Grand Prix Rejects

I have spent the past week on the Isle of Man (looks like I chose a good week to escape England - just hope that the rioting is ending imminantly!) and just a note to say that TT3D: Closer to the Edge will be released on DVD and 3D Blu-Ray on 28th November on the island, and presumably in UK too. (The posters in HMV said a release day of about 8th November, but the cashier said that it had been postponedfor whatever reason.)

Anyone seen 'Mask of Dust', only found out about it recently but there were a number of cameos including Stirling Moss, Reg Parnell and others.

Worst film has to be 'Driven'. But what do you expect from something written, produced and starring Sylvester Stallone? It's just awful, apart from being utter bollocks (like the bit where they drive Indycars flat out through the traffic of LA) it utterly trivialises very serious accidents. The slightest impact at any speed and cars are hurled into the air on fire and burst apart like wet cardboard. It's awful because people have died in crashes like those, but we are supposed to laugh.

How did Michel Vaillant not manage to win any GPs between the French GP of 83 (Castellet) and the French GP of 93 (Magny-Cours)? Did he race for Ligier during that time or was he in Group C?

I've got my hands on "Love the Beast" with Eric Bana.

There was no comics concentrating on F1 during that time

It was mostly Le Mans (because he obviously has to race in just about every race series at the sam time) with some truck racing (yes, truck racing) mixed in.

The latest reprints are a greyish black on the side. I know the first 13 have definitely been reprinted that way and I may have seen number 59 (La Prisonnière) like that as well.

The next-latest reptrints have an F1 car and a GT car on an orange background, Jean and Philippe Graton's biographies, a description of the series and all the other comics drawn until then by Graton. All 70 have been reprinted that way.

To be fair Stallone is an Oscar winning script writer, but yes Driven is absolute crap, made worse by the years of expectation that he might be doing something halfway decent

To be fair Stallone is an Oscar winning script writer, but yes Driven is absolute crap, made worse by the years of expectation that he might be doing something halfway decent

Stallone was nominated for a best original screenplay Oscar award, but he never actually won it. That is probably a blip in his otherwise rejectful scripting career...

Have to say though, if anyone was going to play Schumacher in a film, Sly would be the man.

i just saw Senna last night. it was beautiful.
they did kinda portray prost as a bad guy, but overall very well put together, i personally dig the music for the '84 monaco scene!
it also wasn't as much of a tear jerker as i thought it would be, probably because i knew it had to end in san marino. i like when they showed how the championship boiled down to japan two years in a row. it really did happen that way!

They did make Prost seem like a bad guy, which I didn't like, and there should have been a good portion of the film featuring Berger, as he and Senna were so close.

the antagonist thing was a little over it, but i think we can all agree that he was a bit of a snob toward his cohorts and he did jostle the rules a little.
i also knew the whole thing where prost had an alliance with the FISA president was slightly exaggerated.

Have to agree on the Berger opinion. I'd also like to have heard from Damon Hill, not just because he's my childhood hero, but because he was the last driver to work with him. The book Hill published at the end of '94, titled 'My Grand Prix Year' was originally meant to be Damon documenting his time working with Ayrton, but obviously that quickly changed. It would have been interesting to hear something from him, even if the contributions from him and Berger amounted to no more than a couple of minutes.

maybe there will be an extended version sometime but whatever i say it's fine the way it is these are just observations from my standpoint

I've watched the extended version and the Indycar test isn't in it. The extended version that is available at the moment just incorporates footage from some of the interviews that the producers carried out into the relevant point in the narrative of the film.
Maybe there will be an extra-extended version with more footage added, because I would love to see the 6 hour rough cut.

In the recent Motor Sport Podcast with Murray Walker the opinion was expressed by at least one participant that "Closer to the Edge" was better than the Senna movie. Haven't seen either so can't comment.

On the subject of films the next project for the team that made "Senna" is said to be Mon Ami Mate on the lives of Peter Collins & Mike Hawthorn & based around the Chris Nixon book. Interesting to see how they might handle that one. There must be far less footage available & many contemporary personalities are sadly no longer with us.
If you want to buy the book it can found on Amazon at about £80 USED!! Sometimes cheaper on eBay.

I also listened to that podcast and, having seen both films, would agree with that sentiment, inasfar as that the TT movie had a much narrower scope (that being one ManxTT event) rather than a decade or more of a man's career, thus could go into more depth and have fewer omissions of key events. The TT3D movie is due for release in the UK in late November.

TT3D: Closer to the Edge is now available to pre-order on DVD, as is Senna.

I was wondering were these clips came from. It's quite interesting to see how Fangio did his stuff up close, and in good video quality. Now if I can only understand what he is saying, then it would come full circle for me.

Not only that, but Ayrton also spent a day testing rally cars, which is perhaps not that well known either - the opinion of the professional driver coaching him was that Senna would have been competitive at a national level, and potentially even international level, given time to practise, but Senna himself thought that rally driving was far too risky to contemplate. http://www.racecar-engineering.com/arti ... ly-driver/

Sure. Why not? While we are on the subject, there was this sci-fi movie from the 1980s called "The Wraith" that I really liked when I was young, and still do. It was about a guy that was killing off baddies by street racing with a Dodge MS4 that could regenerate after being destroyed. Kind of a corny movie, but hey, I love it. well in that case my favorite street racing films are The Fast and The Furious(2001)
and also Fast and Furious which is the fourth movie in that series. i don't know why they had that title either.
comments on the other ones in the series:
2Fast 2Furious(2002) was laughable. had one good night race scene toward the middle of the film. Eva Mendes was ok in this one.
The Fast and The Furious-Tokyo Drift(2006) had nothing to do with the original story. Bow Wow was completely useless.
Fast Five(2011) was alright, but the Rock(Duane Johnson) was not very good. final chase scene was epic, though.
just my opinions. you guys probably don't care.

I like all of the FnF films, and I have most of them on dvd. Here's my opinion on what films were the best.

The Fast and the Furious (2001): Entertaining film that had some good chase scenes in it. 8 out of 10.

2 Fast 2 Furious (2003): Slightly boring sequel, but had a good chase near the end. 6 1/2 out of 10.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006): Worst of the series, but did have some nice drifting in it. 6 out of 10.

Fast and Furious (2009): Drags a little, but it's nice to see the original cast back. 7 out of 10.

Fast Five (2011): The best of the sequels. Nice to have almost all of the major cast members from the previous films. A good conclusion to what should have been the final film of the series. 8 out of 10.

a plot hole i found between sequels is that Han from Tokyo Drift said in the 4th movie (which based on Han i assume it's a prequel to #3) "i hear there's some crazy [stuff] in tokyo. maybe i'll head out there"
and any viewer who's seen the 3rd film will assume "that's the last we'll see of him forever", but in Fast Five he's there throughout the entire movie! whaaatt?
we assume that's the only reason they're making a 6th one, so he finally disappears to patch up that little hole in time.
Me and a bunch of other avid movie-goers saw Fast Five in theatres and audibly muttered "wait, what?"

4 and 5 are both prequels to Tokyo Drift. I assume the Han character was thinking about it in 4, but didn't go to Tokyo until after 5, which I assume they will find a way in 6. (Yeah I know, it's confusing, but at least it's not as bad as other movies.)

I've recently seen "Born To Race" on one of our cable TV channels.

Although it bears a resemblance to first three FnF movies and was shot with quarter their budget, it was quite pleasant to watch.
At some points it gets quite technical, so that little percentage of gearheads (like me) can enjoy the in-depth mechanical descriptions you won't hear in FnF.
It also has some nice cars to fix your eyes on - apart from typical JDM rides there are some beefed up muscle cars like Monte Carlo or Bel Air.
I recommend it highly

I quite like Driven too. I found as long as you don't take the film too seriously, it can be a bit of a giggle (as IIRC the main site article on it suggested). Also because it had Estella Warren in it... let's just say she makes certain parts of my anatomy grow!!!

Has Cars 2 been talked about yet? I've only seen Cars 1 & also quite liked that.

I've seen Cars 2. I have enjoyed every Pixar film that I've seen. It is not as thought-provoking or sentimental as Finding Nemo or Wall-E, but then I don't think it was supposed to be. It was just a bit of fun and escapism. And I particularly enjoyed the scene with Mater and the Wasabi...

I also liked Cars and Cars 2!

If you like street racing stuff, look up Season 4 of Tales from the Crypt. It features an episode featuring a young nobody named Brad Pitt racing an old cop to an orginal soundtrack by Warren Zevon (who has a cameo as well).
