Michael has been given a 10 place grid drop next time out.

I think that is about right actually. Difficult to transfer a unique incident into a quantifiable penalty so I sympathize with the stewards on this one. It was certainly dangerous enough, at that speed, so close to the wall, and so aggressive and unsafe a move that a penalty was warranted. 10 spots is a bit arbitrary but you have to draw a line (unless you're Schumacher in which case you pretend the line doesn't exist and then paint imaginary ones and base your argument around those).

Having just had a look back (on YouTube), I think this was at least as bad as the notorious Senna/Prost similar incident in 1988, & some sort of penalty is justified. I also think a 10 place drop is about right.

(Edit). Which given Michael's recent quali woes may even see him right at the back.

I really like Schumacher (and he's why I got interested in Formula One), but I was absolutely ecstatic when Rubens held that pass.

I think as well as the infinite improbability drive thread, we should have a special improbability object award given to the loose wheel given that by some miracle it didn't seriously injure anyone, and special improbability people awards to the Sauber mechanic (nice bodyswerve and while holding a wheel!) and the Williams mechanic (who by all accounts was quite stocky so, erm...., nice bodyshape)

F1 was very lucky again today.

You do realize that for any non-german, that's like saying "I really like Nazis (And they're why I got interested in World War II)"?

BTW, thats Räikkönen with two K's and two N's. Not Raikonnen (Raikkonen is fine if you have no umlauts though)

I think mentioning Nazis in a F1 forum is a bit... out of proportions, shall we say? (unless we are discussing about Mosley's habits)

I thought hemo was part-German or something like that, which also explains his avatar?

It's not really. I'm the same, as I imagine many people who got in to F1 in the late 90s/early 2000s are.

I'm siding with DonTirri on this one. I remember glimpses of watching the 1994 season live as a kid, and the one thing that sticks out in my head was my father telling me Schumacher was an ass for wrecking Hill for the championship, and Senna would have wupped his ass. I've never liked the guy. I don't care how talented he is, his underhanded tactics in and out of the car make him as intolerable to me as Alonso and Nelson Piquet. The nail in the coffin for me was Austria 2002. Unforgivable.

Schumacher will now need to qualify into top 8 to avoid getting behind one of the new teams. It might be tough job.

And this is the portion of the broadcast where I remind you all I'm half-German and there are no American drivers in Formula One again. (And Sutil is my favorite driver... now.)

I didn't start watching F1 at all until 1996, which happened to be after his first two championships. I saw underdog Schumi resurrect Ferrari.

It will be a very tough job as Ross Brawn has admitted that the W01 just simply isn't fast enough and is too flawed for it to be worth throwing money at it to rectify its problems (especially since part of the problems are with the chassis itself, and they simply cannot modify it thanks to the homologation rules). http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85836
So, with the team effectively planning to abandon the car after Singapore, and are already shifting most of their attention to next year, I'd expect the Mercedes team to start falling back fairly soon. I doubt, therefore, that Schumacher will be able to easily get into the top 10, and will probably end up behind one of the new teams, if not several of them.

Additionally, as mentioned elsewhere, it seems that Derek Warwick was, in agreement with the other stewards, prepared to disqualify Schumacher from the Hungarian GP for that move on Barrichello - it was only because there was not enough time to review all of the evidence that they deferred their decision until after the race. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85838

Just saw the Rubens-Schu move. Holy cow, if the pit wall didn't finish, they'd have crashed. I think the Williams had all 4 wheels off the white lines at a point; heaven forbid if anyone was exiting the pits at that moment...
