The first year of a university degree is great! If you're an student in England, its barely a step up from A Levels (the exams people take when they're 17-18) and whilst depending on your course there'll be coursework (essays, portfolios, the like) as well as exams normally in January and May/June, the rest of the time you're pretty much a free agent to do what the hell you like. Granted there is of course the lectures, and whilst I attended most of mine, some of the lecturers are awful so it wasn't worth turning up on some occasions. I presume all universities now provide online links to lecture material (i.e. powerpoint presentations used, links to websites, etc) so using them when you miss lectures is more than enough cover. This year after my summer exams I genuinely thought I'd failed the course, in some of my exams I wrote some utter rubbish and yet came out overall with a score of 65%, which is a 2:1, the second highest grade acheivable. And at my uni the first year's score doesn't even count towards the final grade of the degree!
In case people were wondering, I'm reading BA Geography so it's not just some fancy pancy media studies rubbish
