Grand Prix Rejects

So, yeah, I did this once before, but some things were plain wrong. I didn't take into account in a proper manner the points-scoring systems of each period (no discarded results, for example), and also I didn't include a Constructors Championship, which would be interesting to have.

However, I did still take one small creative license: in the CC there were different rankings depending upon the engine a chassis entered (for example, Cooper-Climax and Cooper-BRM). I still give all the points to a single chassis entry because I deem it unfair that, being no Engine Championship, a constructors' effort is divided. I also considered Indy 500 efforts too sui generis to be included.

Well, yes indeed, Laffite scored 4 poles in the first half of the season, thus getting maximum points, and then he scored a few points there and there to withstand Jabouille's late challenge when Renault perfected their engine/chassis combo and Alan Jones in the Williams FW07 appeared. Ferrari was the more consistent team, but they didn't have enough relevant results to dethrone the French two.

What really surprises me is how far down Benetton are in the years 1988 - 91 - they had well and truly made the big 4 by then but they must have raced way better than they qualified!

Well, Qualifying and Race are 2 different things altogether. With McLaren and Ferrari assured of having 4 of the 6 points-paying positions in almost every race, there was a fierce battle for the crumbs. Also, the teams who had Pirelli tyres had a distinct edge in some qualifying sessions in 1989-1990. Bear in mind, too, that neither Nelson Piquet nor Alessandro Nannini were great qualifiers.
