Grand Prix Rejects

I'm not sure which GP it is (I think it's one of the German ones), but I think the why is because the person who finished second was racing in an F2 car, and therefore ineligible for points.

Either that, or the other possibility was that the car which finished in 2nd place had been shared between two drivers (originally the points would be split between the drivers, although later they decided not to award any points at all - see the 1958 Italian GP, where the 4th placed entrant, shared between Masten Gregory and Carroll Shelby, was not awarded any points).

That's definitely one, there are 2 others that a lot of people could know off the top of their heads, the other 2 are a bit more obscure.

1. In late 1997, Alain Prost claimed to have signed which two drivers for 1998?
2. In 1999, Tom Walkinshaw made it clear that he wanted to retain Pedro de la Rosa, and sign which CART star?
3. The French GP organizers of 2005 came up with an 'innovative method' to sell tickets. What was this method?

Yes, I am indeed referring to the very same 1959 Le Mans winning driver (with team mate Roy Salvadori) and high performance automotive engineer. Shelby did drive in Formula 1, and on more than one occasion - he drove privately entered Maserati 250F's on four occasions in 1958, three times for Scuderia Centro Sud (who entered, on and off, various races between 1956 and 1965) and once backed by Temple Buell.

The main reason, though, why I knew that Shelby had driven in Formula 1 is because he also drove in 1959 for the Aston Martin Formula 1 team - as a little while ago, I had a go at writing a new article for the teams archive about Aston Martin, since their attempt to enter Formula 1 was rejectful (two 6th places, but under the points system of the time, that meant that they scored nothing).
Now, because Shelby was signed up to drive the DBR1 at Le Mans that year, Aston Martin asked him if he would driver their Formula 1 car, which he agreed to, alongside Tritignant (also signed up for Le Mans).

Brundle and Bellof yes, I am counting them. They were disqualified long after the race though!

Kubica and Campos are also correct.

Walker was disqualified in his 2nd race, so no.

Revson was technically disqualified in his first race, but not in his first entry (he had one DNQ before this), so I did not count him. Sorry for not making that clear.

So to clarity, we are still missing one driver.

I'm assuming Camel's up there as well, a couple of wins with Lotus in 1987, lots of wins with Williams in 91-93 as well as a couple with Benetton at that time.

Eppie Wietzes! His debut (and disqualification) came at the 1967 Canadian GP. The same race where Al Pease finished the race 43 laps down. I have no idea why Wietzes was DSQ'ed.

After doing a bit of research, I found out these results:

Marlboro - 211
West - 46
Mild Seven - 39
John Player Special - 33
Rothmans - 32

Marlboro is helped out by the dominance eras of McLaren and Ferrari. No contest for them. West is mainly helped out by McLaren. Mild Seven is helped by Benetton and Renault. John Player Special and Rothmans are very obvious, but if you didn't know, they were Lotus and Williams respectively.

I'm going to assume that the driver in question is South American (or more specifically Brazilian) so I'm guessing it's either Dario Franchitti, Helio Castroneves or Gil De Ferran

1982 is the season with the most debut winners, at 5. Riccardo Patrese won the Monaco Grand Prix, Patrick Tambay won the German Grand Prix, Elio de Angelis won the Austrian Grand Prix, Keke Rosberg won the Swiss Grand Prix, and Michele Alboreto won the Car Park Grand Prix.

I believe that would have been the 1983 Brazilian Grand prix - Keke Rosberg finished 2nd, got disqualified for some pit incident to do with the fire, but the drivers who finished behind him never got moved up for some odd reason........

Oh and one of Prost's claimed signings for 1998 was Damon Hill wasn't it? (No idea on the other one though).

It appears that he wasn't the only car disqualified either - Elio De Angelis was disqualified because he qualified in his turbo charged car, but switched to the normally aspirated car for the race itself.
