That's true of most teams. But I think if, say, Senna were still going about this time, and he wanted to return to McLaren, I'm sure Ron Dennis would've been willing to at least consider it. Same for Dagnall; it was hardly an acrimonious parting between them, and Dagnall is as good now as he ever was. Hell, I'd say he's even better now than he was driving for McLaren before; winning for Lotus in their death throes, finishing 4th in a Pacific of all things, and winning 4 races in a Jordan that shouldn't be anywhere near that competitive.

Hell yes, the 1996 Jordan was a minor points car that could have got the odd podium, but that's it.

Time to know what happened in the last 3 races of 1996

ROUND 14 - ITALIAN GP - Monza

Before the Grand Prix, I had told Eddie Jordan that I wouldn't continue with the team in 1997. He seemed quite disappointed with the news, but at the same time he said he understood my choice and we wished mutual success in the future and to finish the season scoring as good results as possible. Later on, on Friday evening at the track, I had a meeting with my agent, Frank Williams and Bernard Dudot to sign a contract for the 1997 & 1998 seasons, with an option to continue into 1999. Jacques Villeneuve to be my teammate.

Qualifying

No chance against the Renault-powered engines, but still made the most of the car




Race

I did an excellent start and placed 2nd behind Berger at the first corner. Berger was outrageously fast, and I could barely hold the Williams behind, by the end of lap one Berger was 1.9 ahead, by Lap 5, 9.7, and 5 laps later, 17.3; so I concentrated on keeping Damon Hill behind. Damon tried a really stupid pass at Parabolica on the outside, he stepped into the gravel trap and spun out of the race, so Villeneuve was already trying to pass me on the next straight, but on lap 11, coming into the 2nd chicane, he just tried again to pass me on the outside, I just opened a bit to take the chicane and to avoid contact he stepped a wheel on the crass and crashed out of the race... Both Williams drivers out in barely 30 seconds! Next lap Barrichello retired and Berger was still faster than me, but by lap 15 his advantage was growing slower. I had enough pace to be 2nd comfortably but the transmission went on lap 18 and that was the end of the race and any championship hope. Berger kept on leading but he retired with two laps to go! (Real Germany 1996 anyone????) and Eddie Irvine, on a better strategy than Schumacher, took the lead and won his first Grand Prix and took an incredible 1-2 for Ferrari at Monza!!

1996 - ROUND 15 - PORTUGAL - Estoril

Qualifying

Excellent; Another Pole!!!




Race

I kept the lead at the first corner but I slid slightly off the track later on, losing position to Schumacher and Hill, however, I retook 2nd from Hill before the end of the 1st lap... by passing him outside the last corner! I would pass Schumacher on lap 4, but Hill took the lead again on lap 7; we were keeping a good battle and I passed him on lap 8 and started to pull a gap from there, which was 6.1 secs at the end of lap 15; Hill was going for 3 stops and he stopped really soon, leaving Schumacher 2nd. However, I was faster than the Ferrari and by lap 25 my advantage was over 26 secs! Everything was going according to plan and my 2nd stint was even better as in the space of 3 laps Schumacher and Hill cars expired and I found myself with a gap over one minute by lap 45, over Villeneuve, going for my 2nd stop on lap 49... only to suffer a puncture at the rear left wheel seconds after leaving the pitlane. It was a miracle that I could keep my car on the track for a whole lap, but when I reached the pits to replace the tyre I had already been passed by Villeneuve and Alesi and I went back into the track in 4th place, behind Hakkinen, who was 22.5 secs ahead on lap 51. I started to push as hard as I could. Alesi spun on lap 54, meaning he was now the driver ahead of me, passing him on lap 58 and Hakkinen on lap 60. With 11 laps to go I was 19.4 behind Villeneuve, then 13.1 by lap 66 and 9.8 by lap 68, but I would have needed an extra 3 laps and I ended up in 2nd place.




DOTR -- Chris Dagnall; did not win because of a stupid puncture, but dominated all the way through until that point.
ROTR -- Martin Brundle; ended between Minardi drivers... seriously?

1996 - ROUND 16 - JAPANESE GP - Suzuka

Qualifying

Wet track. Again everything went my side; Another pole!!




Race

The track was wet throughout the whole race although no rain. Once again I did a good start and I kept my lead into the first corner; the car was incredibly well balanced and not even the Williams could touch me, so I started to pull a big, big gap soon, my advantage to Hill was already 8.0 by the end of lap 5, before he was passed by Villeneuve in a thrilling battle for the championship title. Villeneuve stayed there until he stopped on lap 16, only to discover that Hill was going for one stop. My gap over Hill was over 30 secs when I stopped on lap 19 so I could keep my lead; when Hill stopped it was 28.8 to Villeneuve but I had everything under control and it eventually grew until my 2nd stop; from there on I just concentrated on driving the car home to snap yet another win, my 5th of the season for Jordan!! Hill made the most of his pit strategy to claim the 1996 title!




DOTR -- Chris Dagnall; totally dominated the weekend and scored a fantastic win.
ROTR -- Jacques Villeneuve; The wrong strategy cost him the championship.

I took the lead at the start...



and never gave it up until the finish line.

First, I want to congratulate Damon for his fantastic championship win, he deserves this title, congratulations! About the race, I want to thank Eddie, Peugeot and the whole team for giving me an incredible car today, and to Benson & Hedges and Total for their constant support; I could barely believe it when I was pulling a gap, but these races are never easy because you can make a mistake whenever you're thinking about something else, so from that point of view the race was perfect and now I'm even more determined than ever to keep racing in Formula one and will try to fight for even bigger things next season. To go to a young team, like Jordan, and scoring the first win ever for the team and then the late string of good results is amazing, I'm very happy with how the season has gone; I don't have the feeling of having lost anything, because the championship was never an option as the others were much stronger than us, specially for the first few races. So, coming here to Suzuka, and scoring the fifth is incredible, and I'm very proud of what we have achieved as a team and how things have gone. I think I have grown up professionally and personally as well, and that's all I could ask.

Tyrrell > Kenny Bräck (instead of moving to America)
Dome > Tora Takagi

I'd say a Verstappen/Salo combination is good enough for Tyrrell, as is Magnussen heading to Stewart. Have Jarno Trulli follow his destiny and debut for Minardi. Perhaps if Nakano goes to Dome, you could have Ryo Michigami driving for Prost instead or vice-versa. Maybe we could have ourselves a ridiculous Nigel Mansell-comeback somewhere down the road as well.

Really? Even though Hill's on the market, and unlike in real life, Coulthard has not held his own against Hakkinen?

How about Hill signing for McLaren, while Coulthard gets the boot, signing for Jordan.
Ralf Schumacher debuts at Minardi, Trulli gets the other Minardi seat, while Salo and Verstappen stays at Tyrrell. Dome should get a Nakano-Katayama full Japanese run. At Stewart, Barrichello's team-mate should be Magnussen.

I know, it's a little obscure, but Hill was in talks with Dennis, wasn't he? Coulthard could join EJ again, Ralf would be able to show what he's capable of at a backmarker team, and Dome would be happy with a Japanese line-up.

Also, congrats on finishing a close third in the WDC. If it wasn't for the mechanical failures, you could have been crowned.

Prost, free from having to take a Japanese driver, prefers German F3 Champion Jarno Trulli.

Rosset, yeah, but Sospiri deserved a better shot at F1 than what Lola gave him.

1997 -- ROUND 1 -- AUSTRALIAN GP -- Melbourne

Great to be back in the car! The 4th different team for me in 4 years, but I feel as happy as ever or even more as this season I have the chance to come back to the top after a string of difficult seasons. 1997 is gonna be different with different drivers fighting to win and it was evidenced by the smaller gaps between cars if you compare with previous years; although the Williams is a beast and I hope it remains as competitive as in the past few years!

Qualifying

I ended up in a fine 2nd place after one problem during my best lap on Sector 3 meant I wouldn't be able to start from the Pole.




Race

I did a bad start and fell to 5th, while Irvine made his way on the 3rd corner so I was 6th by the end of Lap 1. I could pass Frentzen on lap 2 and Villeneuve retired with a problem so I moved up to 4th, I kept a small battle with Frentzen but I regained position for good on Lap 4 and started looking towards Irvine who was 4.0 secs ahead by then. By lap 15 the gap had increased to 4.4 and Irvine entered the pits on Lap 19; I stopped a lap later to exit 6th, behind Eddie. Alesi and Hakkinen came into the pits later on and I began to approach the Ferrari; by lap 25 the gap was just under a second and I passed him on Lap 27 for 3rd, with Coulthard 5.8 ahead. Coulthard retired on lap 34 and Schumacher was too far ahead by then; Irvine crashed out of the race on lap 39 so from the 2nd stop onwards it became a matter of bringing the car to the finish line, which I did to score my first points and podium for Williams

Well, I'm busy enough musicwise!! Have a recording session mid April and we have to finish the tracks, which is a bit of a long way yet; then in May I have already been confirmed 6 dates with the other band I play at! Anyway, the NC races haven't been done yet...

Is Dagnall career going to be finished or have we seen the last of him in 1997? Really enjoyed it as it helped serve as an inspiration to my own career that I wrote. Be a shame if it was unfinished.
