1986
Nelson Piquet finally won the title after a very close fought season between himself, Prost and Mansell. Mansell's Adelaide woes meant that even if Prost won, Piquet could still win by finishing 2nd, so Williams' decision to bring him in for tyres wasn't such a big risk in this version of events. Elsewhere in the field René Arnoux starts his Ligier career by finishing 5th in the standings and Jonathan Palmer achieves 10th driving for Zakspeed! On a side note I didn't take Rothengatter's results into account when calculating Zakspeed's points as I think he was ineligible for points, similar to Berger and Gartner in 1984 (unless there's somebody in the audience who can prove otherwise).

1987
This year saw more giant-killing performances by a reject driver. This time it was Pascal Fabre who was in a battle for 6th in the championship with Jonathan Palmer and even kept AGS ahead of Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship! Unfortunately for Pascal Osella and Larrousse were entering second cars from Monza onwards, meaning less guaranteed grid spots. He struggled to qualify for the next few races and was sacked after Mexico. Going into the final race Senna was the only man who could stop Piquet from winning back-to-back titles. Piquet only needed to make it past half-distance to win the title and did so. To rub salt in the wound for Ayrton, he was disqualified after a fine drive to 2nd for illegal brake ducts. In the Jim Clark and Colin Chapman Trophies (yes I did those too!) the only change is March finishing ahead of AGS.
