Grand Prix Rejects

The big one is coming in 11 days. The season finale at Curitiba, where no less than eight drivers are mathematically in with a shout of the championship title.

For those not aware, the Stock Car Brasil contains a few familiar faces - both reject and non-reject - and some are still in contention for the grand prize this year. Topping the table by 14.5 points is Rubens Barrichello, currently in his second Full Time season...you see what I did there? No? I'll get my coat then...

The main protagonists are relatively young drivers all looking to take their first Stock Car Brasil crown. Átila Abreu was somewhat in control of the championship until a nightmare weekend in Bahia, but is still Rubens' closest challenger. Thiago Camilo has been the bridesmaid in the championship twice before - there's no doubt he's talented, but making up 24 points to Barrichello with 48 on offer is going to be a tough challenge. Júlio Campos, younger brother of the late Marco Campos, is a bit of a surprise in the 408, having never consistently run at the front in years past.

After Campos, you start to get into the contenders that need all hell to break lose to win the championship. Antônio Pizzonia is currently having the best Stock Car season of his career, taking his first two career wins this year and having that outside chance of the title going into the last race. Cacá Bueno is a name many may have heard of - he has only finished outside the Top 3 of the championship once in his 12 year career, back in 2008 when he was 4th overall. He goes into the finale this year all the way down in 7th - a bit of an unusual situation for a driver used to success.

Other drivers in the race who aren't in the title hunt include Ricardo "Lucky Bastard" Zonta and Luciano Burti, who everyone here should be familiar with, along with notable names from other disciplines like Raphael Matos and Max Wilson. Chico Serra's son Daniel is in the championship for quite a few years now too, as team-mate to Cacá Bueno.

So, who is going to win? Will Rubinho show them how it's done and proceed to cause widespread flooding in the Paraná region thanks to all the tears that will result? Could it be a first title for Abreu, Camilo or Campos? Or will Bueno just troll the lot of us and somehow win yet another title anyway?


Meanwhile, even if he's not going to win the championship, I will be cheering on Fraga. Won on his Stock Car debut at Interlagos this season at just 18 years of age. A champion in waiting. #ForzaFelipe

Of course I will cheer for Barrichello, he needs a good title after more than 20 years. Go Barrichello!

I was thinking in create a thread like this, but I always forget.

I'm really impressed with Barrichello. It's only his second season and he isn't a youngster. There are good drivers in this racing series with more experience than he (most notable the son of the most annoying f1 commentator of all times, Cacá Bueno). I was wondering if he still have talent for a F1 comeback. Also, I think he could be a great driver for WEC. I'm cheering for Rubinho. Will be great to see him winning the title.

Looking at the bottom of the table: What Bia is doing!? She is doing way worse than she did in Indycar. She failed to score a single top 10 in all season. She scored only 15 points. If you count only the drivers who only participate of all races, she is only ahead of the reject stock car driver Fabio Fogaça. Bia is a indycar reject and she will be a Brazilian stock car reject too.

Stock Car Brasil is one of the most underrated series in the world. I hope Barrichello wins but Átila Abreu could still do it.
It would be nice to see the series have a one off race in Britain although the chances of that happening are incredibly slim.

I will be trying to watch the season finale, but isn't it on the same day as the 6 Hours of São Paulo?

I have to say, I have really been getting interested in Stock Car Brasil recently. South American motorsport in general is quite exciting

So am I... I wouldn't rule out V8 Supercars either. NASCAR's oval heavy schedule leaves me questioning if Rubens could be anything more than Marcos Ambrose/Juan Pablo Montoya/A.J. Allmendinger.

You can't ask for more in a title decider than sticking it on pole. But he'd better be careful not to trip up...with Abreu and Camilo so close behind, a mistake might cost him the title.

Looking at Bia's IndyLights results, she comes across like she is an oval specialist. Here's hoping she can make a comeback stateside at the Indy 500 next year because ovals are her domain, not road courses.

Must be at least 21 years since Rubens last won a title. Hopefully his sons will remember him winning this one.

Bruno Senna and Nicolas Prost are going to race in the first race of Stock Car Brasil, in Goiania.

Indeed, the first race follows the same format as last year's opener at Interlagos, with a longer distance and co-drivers. Some interesting names;

In the #111 alongside reigning champ Barrichello will be Ingo Hoffmann, who in the process will become the oldest Stock Car Brasil driver of all time. Despite his 62 years, he will most likely be as fast as Rubens, what with being a 12 time Stock Car champion!

Red Bull Racing are clearly not messing around; partnering Caca Bueno in the #0 will be Jose-Maria Lopez, and alongside Daniel Serra is his father Chico, F1 Reject and 3 time Stock Car champ himself.

The lead Ipiranga-RCM car has a strong pairing; alongside eternal nearly-man Thiago Camilo will be Lucas di Grassi. A potentially unpopular choice could also be in the mix: alongside last year's championship runner-up Atila Abreu will be Nelson Piquet, Jr.

Some other notable cameos up and down the grid from cars that aren't likely to contend for victory;
Shell Racing #10: In a bizarre vote of no-confidence in the team he owns, Ricardo Zonta has left his RZ Motorsport squad for pastures new. There will still be some familiarity though - his ex-BAR team-mate Jacques Villeneuve joins him for the opening round.
RZ Motorsport #14: Perhaps with Jamie Alguersuari on board as co-pilot, Luciano Burti might not be quite as hopeless as normal.
C2 Team #83: Enrique Bernoldi, who himself has some experience from Stock Car Brasil in the past, partners Gabriel Casagrande
Schin Racing Team #110: It's only his third season in Stock Car Brasil, and already Felipe Lapenna has been at enough teams to be considered a journeyman driver; this is his third team since debuting in 2013. Perhaps having Superturismo front-runner Vitantonio Liuzzi as a team-mate might finally help him score a good result?

To me, Bia has always come as an oval specialist. I feel she should have kept on going with racing IndyCars, even if it had meant only annual starts in the Indy 500 because that's what she is good at. It would be nice if she returned for some of the ovals this year as a part-time entry. Yet, with the Brazilian race of IndyCar having fallen through, that is not very likely.

What an idiot. That was actually embarrassing, especially considering he is an ex F1 champion

2nd round was held at the Ribeirão Preto Street Circuit. It was a doubleheader.
Narrow track with plenty of rain before the race, but most drivers managed to keep it out of the wall in the changing conditions.
In the first race there was a good fight between Bueno and Wilson for the lead. Wilson eventually slipped back and it was M.Gomes racing Cacá at the end.
Fogaca was running 6th when he decided to tear down the fence in one turn, he had one spectacular accident.
Rejectful moment at the end with the checkered being waved only for the 3rd place finisher and the top 2 kept racing for an extra lap.

Race two saw my favorite SCB driver, Vitor Genz, in his first ever pole position. Many drivers came in the pits during the formation lap as the track dried up.
Matos had a hard crash with his teammate Lapenna. Luckily for them, it was in the only corner on the circuit with a runoff area. Still a HUGE hit for Matos.
As Genz is not one of the top names and not to mention he is racing for one of the worst teams out there, he held up drivers behind and amazing racing ensued.
4-wide on a street circuit? Check.
Zonta, apparently having learned from Villeneuve wrecked Fogaca on a straight.
Another underdog, Tuka Rocha was probably the fastest driver on the circuit, but it was too narrow to really make passes.
Cesar Ramos proved that he is one of the least talented drives out there and brought out a safety car setting up a mad dash to the finish.

Well, in Brazil, they do say that all the craziest people come from Paraná. I'm sure he thought he was perfectly justified in doing so after Fogaca ran him into the fence on the exit of T2!

Surely it's only a matter of time until Atila Abreu gets that first title. Only person on that track making clean move after clean move. Guy has the skills, just needs the luck and he'll finally win over the course of a whole season.

Yeah, Abreu was impressive, I agree with you on that his title is not too far down the road. However it wasn't just him doing so well, Rocha also made clean overtakes and we got to be happy for his Maldonado-like unrejectification.
Had his tires not go away, Genz would have had something for them though. That Peugeot was really wide in the opening laps.

A lot of things happened in this weekend:

First, Caca Bueno, one of the title runners in this year, was fined and got a racing because after some confusion in the chequered flag in the race of Ribeirão Preto (like Pele in the 2002 Brazilian Grand Prix). Caca Bueno, the race winner, cursed CBA (the Brazilian motorsport confederation) in the radio: "They are dumbasses. As usual, in the CBA, a bunch of dumbasses". Because of the race ban, Caca lost the lead to Marcos Gomes. Barrichello is the third.

Second, the double round in Curitiba was marred by a nasty crash in the main straight. Thiago Camilo had problems in his car and slowed down in the straight. He was near of pit wall and no yellow flags were waved. Rafael Matos tried to avoid but he hits Thiago and Felipe Fraga who was behind Matos, smashed him at full speed. Not only this, but during the events, dogs and even a child crossed the track. A forgettable weekend for Brazilian Stockcar.

I've always been supportive of Pizzonia, but yeah, that was rather dumb. Then again, the guy he tangled with momentarily followed me on Instagram (true story!) then unfollowed not so long after that... it's been two years but I suppose karma has been served. (Don't take my last sentance too seriously, as if having a ton of followers on there matters more than anything )

If I understood the reports on Globo correctly, this put Foresti in hospital. Stupid stupid driving. He caused the first incident that put him pointing backwards to begin with. OK, his view is probably blocked by Tuka Rocha's car, but still....

Did he get a ban for this? I hope the stewards threw the book at him.

He got a ban for the next qualify session. He is going to start in the last position. No penalties for the next race.
