I've got a funny feeling that there was a race in the '50s or '60s with only four or five classified finishers, but without looking it up, in the meantime, I'll say the 2005 US GP with 6.

Of course, only two cars took the chequered flag at Monaco in 1996, with HHF pulling into the pits on the final lap, but there were 7 classified finishers (which included Salo, Hakkinen and Irvine who all crashed into each other nose-to-tail at the hairpin). But I was assuming the question refers to classified finishers, rather than those still running at the end. (Edit: 3 runners, with HHF being 4th and retiring to the pits).

OK, is it the 1982 International Gold Cup at Oulton Park, the first round of that year's British F1 series? According to Wikipedia ( the 1982 series page), 5 starters, 2 retirements, 1 non-classified, 2 finishers.

Actually, I think Baker has the right answer, as it had less classified finishers than the one you told me about, and the same number of overall finishers

Jim Hall of Chaparral fame, Jim Clark, who drove a Vollstedt Indycar with wings at Riverside and said that it had "had driven faster than was thought capable by a mortal man" and then in the Tasman Series in the winter, persuaded one of his mechanics to build him one from a helicopter rotor and my final answer would be Bruce McLaren who did experiment with this a little bit before 1968.

You've got two of them (Hall and Clark), but McLaren isn't the third. You get to ask the question later on, but I'm interested to see who can get the third.

That's correct! He later became a powertrain engineer for Porsche and Ferrari, where he inspired Mauro Forghieri to mount wings on the F1 cars around the same time as other teams were developing their own.
