Grand Prix Rejects

Despite a number of worthy candidates (when Hamilton made his cock-up on lap one I actually shouted "You stupid idiot!" at the TV!), my vote goes to the Hispania team. Dreadful in practice and qualifying, Senna's car hardly able to run all weekend, and to top it off a needlessly stupid and dangerous accident on the part of the pit crew.

The German TV commentary team of RTL, Heiko Wasser and Christian Danner, for noticing the ambulance in the pitlane, not knowing and therefore not telling why it's there, and telling silly stories about what would happen if a driver entered the pitlane but could not stop in front of his garage because there's an ambulance parked right there.

May the HRT team member fully recover from this nasty accident.

Apart from that, possible nominees are McLaren (Hamilton wasting it at the 2nd chicane and Button being on what essentially proved to be the wrong setup after all), Force 1ndia (for not meeting their own expectations even) and ... unsurprisingly ... Sakon Yamamoto and his lollipop man.

Blaming Yamamoto for the incident in the pits is pure madness and anybody who says that just shows he doesn't have any knowledge of driver's behaviour during a pitstop. In this case driver is looking at one and one thing only, the board held by the lolipopman (especially considering pitstops last only 5-6 secs. these days and not 15). Nobody and I mean nobody looks in the rear view mirrors to see whether everyone is finished and he can drive away. That's lolipopman's god damn responsibility to release his driver after everyone is finished working on the car. The only thing that could go 50/50 is if the fuel hose gets stuck in the vent and the lolipopman gives the signal in conjuction with the fueller pulling the hose off, but of course now that refuelling is banned, it's out of question. Yamamoto was given the signal and it's obviously the lolipopman's fault and nobody elses.

Can I give an honorary Reject of the Race to the Pastor Maldonado's Rapax team in Gp2? His team sent him out not once, but twice with a broken right suspension after he did a Dukes Of Hazzard caliber leap over Romain Grosjean in the feature race.

They didn't even check it even though it was clear in replay that it was broken.

Talking about Hispania, running the Monaco wings on Monza is worthy of Rejectdom alone regardless of all the pit shambles

They were running the Monaco aero package?!?!?! I knew they didn't have enough money to have a Monza aero package (which is one of the more rejectful things I've seen since the nineties), but I thought they were at least using Spa's wings

Yup, Bruno Senna said their were doing some low-downforce wings testing but decided against it for safety reasons and stuck with the casual ones which they used in Monaco and just about everywhere else too. That's the main reason they can't match neither Lotus or Virgin, their aero package is simply way below par and brings back all the bad memories from 80/90s reject teams.

At the very least, I hope that somebody is keeping a good note of all this - if Super Aguri was the playful side of Rejectdom (the popular underdogs, who would always fight on, with their enthusiasm for the sport clear to all), HRT is perhaps the slightly darker side (a team being run by a money hunting boss, no real attempts to improve or to move forwards). After all, both Virgin and Lotus could afford to bring a Monza spec package (and there was an almighty scrap for honour between Glock and Kovalainen, with Glock eventually coming out on top in the end) - by comparison, I agree that HRT is remeniscent of the 80's and 90's reject teams in a bad way.

Speaking of HRT, there is some good news and some bad news about their injured mechanic. The bad news is that he is still under observation at the local hospital, having suffered from concussion and a damaged rib.
