Grand Prix Rejects

If Mercedes finish 1-2 tomorrow, then they will break the record for the most consecutive 1-2 finishes for a team in F1 history. The record is currently 5, joint shared by Ferrari (1952 and 2002) and Mercedes (2014-). Otherwise expect those two to take each other out and Vettel or one of the Williams to win!

Do you remember any of the examples in the article? Lauda only finished about 3 races in 1985 including the win at Zandvoort, Hill only scored 1 podium all year in '97 and Villeneuve managed just two top 3 finishes in 1998.

Brabham's poor 1961 defence and Schumacher's fall in 2005 where included

This is only the sixth time a race has ended under safety car, and the second in Canada.

This results, also, ends the 20 wins streak of Germany as driver or team.

2014 Canadian Grand Prix was the first race that none of the 2010 entrant teams had a classified finish. There weren't any 2010 entrant teams at the finish of the 2010 Monaco Grand Prix, but Chandhok and Trulli's crash was late enough that both were classified.

It was also the first double DNF for Marussia, and first for the Marussia/Virgin/Manor team since Korea 2010

Also, Marussia had first first-lap-double-DNF for single team since Toro Rosso at Spanish GP 2009.

True, true. Although there were instances like China 2013 where he failed to pull off alternative strategies or capitalise upon others' mistakes.

It's something he will need to prove he can do sometime, to really get ranked alongside peers like Alonso and Raikkonen who have capitalised incredibly well from lesser grid positions.

Austria 2014 represents Williams' highest points score in a single race under the 2010- system. They grossed 27 points today while in Catalunya 2012, they only bagged 25 from Maldonado's win. If the current points system extended back to much older races, then I believe this would be Williams' best score since Monaco 2005.

Also, it was the first Brazilian to be in the pole position in almost 5 years. The last was Barrichello in the Brazilian GP of 2009 season.

As I already mentioned in the IIDOTR thread (but was unsure), neither Caterham nor Marussia had a driver running last at any point of the Austrian Grand Prix. Grosjean was in last place for one lap (after starting from the pit lane). Vettel then dropped to last place, which went to Gutiérrez after his retirement. He finished just three tenths behind Ericsson. I checked this from F1 Fanatic.

I'm sure this has never happened before, as Caterham and Marussia (as well as the late HRT) have rarely even beaten anyone to the finish.

How many races did a driver lead the WDC from 1950 till 2013?

I counted it with looking at the standings after every race and got some predictable, but also some funny results.

For example: I never knew John Surtees only led one race and that one was at the right moment: after the last race in 1964, James Hunt did the same in 1976.

Michael Schumacher was 121 times the leader after the chequered flag dropped and more than 50 other drivers ever saw themselves on top of the championship one or more times.

Well, I think the point was that with such a long career and all his years as Ferrari, you'd expect Rubens to have led the championship at least once...

Yes, but as Schumacher's team-mate...even if he could lead it, he wouldn't have been allowed to.

His best chance was probably with Brawn but were he here now he'd probably argue that they favoured Button. Which they probably did being as he was quicker.

The best chance would have been winning the opening race of the season when Schumacher hits problems. Which happened to Irvine in 1999. Well he led the table on three occasions: AUS-BRA, GER-HUN and MAL.

While leading the championship is for the chosen few, being a contender for the title is for everyone. So here is a list, after how many GPs have drivers had a theoretical shot at the title - meaning there was still enough points available to close the gap with current leader.

Its the second GP in-a-row that the race leader of British Grand Prix retires due a gearbox problem.

Had he finished Rosberg would have equaled Alonso in 2006 and Vettel in 2011 for consecutive podiums from the start of the season (9)
