"Race of Rejects": The HWNSNBM Cup
Posted: 06 Oct 2009, 08:25
by Kuwashima
As announced on the Singapanese GP podcast, the Race of Champions is on in early November. How boring!! Since we're in need of a new segment on the podcast, we are going to hold our own "Race of Rejects" to co-incide with the ROC.
Since the actual drivers aren't available, we're going to make do with Enoch and myself down at the local go-cart track, merely (and perhaps pathetically) acting the part of our heroes, somehow infused with the spirit of the drivers in question, as they do battle for the HWNSNBM Cup - and answer once and for all who is the greatest reject.
Your task - from this short-list of 10 ultimate F1 rejects, help us pick which final 4 drivers will take part in the semis! Each post should contain your top 4
in order of preference from 1 to 4. SImple! Select from:
Allan BergJean-Denis DeletrazFrank J. DochnalTaki InoueTom JonesMasami KuwashimaPerry McCarthyOtto StuppacherEric van de PoeleAlex YoongVoting closes as the lights go out for the start of the Brazilian GP. We will record what goes on at the track for inclusion in the Abu Dhabi GP Edition of the podcast!

Edited to add: Oh, by the way, mates, this is a GREAT idea.
(Can you even use "mates" in the plural like that?)

Jean-Denis Deletraz - We are STILL wondering what he was doing.
Tom Jones - It's NOT unusual!
Masami Kuwashima - How can I not vote for a Wolf F1 driver!
Otto Stuppacher - Could sound great pronounced like Supa! Aguri!

I would have voted for "F1's first and only kawaii driver", "the guy who started the race despite not having qualified", "the guy who was black-flagged for being too slow" and "the guy who led several laps in his debut race in the least car of the field".
But as they are not in the contest, I'd pick Eric VDP. He was very friendly when I got his autograph, having sneaked into the paddock in Spa when he drove for Fondmetal. Perry McCarthy deserves to be included for his great book. Alex Yoong should be there, too, because he probably will become the next Team Lotus driver talent scout.

We need one more vote from you, Yannick! Choose a fourth driver from our list!

1. Perry "Stig" McCarthy
2. Jean-Denis Deletraz
3. Eric van de Poele - I'd have placed him 5th but the fact he's requested his profile to be updated is too good to ignore.
4. Frank J. Dochnal

I think this sounds like a great idea... When do we get to hear the results? In the Abu Dhabi edition (as RoC is only a few days post-season finale) or in post-seaon review podcast?

Additional thought - Why the heck isn't Yuji Ide on the list? He is the greatest reject of all time!

1. Jean-Denis Deletraz
2. Taki Inoue
3. Otto Stuppacher
4. Perry McCarthy
-Deletraz because his record is unbelievable and is a permanent part of every podcast intro.
-Inoue because he admitted the greatest pressure he faced as a driver was meeting the payment schedule demanded by the team.
-Stuppacher because he qualified at one point 27s off the pole and has a great name that can be pronounced with panache & verve.
-McCarthy because he seems to be such a good all around sport

I believe it is a golf cart driven by Eppie Wietzes, F1 reject and F1's safety car reject.

I can already see the race unfolding infront of me...
McCarthy doesn't even make the grid, his car has a terminal gearbox failure on the outlap.
Inoue jumps Deletraz at the start, and pulls away. But McCarthy in an attempt to get going again gets stranded on track. Safety Car comes out, but Taki hits it and takes himself out of the race.
van de Poele leads by 4 laps over Deletraz, but with only 4 laps remaining, van de Poele's engine expires, and Deletraz slowly unlaps himself to take a last gasp victory!
So, in other words, the final result is:
1. Deletraz --
2. van de Poele -1 lap
DNF. Inoue
DNF. McCarthy

To "jump" him at the start, doesn't Inoue have to qualify
behind Deletraz? The only possibility for anybody to be outqualified by Deletraz is to either not qualify at all or drive the Pacific PR01.

Would the 1997 Lola be quicker than the Pacific PRO1 from 1994?

What about the no. 2 Andrea Moda, as "driven" by Perry McCarthy?

Alas, the corrupt race director (i.e. Me) fixed qualifying so Deletraz would start on pole, with Inoue behind, McCarthy "3rd" (though we all know he won't make the start anyway) and van de Poele last
