Energy Drinks - modern day Tobacco sponsors??
Energy Drinks - modern day Tobacco sponsors??
came across this rather interesting article about how Energy Drinks are set to be the new equivalent title sponsors that once belonged to the Tobacco companies in F1..
http://autoracesponsor.co.uk/2012/07/12 ... onsorship/
what we'll end up with is..
Redbull Racing (currently the only one)
Lucozade Mclaren Mercedes - as the article explains GSK - owners of Lucozade have got good ties with Mclaren
Monster Mercedes AMG - that just sounds COOOOL, and being an American Brand, it won't surprise me the slightest if at the US GP we see more branding from them on the silver arrows.
Scuderia Ferrari TNT
EQ8 Caterham
KH-7 HRT

I don't blame him. Energy drinks can be substituted for cleaning products if need be.

RH-7 probably tastes nicer then Red Bull...
Energy drinks have always been in F1. In the late 90s there was NRG (Tyrrell), Power Horse (Arrows), Hype (Benetton), Red Bull (Sauber) with Jordan going one better and making their own with EJ-10.

I don't know what the FIA's stance is - but Bernie doesn't like it. Remember BAR? When they first joined in 1999, they wanted to run a Lucky Strike livery for Jacques Villeneuve, and a 555 livery for Ricardo Zonta. When Bernie said no, we got the infamous 'zipper' design.

Monster will only get increased branding if Petronas agree to it. They are, after all, title sponsors, so they will be opposed to anything that might take away from their branding. And I can't see that happening, because Monster would probably want something prominent and consistent with their other motorsport sponsorships - like Ken Block. Which has the potential to look fantastic or horrendous, but would involve making them the most prominent sponsors.

Vitamin Water and Mio for life. (oh, and Iced Tea too.) Energy Drinks are just too nasty in general, with or without Alcohol.
But hey, legit sponsors are good-ish, right? New money into a sport when times are rough for many.

The Silver Arrows pair came so close to securing a dream 1-2 race start at the end of qualifying on Saturday. Michael Schumacher blew away the competition with a blistering lap around the 2.07 mile (3.3 km) circuit, which would have been enough to secure his first pole position since his return to F1. Unfortunately the penalty ruling after the collision in Barcelona with Bruno Senna meant that Michael was handed a five-place grid penalty, forcing him to start from sixth.

Some energy drinks were, and in certain countries still are, subject to bans - Red Bull was only recently allowed to sell its products in France after the French banned the drink on health grounds, whilst certain energy drinks are required to carry health warnings due to their high caffeine content.

I'd say the only reason for the boom iswhen RedBull bought Jaguar. Before that, we just had sponsors. All of a sudden, we had an energy drink as an actual team.
And didn't Hype also sponsor Footwork in 1995?

No, I mean the actual energy drink market. Not the presence of energy drink branding in Formula 1, but the public, commercial side of things.
Anyway, I've heard rumours that Vodafone might be pulling out of Formula 1 very soon. I know there was a story about it a while ago, but I've heard that they weren't happy with the Bahrain Grand Prix going ahead, and that they tried to get their logos removed from the McLarens for the race, but were unable to do so and now they are said to be lacking confidence that the race in 2013 can go ahead without any negative publicity. So if Bahrain is on the 2013 calendar - whenever it gets released - Vodafone might back out.

i don't see why they can't pull away from f1. remember when they heavily sponsored the US grand prix back in 2007? yeah, we don't get vodafone service here in the states....or signal from them.... or any presence of them at all other than those signs all over the track.

I meant that they couldn't have their logos removed from the McLarens for the race in Bahrain because of their contract with the team. They can walk away entirely any time they want - it's just that they couldn't take a step back for one race.
All of this is rumour, of course.

So the obvious solution is to just fail to renew the contract until the Monday after the Bahrain GP, or to get this clause written into the contract. How hard can it be? (The Bahrain GP is early enough in the season not to adversely affect McLaren too much, I would have thought.)

The rumours that Coca-Cola will take over from Vodafone as title sponsor of McLaren seem to be growing stronger. The latest one that I've heard is that Coke will sponsor the team through their energy drink Relentless, which has a lot of UK-based sponsorship, but no real worldwide coverage as far as I'm aware. And the name "Relentless McLaren Mercedes" does sound kind of cool.
The contract isn't renewed race by race.
They would have to wait until the contract is up for renewal.

Re: Energy Drinks - modern day Tobacco sponsors??
I've read over the Saward and Pitpass articles on the idea of Coke sponsoring McLaren, and I have to say, the Pitpass one seems to be far more credible. I know, Pitpass doesn't have the greatest reputation, and I don't think much of Saward, but I'm trying not to let either of those colour my thoughts on the subject.
Pitpass describe Coca-Cola as doing some serious research on Formula 1 recently, and while we only have their word on that, Saward's entire argument is that Lucozade's presence on the McLarens makes it impossible for Coke to sponsor them. And I'd be inclined to agree with that, but several things spring to mind: firstly, that Lucozade isn't the only brand owned by GlaxoSmithKline. They own the likes of Macleans, Nicorette and NiQuitin. Lucozade is perhaps the GSK brand that fits sports sponsorship best, but I could see Nicorette appearing on the car. Secondly, Saward doesn't even explore the way contracts can be bought out. Will Buxton, on the other hand, reckons that the rumours are actually fairly serious, and while Lucozade's branding does make things difficult, he seems to think it could be done.
In short, it appears that Saward is attacking the Pitpass report because it was written by Pitpass, rather than based on the actual content of the story. I had to laugh during the telecast of the British Grand Prix when the Australian commentators referred to him as "the respected journalist, Joe Saward". Saward isn't respected - just read the comments section of his blog. He can't post a story without someone criticsing him for it, and he can't take those criticisms down without a repeat of the "Mallya lied" saga, when he deleted any comments that opposed him.
