, and would out-qualify Alboreto, Pironi and his team-mate Senna. As expected due to the conditions, there were surprises; Rosberg in the Arrows, and Winkelhock in the BMW, were at the front of the grid. Massively outperforming their team-mates were Warwick in the Tyrrell, and Teo Fabi - who made it into the top-ten, while Martini struggled to qualify for the race.

Race Results:
Sunday's rain would see a large portion of the field fall off the track, or their turbochargers fail due to water leakage.

Prost's vision advantage over the rest of the field was obvious right from the first corner, and for each remaining lap, he put-on a masterclass of steady, composed driving, while soaking back-markers with spray from his rear wing end-plates as he lapped them. De Cesaris would retain his second-place, fending-off early-race attacks from the Williams' and Arrows', although he could not avoid being put a lap-down by Prost's Ferrari. Steffan Bellof was a victim of the rain, retiring from a podium-finish late in the race, but a charging Senna made up ground constantly, eventually passing Rosberg, and quietly taking four points when the checkered flag came out. Nannini's blistering race-pace possibly hurt him more than helped, since it left the Arrows team wondering why he couldn't drive that fast during Saturday's qualifying; nonetheless, it was another double-points finish for Arrows, and the team has begun to pull-away from fourth-place team, Tyrrell, who's back-to-back retirements would see the team begin to slip down the Constructor's Championship. The importance of de Angelis' sixth-place finish was not to be overlooked; it was his first points of the season, and only the second points-finish by the Lotus team, so far this year.

Special Event - Williams
PMC - Peter McIntosh Consultants - Motorsport, was incorporated last year to compete in the European Formula Three series, as part of a dual-team relationship with ex-F1 entrant, BS Fabrications - a British engineering company. Success came quickly, with the pair's three car-entry consistently scoring points. This year, with sponsorship - negotiated by Russell Spence - from Warmastyle radiators, the team have been entering a single car in the British Formula Three for Spence and enjoyed four wins, but a lack of funding has forced McIntosh to fold the F3 operation. More importantly, PMC have remained in the penultimate level of single-seater racing - now re-branded as the International Formula 3000 championship, as a self-run outfit.

So far, F3000 has proved difficult for PMC Motorsport Ltd, who purchased two legacy Williams FW09 chassis' - as used in the 1984 Formula One season - but even with the talent of Belgian Thierry Tassin and former F1 driver, Lamberto Leoni, the team's only points have come from a third-place at Pau, thanks to Leoni. The team's struggle for money, combined with the FW09's lack of performance, was too much for Tassin, who moved to Eddie Jordan's team to drive a March, after the first two races in Britain. PMC skipped round three of the F3000 series, leaving a lone Leoni to struggle through the next four races around Europe, before eventually jumping ship to Pierluigi Corbari's 'Corbari Italia' squad.

With no drivers or budget, the future looks bleak for PMC Motorsport Ltd.

Peter McIntosh is not ignorant of both the domination of the Ferrari team, and the relative competitiveness of the Williams FW10 powered by the BMW M14, and believes that - with the engineering aid of his PMC F3000 outfit - the Williams Formula One team can win the first of many championships, this year.

The PMC F3000 team require three things:

• An immediate injection of cash - to the amount of £1.85 million - to enter their FW09 cars into the next round of the International F3000 series at Enna, and beyond, to the end of the season.
• An agreement from the Williams team to a 'profit & loss sharing' arrangement, where by - each year - the Williams team collect any excess profit (after re-investment into needed costs) generated by PMC Motorsport Ltd, but must also pay-off any (unpaid) debt undertaken by PMC, effectively guaranteeing that PMC will remain solvent indefinitely.
• A guarantee of ownership of the Williams team's legacy (previous season) chassis. The consequence of this demand, is that the option for a Formula One team to re-use their legacy chassis will no longer be available to the Williams team.

The Williams team will have significant power over PMC, in the form of new decisions to make, each season:

• Choosing the two drivers PMC will sign for the season.
• If there is more than one engine supplier in the upcoming F3000 season, choosing the engine supplier PMC will sign for the season.
• If there is more than one tyre supplier in the upcoming F3000 season, choosing the tyre supplier PMC will sign for the season.
• If there is more than one fuel supplier in the upcoming F3000 season, choosing the fuel supplier PMC will sign for the season.

In return for agreeing to this understanding, PMC Motorsport Ltd are willing to offer the Williams team a plethora of advantages and benefits:

• Automatic and free driver training (equivalent to the driver training D&T opportunity) taking place for both PMC drivers, at each F3000 race weekend.
• Guaranteeing the team first right of refusal on PMC's two drivers, so that Williams may bring either - or both - of their F3000-disciplined drivers into the F1 team, at any time; this effectively provides Williams with a 'junior team', in which potential talent can be placed for long-term training and improvement, before elevating that talent into Formula One.
• One additional D&T opportunity, following race events where F1 and F3000 events do clash; there are two such occasions remaining in the season, and there will be three such occasions next season.
• Two additional D&T opportunities, following race events where F1 and F3000 do not clash; there are six such occasions remaining in the season, and there will be thirteen such occasions next season. Note, that no additional opportunities will be available this (19th-21st July 1985) weekend.
• A 33% increase in reward from all D&T opportunities taken (equivalent to the difference in D&T reward between a two-car, and three-car, team).
• If Williams approach an F1 engine supplier who also currently supplies PMC with engines, Williams will receive a bonus to their chances of signing that engine supplier.
• If Williams approach an F1 tyre supplier who also currently supplies PMC with tyres, Williams will receive a bonus to their chances of signing that tyre supplier.
• If Williams approach an F1 fuel supplier who also currently supplies PMC with fuel, Williams will receive a bonus to their chances of signing that fuel supplier.
• If both Williams and PMC use the same engine supplier, and if Williams' deal with the supplier permits development (i.e. a semi-works, or works, deal), they will receive a 33% increase in D&T rewards for any engine development performed.
• If both Williams and PMC use the same engine supplier, and if Williams' deal with the supplier permits development (i.e. a semi-works, or works, deal), they will receive a 33% increase in D&T rewards for any tyre development performed.
• If both Williams and PMC use the same engine supplier, and if Williams' deal with the supplier permits development (i.e. a semi-works, or works, deal), they will receive a 33% increase in D&T rewards for any fuel development performed.

* Accept the offer, and form a partnership with PMC. After accepting the offer, the Williams team will be prompted to select two drivers to replace Tassin and Leoni, in PMC's FW09s. Remember, that every chassis you develop will be eventually passed-down to PMC in future, and the performance and reliability of your cars determine their success; inheriting a better previous-year chassis will improve PMC's financial situation by earning increased amounts of prize money, which will result in a smaller debt - or greater profit - the Williams team will pay, or collect, respectively. Note, that PMC's sponsorship activities will remain micro-managed internally by the team.
* Decline the offer, and allow PMC to collapse.

(IN character) Williams would like to ask for some points of clarification regarding this potential merger of PMC and their requirements:

• Would the injection of cash be all that is required this season? As Williams would like to ensure that we will not financially jeopardise our chances for 1986

• How would the profit and loss work per season? Is this calculated at the end of a season, at the start before bids, after bids or is it paid in installments over the season? Just so WIlliams can ensure that there is always enough capital within the teams

• Would the legacy chassis after PMCs year of ownership spare one chassis of each seasons car, so Williams can display each seasons car in their Grove factory? (I may be pushing it with this question, as the answer here will not affect my decision - the no-use rule of last years chassis is not a problem. Just adding a little more to the Role Play!)

The Williams team are very hopeful about the outcome of the merger, and believe that long term this will be the best way for Formula 1 to sport a team that can regularly challenge Ferrari
