That's essentialy correct, but there's an added twist: "show them what you are made of" would literally translate "fa' loro vedere chi sei". However in colloquial Italian, the "loro" (3rd person plural) is usually substituted with "gli" (3rd person singular). It's grammatically wrong, but nobody cares

All true. The difference being that that gli is used more in speech, and loro should be used in good quality writing (well, that's what I was taught anyway ). Anyway, I'll stop talking about Italian grammar now.
