Steepled Way for Ganassi
"Well, after the first two practice session, we kinda expected the result, as Phoenix is a unusual track". That was the word of Chip Ganassi after the result of both Scott Goodyear and Buddy Lazier. "All is new for us, including coping with the Buick engine. We know what the powerplant can do in superspeedways, but this will be a year of learning after all."
As a personal fact, I won the the old PC Indy 500 with a Lola Buick. The engine was so tunneable and the chasiss so agile that I was able to blow away the powerful (but heavy-handling) Penske, at the risk of an engine blow.

If CART goes to Australia next year, Alfa Romeo think the Thunderdrome at Clader Park should be used as it is an oval, supporting the drive for ovals by the governing body.

Phoenix - Teams Meeting With CART
"Gentlemen, after some thoughtful consideration, we still cannot find any reason to not race the Monza oval in a clockwise direction. Not only have oval races there using its original 30' banking been run clockwise, but it's usually been the case that ovals outside the United States are run in the 'opposite' direction. The gentlemen at Porsche must understand that they stand to lose a large amount of money, along with advertising potential and the popularity of their driver, Teo Fabi should they boycott the race. Both CART and the Monza organisers have agreed to schedule 7 practice sessions across 4 days, 2 each on Wednesday to Friday, and a single session before qualifying. This should provide both teams and drivers ample time to accustom themselves to the 'reversed' run. We at CART have said time and time again that machine-wise, there is almost nothing to worry about. The 20' degree banking is only a 2' degree difference between the 18' degree banks at Michigan. The main 'concern', if you like, that we agree with is driver safety, and the 7 practice sessions are ample for drivers to get used to racing clockwise. This debate has raged on and on for almost a month and more, we sincerely hope that we can finally reach some sort of agreement.
Alfa Romeo have made a good case with a possible race at Calder Park. Unfortunately, the banking is an unsafe 24 degrees, and NASCAR already runs there. It should be noted to all Monza doubters, however, that oval races, including NASCAR's, are all run clockwise. If NASCAR have no fear, why should IndyCar?"

I actually did some research into this and the reason why all races are run anti-clockwise nowadays is because it aids blood flow from the heart. In the opposite direction however, it impedes blood flow and can even block major arteries at a high enough g-force. And considering it's a 160 lap race on a large, high banked oval, it"ll pose a major health risk for the driver in those conditions
Long story sort: Porsche are still not racing at Monza unless it is run anti-clockwise.

Dale Coyne Racing announces plans for 1989 season:
The debut is planned for the Indy 500. We're planning to take part in all following races, including the Monza event. We would like to run Penske chassis, combined with a Cosworth engine. Our driver will be former Formula one driver Roberto Moreno. For Indianapolis and Monza, we are running two cars, with the drivers yet to be announced.

Newman/Haas statement:
It seems we are getting slower and slower every next session, which is unacceptable. It seems Paul Newman doesn't encourage our drivers enough with his friendly style, so Carl Haas temporarily stops negotiating with other team owners and CART directors to talk a little with Andretti family. We would appreciate some advice from former F1 star Niki Lauda, too. Our goal for the race is at least podium finish with one of the cars and we still believe it is achievable.
As for fans - we are happy they are here to fully support our sport and wish to thank them. We hope to give them the show they deserve.

Ganassi talks about Monza issue
"We don't understand the issue of not racing in one of the world's more renowned tracks. Is like saying 'we don't race there because we're afraid to be a shame'. Come on! We run in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one of the most fastest tracks on the planet!" Those were the words of Chip Ganassi after a few CART teams have expressed their desire of boicott the italian event on the repaired Monza oval. "I can understand Porsche POV, since the Europeans are eager to ban everything that goes up to 250 km/h, but Dick Simon Racing is an American team. They should be up to the challenge! Not a bunch of old prone ladies!" As for the new European races for CART, he add "If we have the posibility to go where the fans wants us, we should go. While we're basicly an American series, that's not an excuse for not betting in the European crowd. Some of CART drivers are from Europe, and they would be glad to show their fellows what they're made of, be an oval track or a circuit."
Ganassi ended the conference saying "The only way to know if Monza is safe is by testing it. I'm sure that most of the CART teams would gladly go to Italy for the chance to tackle the historic track."

You're using xkoranate or something like that, right? The reason why you're getting the errors when using code is because of the dash that sits next to the first retired driver and the other dashes that appear in "-1 laps" next to lapped rivers.Just replace the dashes with regular ones to get past the problem.

Newman/Haas statement:
First of all, we would like to congratulate Dick Simon Racing and Scott Brayton for their somewhat unexpected victory in the opening round. They have progressed well every session and it seems to have done their job better than all the rest, so they fully deserve that.
As for us, our goal was to have a good race with both drivers battling for the win until the end. Michael did it and he made it to the podium, so we are happy for his result. As for his father - he was unlucky to have that accident at the first lap, but things like that happen. We all know what Mario is capable of, so we won't make any tragedies after just one round.
Last but not least - we are happy there were lots of fans that were happy. This reminds us why we are in that business.

We would like to praise Boesel's performance at Phoenix, despite not getting the podium, showed a very good drive and keeps showing that he belongs to the Indycar world.
We feel that Huub had an average debut, but still being his first season in American series, he might be reeling of adaptation, but we hope he can evolve and take the team to where it deserves.
Pancho did a good job, but a lot of trouble on his car stopped his evolution and we grant he can be a valuable asset for the team at the oval tracks

Unfortunately, Patrick and Rene both failed to qualify, and for sure our focus has to be on qualifying for now. Wasn't sure I'd answer this, but since the first season will be based mostly on the real life season, then I'll be honest and say that it's a bit lower than the others, since you're the two new manufacturers. Of course, things will develop over the course of the season (unless you say otherwise!) and for 1990 you may get on par with the others

Teddy Yip's Theodore team enter series from Long BeachIn an anticipated move, Macau based Indonesian businessman Theodore "Teddy" Yip has revived the Theodore name, some 6 years after his original F1 outfit folded, and entered the IndyCar series. The small start up outfit is believed to be recieving backing from a consortium of East-coast Irish investors, with Irishman Tommy Byrne as the lead driver. Former Theodore F1 driver Bryne, has spent the past 3 seasons racing in the ARS, finishing 2nd in the title race last year. Yip believes Bryne is ready to step up to the big series. "In Tommy we have a driver of great talent" Yip said Friday at Long Beach. "He has proven to be a winner. Unfortunately he has not always had the cars to show his talent."
The team missed the first round at Pheonix whilst an engine deal was being finalised with Buick, who will supply Theodore with their pushrod V6, which will be used in a Lola chassis. "The package is good, we can tell that so far". Byrne commented after posting the 25th fastest time in FP1. "The Lola chassis is the best in the business, and Buick know what their up to. We weren't sure how the engine would work on the Road courses, so this morning's pace was a welcome suprise." Qualifying will be the major hurdle for this small team to begin with, on Road courses, atleast.
It was also announced that 1987 Indianpolis 500 winner, Al Unser, Sr. has signed to drive a second Lola-Buick on all ovals except Monza. Unser, Sr, a 4 time Indy 500 winner has said he won't race at Monza if the race is ran clockwise. Theodore's plans for the #41 at Monza are unclear, although it is understood Yip will enter the car if a suitable driver is found.

CART CONFIRM MONZA SWITCHITALIAN RACE TO BE RUN ANTI-CLOCKWISECART and Trofeo Alfa Romeo officials have come out in a joint-statement confirming the new 400-mile race to be run in Italy later this year will be run in the traditional anti-clockwise direction, after a roar of disapproval amongst IndyCar teams. Earlier, CART had confirmed the race would be run in a clockwise direction, something more familiar in European races. However, a majority of teams, most notably the officials at Porsche North America and Dick Simon Racing, in addition to opposition from smaller outfits such as Andale Racing opposed the move, citing safety reasons. After several behind-doors discussions between CART and the IndyCar teams, it is understood that the Monza race will not only be run in an anti-clockwise direction, but that the banking will also be reduced a further 2 degrees to 18 degrees, similar to the banking at Michigan International Speedway. In a statement, CART officials said, "After lengthy discussions between CART, IndyCar teams, medical officials and the Trofeo Alfa Romeo organisers, it has been agreed that the race will now be run in the traditional anti-clockwise direction. In addition to this, the banking will also be reduced to 18 degrees in order to lower speeds and G-Forces, of which teams were fearful would be too much for the drivers to handle. It is hoped that drivers and teams who were intent on boycotting the event will now think otherwise. CART will always remain committed to working together with teams and drivers, on the road to building a safe and exciting racing series."

Well, somebody noticed when I dropped by randomly. That does not happen at other boards. However, my intake of live TV broadcasts of motor races this year has been rather slim when compared to previous seasons, just like I intended. I kind of like this "diet" because it gives me more time to do other things than sit in front of a screen. And I tell you the more time you spend in front of a screen while on job duty, the less you want to do that in your spare time. So it's not that I'm "back" to the same extent that I used to be here before. I have also completely stopped listening to Jamie and Enoch's podcasts for this year, but I'm looking forward to their season review edition.
All the best to you guys. Thanks for keeping this board alive whilst some of the members only drop by occasionally.

Dick Simon, while talking to ABC wrote:"Well Gary, we didn't know what the problem with Scotty's Lola-Chevy was, he just couldn't get it up to speed in the same way Bobby and Arie could. Right now, we're as disappointed as he is, although we're of course hoping for a great race for Bobby and Arie."
Gary Gerould wrote:"One more question, with the Monza race now being run anti-clockwise, will your team attend the event?"
Dick Simon wrote:"We do so, albeit begrudgingly. After all, we have commitments to our sponsors, and we don't want to lock out our drivers from racing for political reason. Therefore, Dick Simon Racing will be at Monza."
Gary Gerould wrote:"Thank you Dick Simon, and back to you, Paul."

Gary Gerould wrote:Jean, Little Al on the pole position and Teo Fabi on the second row. Mission accomplished for your team?
Jean-Louis Depault wrote:Well, this was a good day for us Gary but, as we well know, Sunday's the real payday we're hoping that both Al and Teo stay up the front tomorrow.
Gary Gerould wrote:We heard from Dick Simon moments ago that they'll be racing at Monza later this year after following in your boycott of the event. Will we be seeing Porsche there later this year?
Jean-Louis Depault wrote:Well, we have achieved what we are looking for, which was to look after the interests of our drivers, and since their concerns have now been addressed, there's no doubt we'll be racing there later this year.
