Just read the opening post, and you'll find out that USAC has added another race to their USAC Gold Crown. It's a sort-of non-championship race, because the Indy 200 doesn't count to the IndyCar standings, whereas the Indy 500 does. Therefore, participation at the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World isn't mandatory. Those who wish to enter, just need to announce their entry in this thread.

Entry list for the USAC Indy 200 at Walt Disney World
TBA

Entering all the Team Menard Cars for engine durability tasting. If the engines can be less prone to failure, they'll sit on the front row for the 500 and might even win.

There are theoretically as many regular spots as possible. But all teams have to go through qualifying, as there are only so many available pits at each track ;).

Meanwhile, entries for the USAC Indy 200 are closed, and the qualifying will be up tonight. As for other mile-long ovals, only 26 cars will qualify for the race.

EDIT: While qualifying will come tonight indeed, I can already post the lap times for the first two training sessions.

Not shocked seeing Luyendyk up in the top 5 in times with Goodyear slightly behind. Eddie Cheever being in the mid 20s best is a little worrisome. At least the Menard Buicks appear to be fast, but I wonder if they'll last the race.

Some surprise are there indeed. Like Target Chip Ganassi failing to qualify two of their cars, or likewise Team Menard. But such things can happen in a 12-lap qualy session (You should be glad that I didn't go for a four-lap qualifying  ).

And while I'm at it, here are the race results of the USAC Indy 200.

Jacques Villeneuve (Team Rahal)                   DNF lap 19
Luca Badoer (Brahma Team Green)                   DNF lap 13
Franck Freon (Comptech Racing)                     DNF lap 7
Tony Stewart (Brahma Team Green)                   DNF lap 6
Gil de Ferran (Team Rahal)                         DNF lap 2
Juan Manuel Fangio II (Della Penna Racing)         DNF lap 1

The start of the 1996 racing season was pretty eventful. At very first lap, Juan Manuel Fangio II spun out at turn one, causing the first full-course yellow of the day. During the caution period, Gil de Ferran suffered from engine misfire, which would also end his day very early. The ensuring caution period was short, and the race went back to green on the forth lap. At the restart, Michael Andretti took the lead from Emerson Fittipaldi, and was about to build a large gap between him and Emmo. But at lap 6, Tony Stewart tried to pass Franck Freon, only to tangle with him. Stewart crashed at turn three, and was very infuriated with Freon. The Frenchman had to end his race at lap 7, because he damaged his rear suspension in the incident. Stewart tried to confront Freon, but the rookie from Indiana had to be seperated from Freon by pit crews from both teams.
After the race restarted on lap 10, Michael Andretti's lead was increasing, and Emerson Fittipaldi had a hard time to keep up with him. Meanwhile, Robby Gordon and Arie Luyendyk were rolling up the field from behind. Both could make up some ground, as the race went cautionless until lap 74, where a big accident happened. Naoki Hattori had made up enough ground to Emerson Fittipaldi, and wanted to pass him. Oddly enough, he tried it at the fast turn two. Fittipaldi tried to block Hattori's path, only for both to tangle and crashing very hard into the wall.
This should have handed the race victory to Michael Andretti, but Mario's son had his family's legendary misfortune, when his engine gave up on him at lap 168. Robby Gordon and Arie Luyendyk were fighting for the lead now, but Arie had to make a late stop under green, which ended up costing him a lap. Gordon on the other hand could cruise to an easy victory.

Bad lack for Emerson, but at least he was fast enough to snatch the pole. As for Andrea - he made a quiet race finishing in solid 5th, which is really good.

I expected Montermini to struggle with the ovals, but not that Carpentier didn't qualify. Thankfully, Adrian was there to keep the team afloat. At least this shows that the oval season will be a very long one for Ganassi.

Nice to see all three Comptech cars qualifying, disappointed to see them all retiring.
Ferrarist, if possible Comptech Racing would like to expand to a full season entry.

Sure. While this brings the full-time grid to over 40 cars, we'll probably see some dramatic qualifying throughout the season.

I expected that Cheever might have failed to qualify but to see only one Team Menard car in the race was disappointing. At least Arie made it to the finish in 4th place one lap down. I consider a 4th place a successful run given that he started 24th and pretty much had to have been lapped early in the race trying to charge up the running order.

Before I'll post the results of the first training session at Homestead-Miami Speedway, here are the maximum numbers of cars that can qualify on each type of track:

1-mile oval: 26 cars
1.25-mile oval: 28 cars
1.5-mile oval: 30 cars
2-mile oval: 34 cars
2.5-mile oval: 38 cars (Except for the traditional 33-car grid at Indianapolis)

So 30 cars will take the green flag at Homestead.

As for qualifying: In order to make it more "fair", qualifying will be split into two sessions. Half of the entries will qualify on the first session (41/2 = 20,5 ~ 21 entries). The 20 entries that didn't qualify will fight for the remaining grid spots on the second qualifying session. With that being said, here's the first qualifying session. Remember, qualifying will consist of 12 laps only, which can distort the strength ratio of the grid a bit.

Nine cars will qualify their was into field at the second session of qualifying. But like at the Indianapolis 500, drivers who qualified on the second session of qualifying will start behind those who did so in the first session, regardless of speed.

Yes! The Cuate is making noise. A great 2nd place for Adrian and the Tecate-Quaker. Shame that Montermini was the first to bail out. And Carpentier really need to improve.

Winner and 7th, the mystery is why is Eddie slower than Parker Johnstone and Franck Freon? If I knew this, I'd have hired Hiro Matsushita.

Roger Penske wrote:The new car isn't where we would like it too be right now, but we're happy to see Kenny reach the checkered flag. Al was just unlucky losing the engine like that, we hoped he'd be stronger in the race. Unfortunately qualifying was a struggle for Dario, he'll do better on the road courses coming from Europe. Not much else to say, just we're going back to work to get better.

19 Racin Gardner (Bettenhausen Racing)                42.520
20 Dario Franchitti (Marlboro Team Penske)            43.963

Once again, Greg Moore barely misses qualification for a race. Dario Franchitti also continues his abysmal performance for Penske. Maybe the jump from F3 (With a year of DTM inbetween) to IndyCar was too much for him?

34 Kenny Bräck (Marlboro Team Penske)                 42.063 (160.474 mph)

Note how Marlboro Team Penske has the fastest AND slowest qualified car on the grid. In fact, they also had the slowest overall car in the qualifying session.

I'm actually surprised that there were relatively few retirements. Then again, the "oval" at Jacarepagua isn't really an oval in the traditional sense of the word. The average lap time was also rather high for an oval, which also contributed to the outcome.
Emmo's also might quite a charge to the front, hasn't he? I guess him having Honda engines helped securing his victory of fellow Penske driver Al Unser, Jr., who only had Mercedes-Ilmor engines at his disposal.

Menard Buicks prove to be fast and fragile like usual. If the cars make the Indy 500, they won't last and if they do, it's more like Scott Goodyear's run today where he goes a lap down. Certainly fast until they fail.

The Cuate is leaving his mark. Having a good car, Adrian Fernandez can show what he's made of. On the other side, Carpentier continues to dissapoint, and Montermini is still learning how to race in ovals.

Positively surprised with my drivers so far. Suzuki is new to ovals, but he has done pretty well. Fangio II's 7th place was very pleasing.

Indianapolis 500 is a great event and therefore the team announces that it will field 3rd driver for Indianapolis 500. The negotiations are currently ongoing, and we will reveal the results soon. It will be important to be in the greatest race of the season with full line-up. The extra driver will not take part further rounds.

Well, its nice to see we've managed to get past our "ace practice, flunk qualifying" mentality. Still, better reliability wouldn't go amiss
