One bloke I used to go to school with had the last name Mul, which would be the first case since Yuji Ide in wich the three-letter abbreviation would be the same as the full surname! If that is not an achievement, then I don't know what is. He currently drives in Formula Ford as far as I recall, so he might be in F1 around 2015/2016 (this is an optimistic estimate).

If I were a driver, mine would be TAS.

Anyway... last year I noticed that Chandhok's abreviation was CHD instead than CHA. Does someone know why?

Perhaps the FIA expect Pedro Chaves to make an F1 comeback with HRT (as the driver with the earlier debut, he would have the right to CHA)

You'd have the first initial of your first name as the first letter, followed by your two lettered surname.

Because of Bernd SCHneider...
Trivia: he's actually the reason why Ralf goes in the DTM as "RSC" as well.

Probably De La Rosa is DLR instead that DEL because they expected Deletraz's comeback!


A little bit off topic but this is a 3 letter abreviation too: does someone of you knows why MotoGP rider De Puniet is RDP, where the R comes from his name, instead than DEP or DPU or DPN?

I guess if someone has a 3-word name (whole like Randy De Puniet, or just surname like De La Rosa), it's easier to associate to the name from the first letters. At least, both RDP and DLR always seemed natural for me. So Deletraz could've been JDD as well.

And the earlier debut didn't work in the past as Monteiro was MON, although Montoya had an earlier debut.

I don't if that had come up before: should HWN be the right 3 letter-version, or what?

I spend half an our tonight thinking about another driver who have a surname starting with "Mon...", I remember that there was another driver, but I wasn't able to remember who he was. Thank you for mentioning Montagny!

Anyway I agree with you Tommykl: JPM would have sound really better!
Anyway I don't remember any other cases but MSC and RSC where the name was used too with the surname (except RDP and the two Aoyama in MotoGP).

Just been looking in my Grand Prix Who's Who book (by Steve Small), and there has been one other driver whose surname began with MON - Robin Montgomerie-Charrington, a Brit whose sole GP, the 1952 Belgian GP, resulted in a retirement in a self-entered Aston-Butterworth. I suppose his 3-letter abbreviation may have been RMC?

Anyway, mine would be TDB, or DEB or DBO.

For me, even now, Button is BTN and Heidfeld HFD, because that's how they appeared in EA's F1 2000 for the PSX. You had the race standings in the upper left part of the screen, well actually only three drivers appeared at once: you and the two that happened to be right in front and behind you at that point. Alongside the 3 letter abreviation, the team logo appeared as well. The full list went like:

When Olivier Panis and Giorgio Pantano were both in F1, which abbreviatons did they use? It would have been amusing if they had given Pantano 'PAN', because then Panis would be 'OPA', which would probably make him the victim of taunting in Germany

Mine will be ALH

My one can be LEV or LVY.Dunno which one to use.

I believe Panis had PAN and Pantano had PTO

I think they actually held same abbreviations.
