Your IIDOTR- Australia

I'm shocked and appalled this thread hasn't been opened yet!
I'll nominate Sergio Perez, for outdoing Kamui of all people, and challenging Jenson and Felipe, all on his debut!

1. Petrov - I thought he might end up snaring 5th place, but went on to get 3rd
2. Perez - Amazing first race.

Umm... Carlos, Eagleash and I have been spending the last 4 hours discussing who was to open it
And you're not even doing it right.
Anyways my nomination is as follows:
1.
Petrov: Utterly dominated Heidfeld all weekend and deserved his podium
2.
Sauber: Perez finishes 7th with one stop while Kobayashi finishes 8th in the other car.

Petrov, Perez.
This'll be a landslide.

Petrov's was a great result but for improbability, which again is what this thread is about- this isn't a driver of the day thread- Perez finishing 7th on debut and one-stopping on Pirellis is a possible contender for 'Of The Year', never mind the race.

Well, I can't really decide which one gets first place, so I threw a coin.
1. Sergio Perez
2. Vitaly Petrov

1 - Petrov - Wow. It makes you think how well Kubica would have done.
2 - Perez - For a first timer, that was brilliant.

1. Petrov (he looked just as confused as I was)
2. Perez (must have brought some GP2 tyres with him)

I think that the general consensus of the forum is probably going to go one way only
1. Petrov. A very well deserved podium, and fully on merit - he qualified well, raced intelligently and had good solid pace throughout the race. And yet again he found himself in the position of holding off a charging Alonso; that will be a real boost to his confidence, and goes a long way to removing the perceptions of him being "just a pay driver".
2. Perez. He showed some real flashes of good pace and smart driving, and was able to hustle Button for 6th for a while too. And as they said, when we approach the tracks later on in the season where tyre wear is more crucial (Canada, Barcelona etc.), he could end up in a surprisingly good position.

I was going to say mclaren, but petrov and perez really stole the show

1ST Vitaly Petrov
Made Heidfeld look like a bumbling fool. Eric Boullier must feel vindicated, once again he keeps Alonso at bay for a good result!
2ND Sergio Perez
Tactically brilliant - almost Button-esque in keeping his tyres in good enough condition to only need one stop. 7th was just reward for his measured performance. Beating your team-mate on your debut is also a good sign...

1 - Perez - Excellent debut, kept his tyres in shape brilliantly
2 - Petrov - Good step up with Kubica's absence and Heidfelds medocrity, a well deserved podium

1- Petrov:
As lead driver, did the job and did it well. Brilliant drive.
2- Perez:
Ole!

Petrov Just look at all the names finished below him.
Perez The Advil Man. One is often enough.

Petrov has one season experience, knows his stuff, started 6th, was 3rd by the first corner and finished on 2 stops.
Pérez is more deserving. He was on a 1-stop strategy, that no-one else thought could work, and he managed to take care of his tyres in his first ever race. Was in the middle of the pack and went through unscathed. On plus, he's still a reject

So for me it is 1) Pérez, 2) Petrov.

I was going to say Petrov and Pérez, too. But to add another voice, let me say Heidfeld and HRT.

I'd love to see anyone putting up a serious case for anyone other than Perez and Petrov.
I'm going to nominate Vitaly in front of Sergio, if for no other reason than after race 1 he's shut down all the "what if Kubica was here?" questions, because the short answer is: Kubica wouldn't have done better than 3rd either.

Well, some people are already saying that The Cube would have won...

There is no way Kubica in a Renault would have beaten Vettel in a Red Bull today. He might have managed to close the gap to Hamilton a bit, but 3rd was the best a Renault could have got I feel.

Yeah, Kubica wouldn't have done any better. Petrov was phenomenal.
Shout out to the Sauber lads too, both had good races. Kobayashi did 2 stop though so that puts him and Perez about equal.

Clearly.
1. Petrov - Couldn't have started the season better. I knew he had good raw pace, and it looks like he's turning potential into reality. He could well be a dark horse this season if he keeps it up.
2. Perez - I have to be honest, I didn't think much of Perez in the run-up, but he's certainly proved me wrong. A clear early contender for rookie of the year.
On that note, I would like to point out, perhaps we should pay attention to who is second in GP2 as opposed to who wins it - after all, Petrov and Perez were the runners-up in the last couple of seasons.

1) Sergio Pérez. He managed 7th on debut ahead of his highly regarded teammate and put an end to all discussions about tyre wear.
2) Vitaly Petrov. Taking his and Russia's first podium ever, with a clean and consistent drive. It was slightly less improbable than Pérez, though, as the renault was expected to be a good car.

Perez - Stunning drive from a rookie. Even given that the car was disqualified, he showed good consistent pace, and made the tyres last.
How long until he is in the Ferrari and Massa is back at Sauber ?

1) Perez. Don't care about the DQ, that was an unbelievable performance by someone I expected little from.
2) Petrov. Great stuff, and only 2nd because of that nagging feeling that Button at least should really have been ahead of him on performance.

For me it was Petrov. He really surprised me.
Close second from Perez. I was hoping for this result (before DSQ) from Sauber and Kobayashi but Perez was really good. Maybe it gets reinstated...
