Yeah, why not? We offer our services, and someone pays. And hopefully that someone pays good money for his cockpit. But what kind of German name is Pierre Depault? I suggest we rename him "Peter von Paul", or so...;)

Jean-Louis is French and moved to Germany pretty soon after the War so, naturally, he named his son Pierre.

May I make a polite request that this is run as an actual F1 season rather than "F1RGP79C" due to the teams competing and the high number of original F1 drivers racing too? In other words, just a re-run of the 1979 F1 season but with a few different drivers, and one different team. Makes a bit more sense in a historical context if we're developing backgrounds in my view! :)

And on that note, here's a nice bit of background on the legendary Marshal Jenkins - F1 driver, entrepreneur and soft porn merchant extraordinaire!

Some news source wrote:FERRARI TO USE TURBOCHARGED ENGINES FOR THE NEW SEASON
Fielding Gilles Villeneuve and Rene Arnoux, Ferrari have announced that they will use turbos for the season. "We are very confident that the turbocharger will improve our engines quite a lot," said the team's engine designer. "This will set our team above the rest." With their lineup of Villeneuve and Arnoux, they are destined to be one of the dynamic duos of the season. "I'm very excited about the new season," said Gilles. "The car is fantastic and we should be the main frontrunners of the year. Anything less would be a crying shame." Arnoux had similar hopes, saying: "I'm quite confident that this car will be one of the best of the year. We should win many races this year." Ferrari cannot wait any longer for the season to start.

Okay, so what we're participating in then is the 1979 F1 season. That's cool. :)

I got confused because of the wiki pages that had gone up, so I wasn't sure whether it would be in effect a 'breakaway' championship like Tristian's F1RG2C in the mid 90s. Makes it easier for me certainly with some of the background I want to create so for me at least, I'm happy!

Yea, I named it F1RGP79C so people didn't think it was strictly F1 (i.e. no fictional drivers). Gabbiani brought Parmalat sponsorship to Jenkins by the way.

Callum McAllister, the young Spaniard, topped the time sheets in what looks to be a very fast Williasm FW07. Ligier, Ferrari and Renault also looked fast, while Lotus and McLaren will be dissapointed they are not closer to the front. RAM and Arrows seem to be midfield runners, slightly quicker than Brabham, Tyrell, Alfa, and Wolf. Jenkins and Fittipaldi will be pleased with their pace, while Shadow, Rebaque, Merzario and ATS will be looking to improve in order o start the race.

Each race will have 30 starters.
There will be one qualifying session on a Saturday

Spa back on the calendar
Spa Francorchamps has recently been announced to be back on the F1 calendar. Work has just been completed on the track to make it shorter and safer. Spa, which is now 4.5 miles long, was visited earlier this month by the FIA and deemed to be fit to hold a Grand Prix. A source from the FIA indicates that senior management thought racing at Spa was far more exciting than at Zolder, which has held the Belgian Grand Prix since 1975.

European Grand Prix announced
The FIA have announced that the European Grand Prix is now on the calendar. The race, to be held at Brands Hatch circuit in Kent, will repalce the non-championship race at the circuit that has been held for years. The race was agreed on by new FIA President Jean-Luc Knighte, who has publically announced the cancellation of all non-championship events.

New Australian Grand Prix
A race around the streets of Adelaide, Australia, proposed by a consortium headed by the Adelaidian Mayor has been approved by FIA President Jean-Luc Knighte. The track consits of a mixture of fast and slow corners, and is expected to be a big hit among Australians. "We have had, err.. , much success from racing drivers and teams coming from zis, err... continent" said Knighte, "and a race here has been, err.. , on ze cards for un long while. I am very pleased and, err... proud to make this event happen." Autosport understands that F1 is seeking to establish itself in the continent. The race will be held at the end of the season

F1 Grid expands
There will be more cars than ever before competing for this years F1 world championship. 30 cars will now be allowed to take the start at each race, and 8 unlucky drivers will have a premature end to their weekend on Saturday Morning. The measure, inspired by new FIA President Jean-Luc Knighte, will be enforced at all rounds of the season except Long Beach and Monaco, where only 28 cars will take the startn of the race.

1979 F1 preview, by everyone's favourite Scotchman Jackie Stewart - Part 1

Och aye there! Jackie Stewart here! I’ll be guiding you through what I think of the prospects of all 19 F1 teams for this season, which promises to be one of the best in years, m’lad. Sit down with a glass of Famous Grouse in your carbon-fibre armchair (we wouldn't want any accidents to happen, would we?) and enjoy my review of the contenders for this year.

McLaren – Ford

Image
#1 Mario Andretti (USA)
On the back of a highly successful 1978, Mario has signed for the McLaren squad. He’ll be wanting wins, but even with the number one on his car I doubt the chassis is up for it.
#2 : Guilliame Gauthier (FRA)
Gauthier has shined in the few F3 races he has competed in, and showed his pace by beating Mario Andretti in the pre-season test. Still, he bought his seat with sponsor ship money, and I doubt race wins will be achieved by the young Frenchman.

McLaren look to be competitive for points, but with the all-new M29 chassis not debuting until the Spanish Grand Prix, and the M28 chassis being far from race-winning material, I fear 79 will be another winless year for the squad. Heck, if they win a race, I’ll cook them some Haggis!

Tyrell-Ford
Image
#3 Hiroshi Takagi (JAP)
Takagi-san will have the whole of Japan expecting good thinks, and good things could certainly be achieved by for the man from Tokyo.

#4 Geoff Lees
British rookie Geoff seems to be on-par with his more experienced team-mate, so points are achievable.

With backing from applaince manufacturer Candy, and a strong chassi, points will be what this team will be aiming for; expect a few surprises form them.

Brabham-Ford
Image
#5 Niki Lauda (AUS)
Niki Lauda will be aiming for steady points in the Brabham this year. After a slightly lacklustre 1978, he will be looking for more from 79. A win is out of the question, but I would be delighted to be proved wrong

#6 Nelson Piquet (BRA)
This young Brazilian has a lot of potential, and a solid 79 will help him succeed. The Brabham chassis seems to suit him less than his team-mate, but I still believe he has the talent and drive to score points.

Brabham will be disappointed by the results of the first test, but they will be buoyed by the talent they have under their roof. I predict several strong races from them this year.

Lotus – Ford
Image
#7 Alan Jones (AUS)
This Australian showed promise last year driving the Williams FW06, which was not something to write home about. The talented Aussie has signed for champions Lotus this year, points will be expected on a regular basis, and he will be hoping for a break-through win this year.

#8 Harvey Jones (GBR)
The tale of two Jonses; Jones number two is a fast Briton with a lot of promise. Harvey is not expected to rival his team-mate this year, but showed he has the talent to do so by matching his pace at the test. Expect points from this young Briton.

Lotus, on the back of a dominating 78, has attracted Martini sponsorship after the departure of JPS and will be peservering with the 79 chassis this year. I feel the established team will be competitive early in the year, and although the year-old chassis is no slouch, mid-season developments may render it obsolete.

ATS/JLD Racing
Image
#9 Pierre Depault (GER)
Young rookie Pierre seems to be adapting to Formula 1 quite well. Although coming 31st in the first test, he recorded a time two seconds faster than Hans-Joachim Stuck, which bodes well. He will have a hard time hauling the ATS onto the grid.
#99 TBA
The lead contender for the second seat at ATS is German Hans-Joachim Stuck, but after a poor performance in the test, his claim for the seat may be in doubt.

ATS may be receiving technical help from JLD motorsport, but more than that will be needed for the drivers to consistently haul the car onto the grid.

RAM-Ford
Image

#10 Jan Lammers (NED)
Dutch rookie Lammers has shown pace in the junior formulae, but it remains to be seen what he can do in F1. Posting a best time of 19th in the test won’t help to silence his criticts, as the Lotus-prepared chassis was proved to be competitive by team-mate Brancatelli

#39 Gianfranco Brancatelli (ITA)
The Italian rookie has shone in the test, but keeping it up will be a tall order for him.

The RAM-Lotus 80, developed in conjunction with Lotus parent company Lotus cars, looks competitive in the hands of its two young rookie drivers. Scoring times faster than both Lotii in the test, several points finishes will be expected from the new English team. With backing from Skoal, things are looking good.

Ferrari
Image
#11 Rene Arnoux (FRA)
One of several Frenchmen on the grid this year, Rene will be happy with the performance of himself and his chassis. Coming 3rd in the test, beating his team mate, will only add to his confidence and race wins will be expected from the Frenchman

#12 Gilles Villeneuve (CAN)

The talented French-Canadian has landed a seat at Ferrari this year, and is looking good for a win. Although 79 will be his first first full season in Formula One, Gilles has the talent to succeed and a win is certainly on the cards from the French-Canadian.

Ferrari has won at least one race in a season since 73, and with a solid driver line-up another win is certain, and the title is not out of the question. The only thing that may hinder them will be the new turbocharged engine, which may be rejectfully unreliable. Only time will tell

Fittipaldi-Ford
Image
#14 Emerson Fittipaldi (BRA)
Emmo slunk down the grid last year after a woeful first season with his own team, but this year things seem to be better. The car looks to be faster than expected, but even with a team-mate for the first time in his own team, points will be a tall order

#44 Danny Ongais (USA)
The Flyin Hawaiian makes his first competitive Formula One outing with the Fittipaldi team. Danny has proved to be fast along a quarter mile, on two wheels, and only turning left, but can he drag the Fittipaldi into places it doesn’t belong?

Fittipaldi will be pleased with the test. Although they didn’t finish in the bottom 8, the threat of receiving a DNQ will not be far away for the Brazilian squad this year.

Renault
Image
#15 Jean-Pierre Jabouille (FRA)
Two years with the Renault team have established him as the head of Renault’s full time entry this year. Scoring a fourth place last year in the American Grand Prix, wins will be expected from him in the faster RS11

#16 Carlos Reutemann (ARG)
Carlos will come into this year after a 3rd Place finish in the drivers Championship more determined than ever. While it will take a few GP’s for him to become accustomed to the turbocharged Renault, wins are definitely achievable for the man from Buenos Aires.

With two fast and experienced drivers, Renault look to be strong title contenders for this year. Reliability issues with the problematic turbo engine may come back to haunt them though

1979 Argentine Grand Prix

Before the racing got started, Ferrari announced that they would be bringing a new turbocharged engine to the next race.

When the racing did get started, Callum McAllister showed the field the pace of the new Williams FW07 chassis by putting it on pole, from Jacques Laffite in the Ligier and Arnoux in the Ferrari.
At the back of the grid,Ensign and Jenkins suprised evryone by qualifying both cars for the race. With Jenkins even being faster than some of the more established teams, it seems porn isn't their only strong point. Ongais and Watson qualified on the back row, meaning Rosberg, Fittipaldi, both Rebaques, both ATSes and bothe Merzarios fail to qualify.

Image

Callum McAllister lead away fom the line, while Laffite blocked a fast-starting Arnoux and Villeneuve jumped a slow starting Sheckter. Everyone got round the first corner cleanly, but down the main straight something was clearly wrong with McAllister's Williams. His gearbox had jammed in 3rd gear, and was helpless as he limped round back to the pits.

On lap 2, faces at the Williams garage were grim as Scheckter pulled his smoking FWO7 to the side of thee track along the Start/Finish. Geoff Lees also brought his Tyrell to a standstill.

Laffite led until Lap 7, when his Ligier self-combusted along the Lake straight.

Arnoux now led from Villeneuve and Piquet, with Lauda in fourth, with Alan Jones in fifth some distance back, from Kevin and Harvey Jones, with Jabouille in 9th.

The lead of the race was shuffled more times than a deck of cards as the top 5 were within 1 second of the lead.

Piquet moved into the lead on lap 21 and proceeded to pull away from Arnoux.

A nudge from Lauda as he comes through pushes Villeneuve off the track, allowing Alan Jones up into 4th place.

Ed Kevin had closed up to the leading 5, and Jabouille had got past the RAM of Lammers and was now in 7th position behind Harvey Jones.

On lap 27, Lauda's Brabham gave up the ghost.

Both RAMs retired within two laps of each other after running a promising 7th and 11th.

Villenuve and Arnoux had reeled in Piquet in the lead, Jones was fourth and Kevin 5th, with Jabouille in 6th.

Harvey Jones suspension let go on lap 32, and Alan Jones' Lotus let him down on lap 35.

Piquet still led, from Arnoux and Villeneuve, with Jabouille closing in fourth position, and Ed Kevn 5th in the Ligier.

With gearbox problems ending Piquet's afternoon with 11 laps to go, Arnoux now led form Villeneuve and Jabouille, with Kevin beginning to close in 5th in the Ligier.

Marshal Jenkins engine failed on lap 40, ending a promising afternoon for the Jenkins team, ater running in 10th place.

Arnoux led from Jabouille, after the Frecnhman muscled his way past Villeneuve, with Kevin just 3 seconds off of the lead.

On lap 45, after the long run down to turn 4, Jabouille popped out from Arnoux's slipstream and poked the nose of his Renault down the inside... the two collided, sending them both off into the thick grass. Villeneuve inherited the lead, with Kevin now perched right on his gearbox, and Takagi an impressive 3rd in the Tyrell some 20 seconds back. Jabouille and Arnoux rejoined 6th and 8th respectively, their afternoons efectively over.

On lap 49, disater struck for the Ferrari team. Villeneuve was slowing in the straight down to turn 4, smoke billowing out from the back of the Ferrari. Kevin inherited the lead, and Takagi came through to take second place before the unfortunate Canadian retired his car across the Start/Finish line.

Ed Kevin was now in the lead with one lap to go, could the engine hold on?

It could, and the Irishman crossed the line to take his and Ligier's first win in Formula One, at his first attempt! Hiroshi Takagi pulled his Tyrrell up to 2nd, and James Hunt managed to stay out of trouble and retirement to claim 3rd for the Wolf team. Both Alfa Romeos made it to the finish, whiel only 13 cars made it to the finish. Arnoux and Jabouille managed to salvage some points from the a promising afternoon.

Image

The race was really one of attrition. Without wanting to take anything away from Kevin, he inherited the win through the misfortune of McAllister, Scheckter, Piquet, Lauda, Arnoux, Villeneuve and Jabouille.

ROTR: Engines, for ending the days for so many drivers

IIDOTR: Ed Kevin, for a fantastic breakthrough win and unrejectifying himself in one fell swoop.

Drivers Championship
1: Edward Kevin - 10pts
2: Hiroshi Takagi - 8pts
3: James Hunt - 6pts
4: Mario Andretti - 5pts
5: Alain Prost - 4pts
6: Jean-Pierre Jabouille - 3pts
7: Roberto Horford - 2pts
8: Rene Arnoux - 1pt

Constructors Championship
1: Ligier - 10pts
2: Tyrrell - 8pts
3: Wolf - 6pts
4: Alfa Romeo - 6pts
5: McLaren - 5pts
6: Renault - 3pts
7: Ferrari - 1pt

After the first race then, Ferrari, Ligier and Renault have proved to have pace. Brabham and Lotus look good, and so do RAM, while Williams have not had a chance to show their race -pace. The Alfa-Romeo looks to be one of the most relaible cars on the grid, while Merzario, Rebaque and ATS will eb looking to improve to get on the grid.
