No, no, no, everyone knows the best pairing would be Perry McCarthy and HWNSNBM driving the Life equipped with the W12 engine. They would win every race and make Michael Schumacher in his heyday look slower than an F3 car. :P

Does anyone know how much horsepower the Life engine actually made? Wasn't it under 400?

375 HP, I think. I've seen this number in several sources (though Stats F1 says it had 650 HP...). In other words, as much as the engines Alfa Romeo and Ferrari used in 1950 and 1951.

375 HP, I think. I've seen this number in several sources (though Stats F1 says it had 650 HP...). In other words, as much as the engines Alfa Romeo and Ferrari used in 1950 and 1951.

The Alfa 159 is quoted as producing around 420bhp in 1951 (the 158 produced closer to 350bhp in 1950), whilst Ferrari were producing about 350bhp with their 375. Of course, there was the BRM Type 15, which famously was powered by a 1.5l supercharged V16, producing about 525bhp at 10,500rpm in 1950 (later variants, as used in Formula Libre events, were producing around 600bhp - a figure that would have made the engine competitive in terms of power output as late as 1982).
That said, that much power in the cars of that time must have been tricky - especially in the BRM, where the power output was very peaky (Moss once tested it, and described it as the worst car he ever drove), and even in modern classic car events, the engine is extremely unreliable (at the 2008 Goodwood Revival, one of the few remaining surviving Type 15's first overheated, and then caught fire, due to mechanical problems). http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/72/B ... -V16-.html

So, even by 1950 standards, the Life W12 might be considered a bit underpowered in comparison to the supercharged engines of the time (although on par with the normally aspirated 4.5l engines), if the figure of 375bhp is true.

As to whether the Life W12 really did produce just 375bhp, well, it is not inconceivable - the Life L190 was, after all, about 40mph slower then the next slowest entrant at Hockenheim, and on the old configuration track a shortage of power made itself all too readily apparent. http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/06/29/l ... -of-speed/
Similarly, the average lap speed of the L190 around Hockenheim was 187.2kph - the next slowest entry, for Eurobrun, had an average lap speed of 220.8kph, and at the front of the grid, Ayrton Senna's average lap speed in qualifying was 244.4kph. Giacomelli was said to have been terrified that somebody might plough into the back of him, given the huge difference in closing speed, and that shows you why.

Davide Valsecchi looks to continue the tradition of the GP2 Asia champion joining Formula 1 the subsequent year after his title, following Grosjean and Kobayashi.

Prospects against Klien, de la Rosa, Senna etc?

Wow, I never imagined the BRM V16 was that powerful. But seriously, how come did FIA allow Life to compete if the engine was THAT underpowered? Well, maybe for the same reason that they let Dallara use a F3000 chassis for the 1988 Brazilian GP, actually :?

Well, the V16 shared a lot of technology with aviation engines from the time - Rolls Royce's aerospace division were given the contract to design the supercharger, which was derived from the ones used on the last generation of the Merlin V12 aviation engine. On top of that, at the time the fuel would probably have been aviation grade (due to the higher energy density), so in may ways the engine was almost more like a downsized aviation engine instead of a automotive engine. Technically, it was a very ambitious and unusual design - in some ways it was very ahead of its time, but in others the shortage of funding and materials in post war Europe did make their presence felt.

As to why the FIA allowed Life to compete in the first place, well, I can only guess that they were not expecting the engine to be so underpowered, or the chassis to be so overweight as to compound the problem.

I suppose that he might as well return to Mclaren - with the time that he has spent there as a test driver, it virtually is a second home to him, and at least he would maintain some sort of link to Formula 1. Besides, unless he can get his hands on a substantial amount of sponsorship, he is unlikely to be offered a seat elsewhere as a main driver, and there do not appear to be any major changes to the reserve drivers this year.

Continuing with the theme of drivers looking for work, Hulkenberg has had an interview with formula1.com, where he accepts that his best chance of remaining on the grid for 2011 would be with Force India, although, with several other drivers talking to Force India, whether he is likely to succeed is another matter. He's also fairly neutral about his exit from Williams too, accepting that his pole lap in Brazil, whilst a highlight of his season, wasn't going to save his seat in itself:
Q: Were you hoping that your Brazilian pole would help you keep your Williams seat?
NH: Of course. This Brazilian pole position was something that Williams had not tasted in years, but then again, one lap does not change the course of history.

You do have to remember that Bore-rain is the first race of the season, and races there are always less exciting than watching paint dry. It might as well be reffered to as an extended test session with world championship points on offer.
