"I'd love it if we beat them, LOVE it" Award for the driver/team with a dominant lead in the points towards the end of the season, only to stuff it all up and someone else winning it?

Mansell in 1986 for example?

Sounds good to me. I think Hamilton in 2007 should qualify as well. Though I think there should be a different name - maybe something like "And what is he DOING?" in order to capture the sense of bewilderment at the driver's sudden and inexplicable lack of form. And also because it's adapted from a Murrayism applying to Deletraz, thus putting the driver/team in the same light as him.

Michael Schumacher in 1997, Alain Prost in 1983, Niki Lauda in 1976 (if he wanted to be called himself a race driver, then he should have coped with the rain at Fuji), Clay Regazzoni in 1974, Jim Clark in 1964.

What you're forgetting with Lauda is that it was the 1970s and Lauda had recently had a life-threatening crash.

And Lauda had missed several races due to his life threatening crash, which was a big part of why he had lost so much of his earlier advantage.

No, I didn't forget it. Okay, getting injured wan't really his fault, but for the sake of it it's a perfectly valid example for this award. And I'll insist he was a coward for not racing in Fuji. If he was a racing driver, then he should have coped with that. As it's sometimes said, fortune smiles the brave, and James Hunt was brave enough to get out and try to nail the title. He did so despite a puncture, after running half the race in the lead and finishing 3rd, winning by a single point.

Newcastle United in the 1995-96 Premier League were utterly romping away with the title, were top of the league by something like 18 points (six wins ahead), and after christmas all the other teams worked out how to beat Newcastle, especially Manchester United, who eventually won it, but with a day to go and with an outside mathematical chance (which was impossible essentially) this is what a rather emotional Kevin Keegan (the Newcastle manager) said:

In which case, you are also calling Larry Perkins, Carlos Pace, and Emerson Fittipaldi cowards (they also pulled out of the race). You also discount the fact that it was also very foggy, that the track was new to the F1 calendar, that a year later Gilles Villeneuve had an accident which killed 2 spectators, and in subsequent years there have been a number of terrifying sports car crashes at the track.

1-Yes, they're also cowards. As much as I respect their decision, for me, they're cowards.
2-Yes, it was foggy, but if someone managed to lap there without nothing more than a bit of fuss, it was OK. Mind you, on these years, many drivers didn't care about foggy weather. There's always a bit of fog when it rains anyway.
3-OK, so it was new. Maybe you have a bit of a point here.
4-First, the same happened with Mark Webber in Valencia this year, remember? If he didn't kill anybody it was because there was more run-off area than it was on circuits before. Besides, those two spectators were on a forbidden zone.
5-That has to do with the safety of old racing cars more than to the circuit.
6-There's not much point in continue to discuss this anyway. Being a coward or not, Lauda's lead melted down badly with his Nürburgring crash, and he eventually lost the title, so this example meets the criteria perfectly.

How about Rene Arnoux for "Hang Up The Keys"?

I'm thinking of the years he was at Ligier in the late 80s trundling around at the back, DNQing several times and blocking everyone lapping him (especially Prost), when he was in his 40s and the legendary James Hunt comment at Monaco.

It's difficult to move Jones, Hill or Mansell off the Hang up the Keys, even for Schumacher and Arnoux. I even think Trulli could be a contender if he stays for another couple of years.

How about Jean Christoph Bouillon for "You Lucky Bastard". He only scored 3 points. It's mainly because of his 6th place at Monza when he passed Max Papis on the last lap.

They're not in that category listed above, but two more "You Lucky Bastards" could be Monteiro and Karthikeyan as there's no way they'd have got their 3rd and 4th places respectively at Indy '05 without Michelin messing up its tyre!!

In the BBC's F1 forum after the Turkish Grand Prix, Eddie Jordan pretty much made an outright nomination for Michael Schumacher to get the Hang Up The Keys award. David Coulthard admitted he wasn't enjoying it anymore in 2008 and quit at the right time (does anyone think he would have done what Vettel & Webber did in the RB5?), and told of his experiences of Damon Hill saying the same thing after he knew he'd hung on too long (and was a recipient of the HUTK award anyway).

John Love's 2nd place in the 1967 South African GP
Peter Gethin's win in the 1971 Italian GP
