So, after a pretty uneventful drive through the UK (save the M25 being traffic hell as usual), I made my way through France to Lille, my first planned stopping point. I had to pass through Dunkirk, which had... residual Nazis... possibly zombified... somehow...

Luckily, them being zombified, I was able to evade them easily and wind up at my intended destination.

Start Point: Edinburgh, UK
End Point: Lille, France
Countries Visited: 2 (UK, France)

(In case this first leg didn't make it obvious: this is not going to be the most serious entry. :P )

Shadaza, as you didn't mention in which time zone you counted 'midnight', i took my own time zone. So here's my leg 2:
Image

Obviously i start where i ended yesterday, the city centre of Kortrijk. I will travel direction Antwerp, Eindhoven, then put on the song 'Autobahn' from Kraftwerk as i travel trough Germany (and that song lasts for almost 10 hours, anyway  ), then i will invade Poland, and rest in the city of Wroclaw.

Start Point: Kortrijk, Belgium
End Point: Wroclaw, Poland
Countries Visited: 6: UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Poland

This is actually kind of fun!
I don't know what i want and i want it now!

After being hit by all the roadworks in the world down the Autobahns in Southern Germany, we finally reached our day 2 stopover at the Falksensteiner Hotel and Spa Lamm Kastelruth in Northern Italy 5 minutes over time. Which means that after discussing this with Shadaza, our limit for stage 3 will be 9:55, rather than 10 for everyone else.

Start: Hotel Flandre Angleterre, Lille, France
Finish: Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa Lamm Kastelruth, Kastelruth, Italy
Countries: 7 - (UK, France), Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Italy

First Pasta The Winning Post - Leg 2

Start: Lille, France
Finish: Gniezno, Poland
Countries: 6 - (UK, France) Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Poland

Setting off from Lille, we manage to repel the attraction of visiting European Micro-States, travelling through north Belgium and passing through the Netherlands into Germany. From there, it's Deutschland, Deutschland über alles as we cross Germany to arrive in Poland, to the suspicion of the locals. The road leads us to the town of Gniezno, where a hotel and continental breakfast awaits, after a leg that is both 19 minutes under the travel allowance and firmly puts us back in the race to reach Beijing.

For the third leg, we'll aim to further our advantage over This' team. :P

Shadaza, when you post the compilation map that shows all of our progress, could you tell us which symbol represents which team?

Day 1

http://goo.gl/maps/ONlC9

Newcraighall Station, Edinburgh, Scotland (it's just on the edge of Edinburgh as defined by Edinburgh City Council) > Holiday Inn, Ghent, Belgium
Countries Travelled - UK, France, Belgium
Time Taken - 10hours exactly
Distance - 916km
Notes - Confirmed with Shadaza that Edinburgh meant Edinburgh and not just Edinburgh City Centre.

Started at Newcraighall station and joined the A1, first junction, join the A720 and turn at the next junction to the exciting A68, it is very pretty lots of woodland and fields to drive through including Northumberland National Park which gets me out of Scotland and into England after 1 hour 18 minutes of driving. End of the park and I join the A696 toward Newcastle, which I hit and rejoin the A1. Near Washington it turns into the A1(M), briefly turning back into the A1 outside Darlington but soon changes back the A1(M). Between Leeds and Doncaster it turns back into the A1 but just before Doncaster it's the A1(M) agin but not for long as it turrns back into the A1 as I pass by it. Near Peterborough it turns back into the A1(M) however before Huntingdon I take the A14 but near Camridge it becomes the M11. It hits the orbital ring road the M25, driving around this, I get near the river Thames where the M25 becomes the pathetic A282 and the Dartford Tunnel, however it soon become the M25 again but not for long as I take the M20 to get me to the Eurotunnel. 7 Hours 35 minutes after I start.

Now I sit in a train, seeing the blackness of the tunnel and drinking horrible cups of tea. An hour and a minute pass and I quickly leave and join the E40, I salute as I pass Dunkirk. Getting to the Belgium border at 9hr 11 minutes, however I continue on the E40 until Ghent where I join the E17 and turn off at a holiday inn.

Day 2
http://goo.gl/maps/ZWjZc

Holiday Inn, Ghent, Belgium > Zazajd Blue Hotel, Konin, Poland
Countries Travelled - (UK, France) Belgium, Germany, Poland
Time Taken 9h 55 Minutes
Distance - 1,157km (2,073km to date)
Notes - Yes, avoided the Netherlands so I can get the minimum countries travelled.

So I leave the Inn, get back on the E17 to rejoin the E40 and just drive. I drive around Brussels still on the E40 which is also now the E19 but once I am around it is the E40 again. When I get to Liege the E40 also becomes the E42 and E25 but only for a little while. Belgium is tiny and after a mere 1 hour 44 minutes I enter Germany, I avoid the Netherlands as I want to travel to as few countries as possible. I hit Cologne and take the E31, north of Cologone the E31 splits and I join the E37. At Bergkamen I turn off to the E34, still hoping to get out of Germany and into Poland before he day is out. At Bad Oeynhausen I turn off onto the E30. South of Potsdam, the E30 is also briefly the E51 and E55 but soon is just the E30 again. 7 Hours and 50 minutes I cross the Oder river to get into Poland. However 2 hours later still driving on the E30 in what seemed the straightest road ever, I turn off on the DK25 to get to my hotel and enjoy some potato soup.

Leg 2 of my journey after stocking up on enough Belgian chocolate to last the rest of the trip, I head further east, around Brussels inevitably getting stuck in traffic before heading to Maastricht to take in a tiny part of Nederland. Then back south through Belgium again to get to Luxembourg taking advantage of their low fuel prices. Then cut through northwest France and a small part of Germany where I bypass Basel and enter car hating Switzerland. After pissing off the Swiss with a little bit of speeding I escape to my next stopover in the Austrian town of Bludenz making sure to go through Vaduz first so I can add Liechtenstein to my list.

Bruges

Brussels

Yup, leg 2 is in full swing, I just fell asleep before I could officially start it (opps)

25 Teams have begun an incredible journey from Edinburgh to Beijjing China. Leg 1 is a pretty simple route as the number of places one can go in 10 hours is limited. This is highlighted by the fact that 13 of the teams ended the leg in Lille or the surrounding towns of the region. 9 others decided to go a little further north and move into Belgium and are scattered around the cities there whilst fakeboullier decided to press towards central France and reached Amiens. 2 teams have gone for a very different approach, dr baker and TMLW have decided to detour to visit Ireland, the former deciding to end the day in Cork with the later returning to the UK via Holyhead, Wales.

Everyone's leg 1 was fine, and so far it looks like everyones leg 2 is legit, and we can see already some are committing north or south.

Image

My route starts off in Bruges, goes up just to skirt the Netherlands, then going in back in to Belgium we decide to give Luxmbourg a flying visit, spending less than 1 minute in the country. Taking the superior German roads, we spend the bulk of the leg driving through there. We enter Austria from the North before swinging into to Eastern Switzerland and then driving through the Liechtenstein city of Schaan. We then return to Austria and head to the city of Blundez where it takes us a few minutes to park.
Total time 10:02 (It only took 10 to actually reach the city, but I will stick to 9:58 or less on the next leg regardless)
New Countries visited this leg: Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein.

We woke up in the morning and checked the map that was sent to us by the organisers of where the other teams were staying. Unsurprisingly, we were all close to each other, with some in Belgium and some in France. Only a couple of others were interestingly in Ireland and Wales. The real fun would start today. Everyone had followed the same route through the UK, but the sheer number of open motorways in Western Europe guaranteed some different strategies.

This morning, before leaving at the planned time of 10am, we planned out a general route that we would stick to all the way to Beijing, starting today. Using our knowledge of the traffic in Belgium, we hoped to gain a slight advantage, both in countries visited and in time, hoping to get a good placing in both tables. Our travels today would take us through at least four new countries. With the route planned out, as well as a shortlist of possible end stops towards the end, we headed out towards the Volkswagen and got ready to leave the hotel.

At 10am precisely, we left the hotel parking lot and turned onto the A21 autoroute, on the way to Belgium. A few minutes later, we reached the end of the A21 and turned East on the E19, towards Valenciennes and Namur. We crossed the border at 10:15am. We had already planned ahead to avoid Brussels and Liège, which are usually surrounded by traffic jams, and instead headed towards the Walloon capital of Namur, where we turned off what was now the E42 and onto the E411 towards Luxembourg. It turned into an easy ride through the Belgian countryside elong the E411, then the E25 after Neuchâteau, before we entered Luxembourg. It was just after noon.

Like every other major city, we avoided Luxembourg, then turned briefly South, still on the E25, until we reached Bettembourg, where we turned off the motorway and onto the Luxembourgish A13 towards Germany, which we entered around 1pm. The A13 became the A8, then the E29, which we followed until we reached Saarbrücken, where we turned back East onto the A8, around Saarbrücken, and onto the E50 towards Mannheim. This was where we lost major time which would prevent us from reaching our ideal destination of Vitis, Austria.

We briefly left the E50 to pass Mannheim on the E31, taking us past the Hockenheimring and on the way to Nürnberg. Despite some roadworks, almost no time was lost, and by 5:15pm, we were in the Czech Republic with about two-and-a-half hours remaining. Unable to reach Austria, we didn't regret our decision to get some Czech koruna, just in case. The motorways in the Czech Republic were surprisingly well maintained, and we could ride smoothly towards the East. We reached Plzen at 6pm, and with two hours remaining, we turned off the E50 onto the E49, South-East towards the Austrian border, which we knew we wouldn't reach today.

There was absolutely zero traffic on the E49, which was a two-lane road more than it was a motorway, and we could start to prepare our arrival. We reached Ceske Budejovice at around 7:40pm, and we could now cruise to our final destination of Trebon. At 7:55, we turned off the main road onto Taboritska and reached our chosen destination of Penzion Maxim, parking across the road and signing in at 7:57pm, with three minutes to spare. This time, there was no need for Yaël to rush inside.

I'm interested to see where everyone will be tomorrow morning.

Departing Lille, and nervously checking my mirrors for any Nazi zombies following me from Dunkirk, I quickly make my way to Paris - my reasoning being that the opulent French-ness of the most French place in the world would surely cause them to instantly combust, if they were still following me. Unfortunately, being British myself, I am also susceptible to this, a fact which I suddenly realised upon entering the city. The only counter to this that I had available was a CD containing speeches by Margaret Thatcher... *shudders* ... that the previous owner of the car (Jeremy Clarkson?) left in the glovebox.

Needless to say, I was very relieved to leave Paris, eject the CD and toss it out the window. From there, the only difficulty for the rest of France were various random strikes, and being uncomfortably close to Switzerland for a little bit. Then... I entered Italy. And everyone on the road seemed to think they were Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton in this rather interesting comic I read the other day, which inspired my current avatar, in case you were wondering (And by read, I mean I looked at it for a bit because I don't understand Spanish).

After educating the Italian drivers in how to properly drive, I end my 2nd leg in Mesero, just outside Milan, to get some well-earned rest.

Start Point: Lille, France
End Point: Mesero, Italy
Countries Visited: 3 (UK, France, Italy)

Leg 2

Start: Lens, France
End: Brixen, Italy
Countries: 7 (UK, France) Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria, Italy

Image

After starting the day in Lens we drove through Belgium and into Luxemburg (where we filled the tank & as many petrol cans as would fit in the boot). Then it was into Germany and progress was good on the autobahn until heavy roadworks near Stuttgart. Deciding to avoid Switzerland (and their speed cameras) it was into Austria and just managed to hit Italy before the day was over.

Due to a Google employee once complaining about the quality of rice he received in China, Google have been forbidden from collecting data within China. This means that you'll have to plan the route up until the border of China, record the time, then skip across the border and start from China to your destination.

True, but your leg ends the moment you attempt to cross the China border, China is a leg reset for everyone as they hit the final sprint. You will not need a hotel for that stop, rough it in the car for one night or camp just outside or something. (not that I would recommend doing that for real at the Chinese border!)

Alright leg 2, which I had planned straight after I'd done leg 1, and it seems a couple of others have had almost exactly the same idea as me!

https://goo.gl/maps/0nO7e

So from Orchies in northern France, I've swung north into Belgium, then through Luxembourg, back into France, hopping over into Germany, down the E35 into Switzerland, round Zurich and east to Lichtenstein, before making some decent progress into Austria and the town of Telfs.

So in summary, Orchies (France) - Telfs (Austria) in 9 hours 51 mins, a distance of 615 miles. (Total: 1195 miles)
And countries visited so far: 8 - UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria.

Start: Douai, France
Finish: Hotel Norbert Rudigier, Roppen, Austria
Countries Visited: (UK, France), Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria
http://gyazo.com/2c2281cbacfcfc722530b40daf8cd5e2

From Douai, crossing the border into Belgium, travelling via Charleroi Bypass towards Luxembourg. Back into France, skirting the German border all the way down the East of France (via Colmar! Yay! Go SR Colmar!), then turning off at Mulhouse to make a very short run through the most south-westerly point of Germany, before entering Switzerland through Basel. Then, taking the Zurich Bypass, driving through Vaduz and making it into Austria. The target was to reach Innsbruck within the 10 hours, but falling short, and with no major towns between the border and Innsbruck, Team Internazionale are lucky to stumble upon Hotel Norther Rudigier in the small town of Roppen.

Leg 3 is now open, for those that missed leg 2, don't worry, you can use one of your 3 rest days to get a 20 hour leg in.

Leg 2 summary, things were expected to spread and already there seems to be a north south divide. 4 teams decided to blaze across Germany and then into Poland. A couple more went a similar route but headed south for Czech Republic. 2 went through France straight to Italy. But the majority of teams went Austria bound, with 11 teams in and around Austria, a few having made it through to Italy, whilst others taking a more scenic route to get in loads of countries. The country visit leader board now stands at 9, with a few teams having visited all of Benelux and Germanic nations by the end of the 2nd leg.

Here is my leg 3

Image

My route goes from the hotel in Bludenz through North Italy, Slovenia and into Croatia, I briefly visit Bosnia Herzegovina before returning to Croatia and finishing my leg in hotel Dakavoo, already noticing that hotels are getting a little more thinly spread.

Leg 3 is fairly predictable from me, from Telfs in Austria, I head via Innsbruck, turning south into Italy, before back into Austria, then Slovenia, round Ljubljana, into Croatia and I'm able to squeeze enough out to make Belgrade in Serbia!

https://goo.gl/maps/XUhF8

Telfs (Austria) - Belgrade (Serbia) in 9 hours 56 mins, a distance of 581 miles. (Total: 1676 miles)
Countries visited so far: 12 - UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia.
