Grand Prix Rejects

Here's an idea: how about a leaderboard of Rejects of the race to see who has been awarded the most RotRs? (Although his identity probably won't come as much of a surprise to anyone ). I know this doesn't have much to do with podcasts, but nor does it have much to do with current goings on or reject drivers and teams. If you're wondering where all the decimals come from, when there was a RotR shared between more than one person/team/thing I count it as decimal points for each recipient. For example, at the 2008 Bahrain GP each member of the 'Fools Britannia Sextet' scored 0.17 points. So, without further delay...

Now that IS impressive. Even we haven't been keeping such a thorough list all these years!

Finally we know why the FIA stewards judgement has been so bad over the last few years-They're trying to top this leaderboard. On another note, can you imagine Murray Walker commentating on this ("And there's Fisichella taking Nakajima out-another ROTR award! Oh, amazing, McLaren have lied to the stewards to give themselves an ROTR! Great stuff!")

We proudly gave ourselves ROTR for the 2001 Belgian GP when - ironically given who's leading this illustrious leaderboard - Fisichella came 3rd in the awful Benetton B201 despite us having written him and Benetton off all season.

The Curva do Sol was ROTR in the 2003 Brazilian GP for the terrible drainage, the river running across the track, and the mayhem it caused!

I think it's quite interesting that of the 18 drivers who recieved RoTR in Canada, Anthony Davidson is only one who hasn't got award for other races.

Even at the risk of the numbers getting incredibly small (and the decimals getting long), I think the calculation should be weighted by the number of seasons in which the person or inanimate object participated. That might boost the campaign of the FIA stewards, because they participated in every season since the arrival of the ROTR award, but it won't help them against Fisi. But it would be somewhat problematic with people like Pele, because we don't know in how many seasons he was around, and Honda even got an award recently BECAUSE they weren't around anymore.
Well, maybe it's best that we forget about this idea ...

This list is funny. Isn't Lewis doing well for his meagre amount of seasons?

Speaking about drivers, Yuji Ide seems to have highest RotR rate with 25%. Of those who have received one, Nick Heidfeld has smallest I think (1 in about 140 races, taking account the races where RotR was not chosen which means mostly races of early 2000) Meanwhile, Liuzzi has the record of getting RotR at his second race.


These four races seemed to be without RotR after it was introduced in French GP 2000 thanks to Alexander Wurz.

Thanks for pointing out these glaring omissions. We'll need to do something about that, and fast! I think we held off from giving Nelsinho any ROTRs last year in the thought that he was a shoe-in for ROTY until his late-season burst.

At least Pizzonia has won ROTY, in 2003.

Bleu, that's a fascinating list.

If Nelsinho is lucky and improving, he can still get away without an award. Still, I'm pretty sure that causing the multi-car pile up in Brazil in the early 90s would also have handed Eddie Irvine this prestigious award. It wasn't around then, but instead, the FIA banned him for 2 races, if I recall correctly.
The fact that Monteiro and Baumgartner haven't gotten one is probably just down to their individual success in 2 different US GPs and the low expectations, which might also be true for Salo.

I was sometimes thinking old races and who would got RotR. I may post a list in a few days. Myself, I have followed all races since 1993 (or late 1992).

Salo would take easily at least one: Hungarian GP 1999.

I'm pretty sure that Salo should have gotten ROTR for every race he replaced Schumacher over Badoer.

What about the 1998 Belgian GP? Who would get that ROTR? Everyone in the field except the 2 Jordans? Everyone in the first pileup? M. Schumacher and David Coulthard's infamous crash? The list could go on and on and on...

I seem to recall one announcer calling Ricardo Rosset an idiot because he just piledrove his car right into the middle of the maelstrom, well behind everyone else. Can't find the audio though, probably on the American broadcast.

I find it strange that that Michael Schumacher, 7 time World Champion is 2nd place on this leaderboard. I think it would it be hilarious if Schumi himself had another record: Most ROTR awards! I'm guessing that Fisi would pass him soon enough it that had happened.

Fisi is in a reject-free situation... if he does bad, it's "Ooh, it's just the equipment"... if he does well, it's "Wow, he's outdriven his equipment".

How does Reject of the Year factor into this, 'cause Button's won it twice ...

Fisico got two last year even he had worst car on the grid (Sutil had one too), so it's not doen to machinery every time. But in all those cases they made errors.

If top driver has bad race then he's quite often given RotR. Without checking I think Michael got ones:

USA 2002 (half)

In top 10 there are two other world champions (Alonso is not too far behind) while Massa and Montoya have been in the championship fight once (JPM lost the chances in 2003 penultimate round)

Yannick, I couldn't have come up with that myself. Where do you get it from?

Anyway. Poor Fisichella, he's notorious for his bad luck. And when he doesn't have bad luck he screws up himself. He's my favourite driver out of the current bunch (for lack of anything better), so I hope he'll be more succesful in the future...

Also, this championship has at least a decent number of classifieds! We should have numbers of drivers like that in Formula One!

I was doing a count on which categories have earned how many RotRs. Didn't do that yet because I was thinking which categories are needed.

Drivers

Sorry about the long delay, I was on holiday. Anyway, the list is now up-to-date as of the Spanish GP. For the first time since this leaderboard was created, the RotR has gone to a person/organization/thing that had already received the RotR previously: Ferrari. The Scuderia jump up from joint-10th to joint-6th on the leaderboard, level with the FIA stewards and Honda. So it's now a tie between Ferrari and Honda for the highest ranked team, both well ahead of the next highest, a 4-way tie between BAR, Jordan, Renault and Toyota.

Ah, but are Honda and BAR really the same team? Eh? Think about it...

I think Honda got two as a engine manufacturer: Belgium 2002 and Malaysia 2005. Then rest as a team or organization (Australia 2009)

Not as far as I'm concerned. A new name means a new team. BAR was a British team owned by a tobacco company, Honda was a Japanese team owned by a car company. Go to any F1 statistics website and the stats for BAR will not include its time as Honda, or vice-versa. If BAR and Honda are the same team then Force India and Jordan are the same team and Red Bull and Stewart are the same team. So China wasn't the first win for Red Bull, since their predecessors Stewart scored a victory. And Force India didn't just miss out on their first points in Monaco, since their predecessors Jordan and Spyker scored points. Does anyone really believe that? Honda may have receive the car numbers, price money, pit garage etc that BAR would have had, but this only makes them a continuation of BAR's entry, which IMO isn't quite the same thing as being the same team. I guess we all have to make our own minds up, and it's not really important, since neither team achieved much in the way of success, but IMO BAR and Honda are different teams. Related, but different.

I understand that. I'm just saying...

Leaderboard now up-to date as of the Monaco GP. Sebastian Vettel's 2nd RotR elevates him from joint-38th to joint-22nd in the rankings, level with Alex Wurz, the Ferrari pit crew, Toyota engines, Mercedes and Christian Klien. This turns the huge tie for 38th place into a huge tie for 39th place...

Was this the inspiration for the Superfund entry - to get as many of the 22nd-placed RotR people in the same team as possible? A Vettel/Klien line-up with a Wurz-organised car powered by Toyota built at the Mercedes factory and with a Ferrari pit crew would be entirely possible...
