Only one problem with this - there is no race at High Speed Ring in the Sunday Cup in GT5, nor are there any readily available used cars under 10,000 credits (I can only think of one under 10,000 car that I have seen in the used lot - some rubbish Hyundai coupe). I guess I'll have to set the PS2 up again if I am going to participate in this.

Problem 1 is surely solved by just doing time trial, I am hunting for a car under 10,000 now and will update this post if I find one.

EDIT: Only 1 car in GT5 under 10k. A racing Kart.

20,000 could be a good limit, as that is the starting amount in GT5 and all the used car prices seem to have increased a lot between GT4 and GT5.(For example: you could get an early model Lancer Evo or Impreza WRX STi for under 10k in GT4 but you cant even get a knackered Citroen 2cv under 10k in GT5).

Agreed, maybe for future challenges we should have a car limit or engine limit since prices vary between the games. I'm about to do the challenge in the cheapest (proper) car I could find. a 1991 Honda Civic Sir-II, 1.6ltr engine with 167bhp. Cost 11,546cr and it's the cheapest used car on my game at the moment.

On my PSP version of GT, I can't find Sunday Cup, nor can I easily find how much I paid for each car! And I won't have time before the end of the year to try my PS3... I'll just try the Time Trial in one of my cheaper, lower-powered models I think. After all,:

Okay, that is where my lack of knowledge of GT5 and my lack of care regarding GTPSP came into play. I need your opinion: would it be too late and too harmful for those who have already begun working on their time to change the upper price limit to 15,000 credits?

I'll just check the used car lots a few times and see how the 15000 credit cars in GT5 compare to the 10000 credit cars in GT4. Also just remembered that GT3 doesn't have a used car lot.

Maybe it would just be better to have a different class of competition for each game. That way we can account for differences like car price and tracks across each game, while making it as fair as possible for anyone to win.

I think I may have just found the perfect car for this challenge...

...and it only cost me 12,059 credits. It is (supposedly) Iris Red in colour (who are they trying to kid) and has a fully automatic transmission. Reject of the Race, here I come.

Thats me thowing down the gauntlet in my Civic on GT5. Klon, I'll send you the details via e-mail.

I also got a time of 1:55.780 in the racing Kart. The only car technically legal to take part in this challenge on GT5

I have actually found a good car for under 10k in GT5, a 1985 Mazda RX7. Now here's the big decision: do I use the RX7 to try and win or do I use the pink Honda to win the bonus point for the most unique vehicle.

EDIT: I've found a car even better then both the Fit and RX7. What could be more rejectful than a 30hp kei car from the early 1970's that shares a name with a certain F1 car powered by a W12. It is the Honda Life Step Van, built in 1972 and with the new car repainting option in GT5, has been resprayed in Papaya Orange.

There's time until 31st, so no hurry with that.

Klon wrote:*Oil changes etc. are tuning as well. Also, forgive me if I use the wrong names, I "only" have the German versions of the game(s).

No oil changes? I myself think that it would fit to the "cheapskate" style we're using here perfectly, as it only costs 50 credits and is quite essential with used cars. But, if you want to keep it that way, I won't object.

It's currently Day 4474 in my GT4 save game, so it's fair to say that I've spent quite a while with this game, of which a lot has been spent by collecting money with the same method BlindCaveSalamander mentioned (only instead with the Mercedes CLK Touring Car, given as a price from winning Mercedes' "Legens of the Silver Arrow" event).

Well, let's see what's on the used car market today. In line with the 10,000 Cr budget, the most powerful car is currently a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR '92, with 222 (without oil change)/246 (with oil change) horses, 278/308 Nm of torque, a rather nice 4WD configuration and a relatively small weight with only 1240kg. All this for 9,582 Cr. I have fond memories of this particular model, as it was the first car I bought in GT4 (being the most powerful one available under 10k) when I started this game four years ago. The one currently on sale even has the same color as mine, being Pyrenees Black!

However, I want to make a suggestion. How about if the 10,000 Cr price limit not only includes the car itself, but the tuning applied on it as well? I.e. the car's price and the Weight Reduction Stage 1 mustn't have a combined price of over 10k. If my suggestion is OK, I've already looked for an alternative to that Lancer I wrote of above:

Nissan Skyline GTS-t Type M '89
Type: FR
Power: 192/212 HP
Torque: 238/264 Nm
Mass: 1260 kg
Price: 8,347 Cr

I'll make my decision once my suggestions are decided upon by Klon. In the meantime, I'll give both of these cars a spin in the Arcade Mode.

Oh BTW which tyres will we be using? Are the Sports Mediums that come with every car OK, or should we opt for the freely-available road (Economy/Luxury/Road) tires instead?

Of course we can't impose new rules amid a competition, so if we're going to use new rules, they cannot be applied until the next race.

If someone could give a rough estimate of the price differences between GT4 and GT5, then perhaps we could work out how the price limit is imposed on different games.

With all the issues would it just be easier to use arcade mode, select a track, a basic car (with no upgrades) and for us to get the quickest lap we can?

might be the best way to start, and in the meantime work out the rules, as they seem complicated
but we could keep this championship going while the other has started

Just finished my drive with the Skyline, and I feel that I couldn't have possibly driven faster (well maybe a tenth or so but you'll get my meaning). Although I won't be scoring much bonus points with my unimaginary choice of a pitch black R32 Skyline.

I bought a PS3 just for Gran Turismo HD... and this was a week after the Japanese launch...

This week I have mainly been playing GT5 with a nice 46" 3D TV , all I can say apart from it feeling like playing a game with sunglasses on, the 3D effect is very good and does help judging distances from you and the other cars much better :)

In the end I decided to take this seriously and raced in the RX7. Let this just be a warning to those who are going to use Comfort tyres; they are terrible, making much tyre screeches and producing more smoke from both the front tyres (when cornering) and the rear tyres (when accelerating) than a reggae band trying to think up lyrics to their songs.

I attempted with four different vehicles with varying results, but on the PSP version, you cannot modify nor buy used - you can only buy new. And it is either Time Trial or your choice of track and car - no Sunday Cups or anything.

By the way, for reference, the 'cars' I used were:

Mini Cooper 1.3i '98
VW Beetle 1100 Standard '49
Daihatsu Midget II D type '98
Fiat 500 R '72

The Daihatsu, if you were wondering why the word 'car' was in marks.

I'm too late
I haven't been on the game since before Christmas and haven't checked the forum for a couple of days. Now I find I have 20 minutes to find a suitable car, get up to speed and record a decent time. I would prefer to save my dignity and withdraw from the event!

Something like Jim Clark Trophy, but instead of awarding drivers of cars equipped with naturally-aspirated engines, you can award drivers who are the best in each game.
Imagine that - Oscar Larrauri GT2 Trophy, Esteban Tuero GT3 Trophy, Piercarlo Ghinzani GT4 Trophy, Alex Caffi GT5 Trophy etc.
