ATS would like to accept BMW's offer. Although we will miss our nice yellow colour scheme the success that BMW money can offer is too tempting to ignore. Yep, we're officially selling out.

As we will soon be rich let's have a weight & drag reduction for the next race

Round 14 - Italian Grand Prix, Monza, 9th September 1984

Qualifying Results:
It was a red-white-and-green front row in Italy, which delighted the enourmous crowd who bayed for the sound of a turbocharger, as long as it was attached to an engine with more than four cylinders. De Angelis' brilliant time was almost matched by rookie Pierluigi Martini, who appeared to posses the rare talent of being able to convert his local support into pure speed. Even more a surprise, though, was homeboy Piercarlo Ghinzani in his Alfa-powered Osella, qualifying fourth. Not the quickest of the Ferraris, Prost put in a respectable time, although the squad's third car - driven by Didier Pironi - was stuck down in twenty-first. Another surprise was the Williams team, who's cars would both start the Grand Prix in the top-eight. ATS, who will become the official BMW team next season, were reasonably competitive, with Johansson again qualifying in the top ten. The Lotus' and Tyrells, in particular, were nowhere near the sharp-end of the grid; Warwick and team-mate Cheever had regularly threatened pole throughout the season, but could do no better than sixteenth and eighteenth, respectively.

Race Results:
It may not have been a popular result, but it was certainly a magnificient drive from Piquet, who - if on any ocassion had proven he was worthy of the championship - had done so today. To the dismay of the Italian crowd, de Angelis had been passed by the McLarens, and demoted to a still-respectable third place by Arnoux and Piquet. Worse still, both the Alfas couldn't stand the heat, and Pironi in his Ferrari - perhaps not feeling particularly welcome in Italy - spun-off on lap eleven. There was some consolation, though, as the erractic, young Alessandro Nannini drove his BMW-powered Arrows home to a season-best fourth-place. It may have taken most of the season to develop, but Williams proved that - combined with the V6 Porsche - it was now a reliable and quick car, given the right circumstances.

Normal32 wrote:Actually, a quick question - will it possible to keep 1984 cars into 1985?
I had considered this a while ago, but decided to hold-off on adding this feature, due to fear of over-complicating the series. However, since it has been requested, I will introduce it. The information below is also available at the start of the thread, below the calendar:

Re-use of Previous Season's Chassis
Re-use of your 1984 car is legal for 1985.

Using a legacy chassis will result in an automatic halving of its performance ratings (with the exception of weight), and performance improvability. For example:

VeryGoodExampleChassis:

Code: Select all

Downforce: 71%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 36%, which can be improved to 50%.
Drag: 49%, which can be improved to 0% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 98%, which can be improved to 50%.
Mechanical Grip: 95%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 48%, which can be improved to 50%.
Weight: 548kg, which can be improved to the minimum legal weight limit (of 540kg) > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 548kg (unchanged), which can be improved to 544kg (half of the maximum potential weight reduction).
Reliability: 66%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 33%, which can be improved to 50%.
If the above car were to be re-used (without any further development) in 1986, it would look like this:

Code: Select all

Downforce: 36%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 18%, which can be improved to 25%.
Drag: 98%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 196%, which can be improved to 75%.
Mechanical Grip: 48%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 24%, which can be improved to 25%.
Weight: 548kg, which can be improved to 544kg > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 548kg (unchanged), which can be improved to 546kg (half of the maximum potential weight reduction from the previous season).
Reliability: 33%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 17%, which can be improved to 25%.

NotVeryGoodExampleChassis:

Code: Select all

Downforce: 34%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 17%, which can be improved to 50%.
Drag: 80%, which can be improved to 0% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 160%, which can be improved to 50%.
Mechanical Grip: 19%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 10%, which can be improved to 50%.
Weight: 588kg, which can be improved to the minimum legal weight limit (of 540kg) > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 588kg (unchanged), which can be improved to 564kg (half of the maximum potential weight reduction).
Reliability: 26%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 13%, which can be improved to 50%.
If the above car were to be re-used (without any further development) in 1986, it would look like this:

Code: Select all

Downforce: 17%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 9%, which can be improved to 25%.
Drag: 160%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 320%, which can be improved to 75%.
Mechanical Grip: 10%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 5%, which can be improved to 25%.
Weight: 588kg, which can be improved to 564kg > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 588kg (unchanged), which can be improved to 576kg (half of the maximum potential weight reduction from the previous season).
Reliability: 13%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 7%, which can be improved to 25%.

In the event that a legacy car is legally underweight, ballast will automatically be added in such a way that it has an entirely neutral effect on the chassis (other than its weight).

Note that values which exceed the normally-defined bounds (legacy chassis drag values can go over 100%, whereas a new chassis - no matter how under-developed - will never have more than 100% drag) will be adhered to, in terms of both on-track performance, and improvability.

Where division results in a floating-point number, this amount will be rounded-up to the nearest integer.

@Normal32 - I suspect you may want to know the answer to the question - "Is it better to design a new car with 0 D&T invested in it, or keep my old one?" To which I must reply that I cannot answer that question; as in real-life, a team only knows how quick their car is, until it's designed, built, and on the track for the first time! ;)

Round 15 - New York Grand Prix, Flushing Meadows, 7th October 1984

Qualifying Results:
In a (very) hastely-organized Grand Prix weekend, a clever piece of business opportunity from Bernie Ecclestone saw the race act partially as a marketing event for the US release of film 'Conan the Destroyer'. Everyone was a bit surprised at just how quick the F1 turbos could fly around the park, and this resulted in some rather brief lap-times. Martini made another surprise super-lap, aided in part by the frequent mechanical grip improvements to the car by the Alfa team. Prost went out and did an excellent job with little thanks from the crowd - regardless of which circuit he was at - as usual. Great performance from freshman Martin Brundle, who's team-mate suffered a puncture from the track. Piquet may only have been four places behind his team-mate, but this was now the penultimate race of the season, and every opportunity to score over Arnoux would matter. Cheever was swarmed with media requests for his opinion on the circuit, and after qualifying only eleventh due to damaging his right-hand tyres on the rough surface, very nearly gave it to them. Tambay, just behind his team-mate, was the last of the sub-minute qualifiers, in eighth place. With power not such a key factor in amongst the, rather square, corners on the circuit, the Toleman chassis had a chance to shine, and both cars were in the top twenty. Conversely, the Renault team were nowhere, as where the Arrows outfit; both teams at risk of failing to qualify.

Race Results:
The inaugural New York Grand Prix appears, in fact, to be the only one that will take place. A rather processional race was livened-up by everyone's near-constant anticipation of who would be next to retire from a tyre with a hole in it. Barely an eyelid was batted when Ghinzani and Warwick disappeared from the timesheets, but it wasn't until de Angelis retired from seventh place with his wheel askew from his tyre bursting, that people began to realize the scope of the problem with the track's surface. Goodyear-shod cars would take the brunt of the race's retirements, and with understandable reason - the company simply ran out of replacement tyres for their teams to make pit-stops with.

Amongst the earlier retirements, Arnoux spun-off outside The Queens Museum of Art when he swerved to avoid Nannini's Arrows, who had pulled-off the racing line with a flat front right tyre. Martini and Prost were the other front runners who fell foul of the circuit's bizarre sharp edges and bumps. In the end, Piquet moved-up through the order, eventually passing Brundle, to win the championship! A great result for Lotus; with only one race to go, the team are only a point-off off Brabham's second place in the Constructor's Championship. Cheever was content-enough with a solid finish at what had been a third 'home' race for him. Little strain was placed on even the most unreliable of the turbocharged engines when speeding down Grand Central Parkway, and both the Brabhams finished in the points. Pironi wasn't comfortable at all on the awkward surface and in the glitzy atmosphere, and he made little progress from his starting position.

On the evening after the race, the FIA issued a press release to the media stating that Formula One would not be returning to New York City for a future Grand Prix.

Special Event - Alfa Romeo
After outsourcing the running of the 'Alfa Romeo' works team to ex-F3 outfit 'Euroracing' in recent years, Alfa has allowed the team to use the marque's prestigious name without payment, due to Euroracing's formerly precarious financial position, since Alfa do not provide hard-currrency manufacturer support to the outfit. This understanding continued throughout 1983 and 1984.

However, with Alfa Romeo Autombiles S.p.A. facing serious financial hardship as the decade progresses, and seeing the Euroracing team's stable monetary position, the manufacturer now feels it is fair to request payment for the use of the 'Alfa Romeo Formula One team' rights and branding in 1985.

Taking into account the soon-to-be-received final payment of FOCA TV money to the team, Alfa request a payment of £3,500,000 for the legal allowance of the Euroracing team to call itself 'Alfa Romeo'.

* Pay. The Alfa Romeo team will continue to call itself such. The team will continue to be priority of the Alfa Romeo works engine project.
* Refuse to pay. The 'Alfa Romeo team' will lose the rights to call themselves such, and will revert to the name of the actual team – 'Euroracing'. As a result of this, Alfa Romeo will stop their works engine development programme, and will consider Euroracing a 'lowest priority' customer should they wish to purchase units from the remaining engine pool in the future.

The Alfa Romeo team are requested to respond to this event.

I don't see Tyrrell pulling a final race miracle, so Ferrari will spend all D&T on the 1985 car.

Also, if Euroracing choose to part company with Alfa Romeo as a works supplier, Minardi would like to open negotiations to become the new Alfa Romeo works team as of 1985, provided that our upcoming challenger meets their desired standard.

Hey, if you don't ask you don't get.

This may also be one of those times when you do ask, but still don't get.

EDIT:

I would like to run two Tests please:

Firstly, I would like to run a DRIVER SHOOT OUT. The six drivers involved will be:
  1. Our very own Andrea de Cesaris
  2. Beppe Gabbiani
  3. Corrado Fabi
  4. Fulvio Ballabio
  5. Aldo Bertuzzi
  6. Emanuele Pirro

Secondly, I would like to expand the team to run two drivers. The second driver will be the fastest of the drivers at the shoot-out, de Cesaris aside.

It would have been a possibility - that I was mulling-over how to implement fairly - but we have our answer, now...

Ohhh~, it's not often a post is insulated by atmosphere, but I can feel the tension and strain in this response ;). You had a tough decision to make, and you made it.

Your interest in the series warms my heart~. You are fourth in the queue, stood patiently behind CarloSpace, Reject_Dom, and our old friend, peteroli34.

Osella might as well at least try to get the full manufacturer support from Alfa Romeo next season. Keep in mind that unlike Minardi we have scored a point ;)
