Campaign to rename the current teams

Post by LucaPacchiarini »

Ferrari > MutinaThe original name Enzo Ferrari came up with, before being persuaded by a friend to change name. Mutina is Modena's ancient name.

McLaren > LeslieBruce Leslie McLaren is the founder. Therefore, his first surname is Leslie. And that should be the team denomination.

Red Bull > Krating DaengMateschitz took the original idea for the Red Bull energy drink from an asian drink with that name. That's the original Red Bull.

Mercedes > TyrrellBecause mercedes took Brawn's place, which was Honda's, which was Bar's, which was Tyrrell.

Williams > IsoTheir original name in the 70's.

Renault > TolemanThey took Benetton's place, which was originally Toleman.

Force India > JordanJordan became Midland, then Spyker before Mallya bought the team

Sauber

Toro Rosso > MinardiThey use the same old factory in Faenza as the old Minardi team, and they employ many old Minardi mechanics.

Virgin > ManorThe Virgin F1 team was based on the Manor F3 team

Lotus > 1Malaysia Team because they've got no connection to the real Lotus whatsoever

HRT > Camposthe original name is more reject-significant

So, what about Sauber? How should we call it?

Leslie is his middle name, surely? His parents were Les and Ruth McLaren, so I expect he was named after his dad.

McLaren is of course Project 4.

On the podcast, the Team now known as Team Lotus has repeatedly been called Fondmetal Team Malaysia which is a name that would help them overcome their name rights troubles with Group Lotus a/k/a Group Bahar.

Virgin Manor sounds much better than the team's current branding because of its closeness to Playboy Mansion.

Toleman should be a given. The same goes for Project 4.

And for Sauber, you'd better look at what the PP in the original name PP Sauber AG stands for. (A hint: it's not Peter Sauber's first name).
"I don't think we should be used to finance (the manufacturers') R&D because they will produce that engine anyway" said Monisha Kaltenborn.
"You will never see a Mercedes using a Ferrari engine or the other way round."

Haha... it's the anti-Playboy Mansion. Or the holding pen for Playboy Mansion. ;)

Admittedly the naming line goes Marussia Virgin Racing ---> Virgin Racing ---> Manor Grand Prix, but why not go right back to Nick Wirth's previous team and call them Simtek?

Someone fire up GIMP and change the red on the VR-01 to dark blue!

Red Bull = Ram Ball

McLaren = McNeral (Neral is Laren spelt backwards)

Ferrari = Ferreira (At least many people would get Carlos Ferreira's name right...)

Mercedes = Brawn GP (That's what it is, basically)

Renault = Benetton (Because I never quite liked Renault anyways.)

Williams = Williams (What's wrong with this name)

Force India = Force Jordan

Sauber = Bauer

Toro Rosso = Bull Sh*t (Their translation from Italian... or Spanish... I don't know which one)

Lotus = Hmm... I don't know...

HRT = ART (Auto Racing Team)

Virgin = Bourbon (Russia -> Vodka -> Bourbon)

Sort of. Ken Tyrrell ran customer Matras in 1968, but there was also a works Matra team which used their own V12 as against Tyrrell's Cosworth power. It is true to say that in 1969 Matra abandoned their own team to concentrate on Tyrrell's effort which was renamed Matra "something or other"..."International?" In 1970 though Tyrrell started off running customer March cars but it was a) a bit rejectible & b) Tyrrell thus brought forward his own car hurriedly constructed by the late Derek Gardner in secret/his garage. Tyrrell though had been around in lower formulae throughout the 60s so he did not take over the Matra name, rather the other way around (for one season).

What about calling McLaren Rondel, the F2 team and then failed F1 project ran by Ron Dennis that later became Token? Well at least that was Dennis' first venture.

Virgin = Simtek
Team Lotus = Toyota (most of their race team and design office is ex Toyota)
