Welcome To The Roaring Twenties



The year 1923, a time between the two World Wars, it was also a time which saw rapid developments for the automobile and Grand Prix racing, which was a thrilling new phenomenon at the time. I'll be hosting this championship to mark the 100th Anniversary. The races will be simulated in Assetto Corsa using cars from that year, and the race calendar will feature numerous authentic vintage race tracks.

How To Enter

You can sign up a maximum of three drivers; one will be your main driver, the second will compete at tracks where there is room available, and the third will serve as a backup in the event that any of your two main drivers suffer an injury or is killed.

A few things to note before entering,

Name, they can be a real driver past or present but fictional drivers are also allowed.
Age 18 to 60.
Weight 60kg to 90kg.
Driving styles, aggressive, balanced or cautious.
Experience, rookie, competent, expert.
Team, any can be picked.
Car colours, chose one, each team has a few, you can change it later if needed.
Backstory, isn't required but it would be preferred.

Voisin

It has the strangest appearance of the group, it was a prototype that represented Gabriel Voisin's technical and aerodynamics abilities. The cars unique design and manufacturing methods represented advancements in sports car design. Although it is the lightest, it doesn't have as much horsepower as the others.

Francois Roland, a French businessman, and Émile Pilain, a family-trained auto mechanic, established Rolland-Pilain. The creation of the first hydraulic brakes is the company's biggest claim to fame as a manufacturer. It is by far the heaviest car in the group and has the second lowest power.

The bodywork of this sleek, bullet-shaped car actually caused lift, so it wasn't quite as great as it appeared to be. Despite being one of the heaviest cars, it has reasonable power.

Sunbeam

It has lots of power, but the weight is where it truly matters with it being the second lightest. Although it has far greater power than the Voisin C6, it is only 14 kg heavier.

The Fiat, the first supercharged Grand Prix car, weighs about the same as a Sunbeam but has significantly more power.

How realistic is it?

We have 22 tracks to race on, some of which are very dangerous and where drivers could suffer serious injuries or even lose their lives. The cars all drive and behave differently, and the tracks are all historical; I know that most were constructed after 1923 but I was limited on the choice of vintage tracks available for the game. If it's cold and snowing in real life, it will also be that way in the game. Track conditions may also vary throughout a race if the real life weather does. Tyre wear, fuel consumption, wind speed, track and air temp are also simulated. During the race, the cars can pit for repairs if they are damaged.

What happens if a driver is injured or killed?

Minor injuries will allow them to race at the following event, but significant ones will keep them from competing for three weeks to three months. You get to decide which back-up driver will take over if a driver is killed or injured. When a driver sustains a minor injury, their performance at the following race will be slightly impacted. However, when a driver returns from a more serious injury, their performance will be reduced for the remainder of the season, though it will gradually improve.

Backstory: Sir Percy Holmes was born in 1893, and he's grown up to be an excellent horse rider and a good race car driver. He owns several racing stables and is interested in breeding horses, so he has quite a few nice horses running around on his land. He also likes being near water; he keeps a yacht moored at a marina nearby, and he takes his family sailing whenever they can.

Being friends with Royal Family has its advantages; of course, occasionally, when he's competing in races, he'll receive invitations from King George V or Queen Mary to appear at events at Buckingham Palace. If you're ever invited by Sir Percy to attend one of these events, you should go! You never know who else might show up—King George might even be there himself.

At the age of 15, Sir Percy attended a motor racing demonstration at Brooklands in 1908, which sparked his passion for the sport. After the first World War and being hailed as a war hero, Sir Percy moved his focus away from horseback riding and into Grand Prix racing. Over the past four years, he has competed in many races and had success.

Model and dancer Mariette Hélène Delangle achieved great success performing under the name Hélène Nice, which she later changed to Hellé Nice. She was able to acquire a home and her own yacht thanks to her considerable earnings. Although she avoided an avalanche and survived, she suffered a serious knee injury in the incident.

Later, race car driver de Courcelles introduced motor racing to Nice. The Paris region was one of the main hubs of the French automobile industry at the time, and there were lots of competitions for auto enthusiasts. Nice jumped at the chance to join in the racing event at the annual fair that was arranged by fellow performers from the Paris entertainment industry because she loved the thrill of driving fast cars.

Quick Update

With a week to go until the opening race of the 1923 season, I thought it would be good to quickly review who has signed up so far and provide some other details that weren't covered in the original post.

The First Race

The practice session will take place on Thursday the 12th and the results will be posted here. Qualifying and the race will take place on the following day. I will try and upload highlights to YouTube, the results of the race will probably be posted up on the Saturday or Sunday.

The team manager, Sir Finlay Underwood, will compete in several races himself. Two more drivers will race for the team, but only at specific events. They are Prinz Johann Wilhelm Freidrich Oscar and Duque Gonzalo Gonzalez.

Practice Report

A few lessons were learned from today's practice session, including the fact that overtaking on these winding, narrow roads is extremely risky and dangerous. Due to the poor amount of grip that was available to the drivers, the weather conditions made things even more challenging.

Furthermore, it appears that everyone attempting to overtake Hellé Nice gets some sort of bad luck curse placed on them, which causes drivers to slam into a wall. The good news is that it's forecast to be dry and sunny for qualifying and the actual race.

Injury Reports

Even though this was just a practice session, many incidents occurred, some minor and some more serious.

1. Archie Bohanno was forced to abandon the session due to minor injuries (some bruising). He has been declared fit by the doctors to compete on Friday in the race. He will, however, have a minor performance loss just for this race, and he should be fully recovered by the next one.

2. At 92 km/h, Antonio Ascari struck a railing head-on (57 mph). He fractured some of his ribs and his hands and sustained a concussion. He will need three weeks off to heal. The race tomorrow and the Spanish Grand Prix in two weeks' time are off-limits to him. For the Sachsen Grand Prix, the third race of the year, Antonio Ascari should be back and ready to race again.

3. Donald Wings crashed into a wall at a speed of 71 km/h (44 mph). His injuries are significant enough to prevent him from participating in this race, but his doctor anticipates that he will be ready for the next one in Spain.

4. Pietro Bordini crashed into Donald Wings, but only at a low speed. His doctor has given him the all-clear to race.

5. When Gwenda Hawkes ran off the road and struck a barrier, she sustained some minor injuries (bruising), but the crash occurred at a low speed. She will be allowed to compete in this race, although she will have a small performance loss for it. She should be fully recovered in time for the next race.

6. Georges Mignolet broke his left knee and hip after crashing into the wall at a speed of 119 km/h (74 mph); he also crashed into Kay Petre shortly after at a speed of 90 km/h (56 mph). He will require three months to heal, and he won't be eligible to race again until the Merseyside Grand Prix in April. Michel Coopmans will replace him.

7. After being struck by Georges Mignolet, Kay Petre spun out and hit the wall at a speed of 90 km/h (56 mph), but she somehow managed to escape with only minor injuries. That is until Henry Segrave came along and smashed into the side of Kay Petre's car at a speed of 48 km/h (30 mph), inflicting multiple injuries on her, including a broken hand and ribs. She'll be unable to compete in this race and the Spanish Grand Prix in two weeks but should return for the following one in early February. Joan Newton Cuneo will replace her.

8. The accident for Henry Segrave, who struck Kay Petre, wasn't too serious at all; he suffered some bruising and was startled, but the doctor has given him the all-clear to race. He will only see a slight performance drop for this particular race.

9. Tobias Lammonby crashed into a guardrail but it was at low speed and he was braking hard before it. He got away with some bruising and will only see a slight performance loss for this race.

10. Sir Alfred Moss collided with a wall at a speed of 66 km/h (41 mph). His injuries were extensive enough for his doctor to advise him to withdraw from this race, but he should recover in time for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix later this month.

The race did take place as scheduled, but real life stuff got in the way, and for some reason, my computer had problems rendering the video. The practice for the Spanish Grand Prix is today, and the race is tomorrow. I'll try to post the results over the weekend or early next week.

Qualifying Report

Sanjay Atimanusa and Pietro Bordini both clipped the barrier but were able to complete the session despite their close calls. Considering the mayhem of yesterday's practise session, there were no severe accidents during qualifying. The only notable incident had Sir Percy Holmes hitting the wall with his car, but it wasn't serious enough to make him stop and he continued.

Race Report - Sunbeam Shine In Targa Florio

Sanjay Atimanusa started on pole position and led the pack into turn one, everyone got stuck in and already there were a few overtakes but it would only be a minute into the race before the first bit of drama took place. Walter Anzungolst clipped the side of a spectators car and spun out which blocked the road. Contact was made with Michel Coopmans sending him off the road and out of the race. Henry Segrave damaged his car in the pile up as well and he was next to retire.

The pile up was cleared but the retirements kept coming in, Hellé Nice and Robert Benoist both had mechnical issues which was likely caused by the bumps and bashes they had while waiting for the pile up to be cleared away.

Eventually the race settled down and 10 minutes in Sir Percy Holmes now led the race but there was just half a second between him and Pietro Bordini in second, Sanjay Atimanusa who started on pole was now third. Then Arthur Legat spun off the road after taking a corner too quickly, he's lucky he didn't hit anything and tried to continue the race but his car was stuck on rough off road terrain, which meant he was out of the race.

Half an hour into the race Sir Percy Holmes was still leading, Sanjay Atimanusa moved up to 2nd and Pietro Bordini had dropped to 3rd. At this stage of the race only 8 drivers remained. As time went on and we neared the end of the race Sir Percy Holmes remained in the lead with a 4.7 second gap ahead of Sanjay Atimanusa but Gwenda Hawkes found herself in third place, this is because Pietro Bordini had a very bad accident. There was also another bad crash with Tobias Lammonby earlier on as well it was a serious one.

With 5 minutes to go until the cars are expected to finish word came in that someone has broken down its Walter Anzungolst, he was racing at top speed at the time and his engine gave out, so close he was about to overtake and claim 4th place as well, what a shame.

Sir Percy Holmes went onto win the race, Sanjay Atimanusa finished 5 seconds later in 2nd and Gwenda Hawkes 11 seconds later in 3rd.

Injury Report

1. Michel Coopmans was hit by Walter Anzungolst when he made contact with a spectators car. Michel Coopmans lost control of his car and drove off the road, fortunately not resulting in a high-speed accident. He was unharmed but had to abandon the race because of damage to his car.

2. Henry Segrave was involved in the pile-up shortly after the race began; he was in a low-speed crash that wrecked his car and forced him out of the competition. Henry Segrave was uninjured by the incident, which is good news.

3. Tobias Lammonby narrowly missed a spectators car at one of the tight corners before crashing head-on into a brick building at 93 km/h (58mph). He sustained a number of injuries, including a concussion, fractured wrist, broken ribs, broken hand, and spinal fracture. He will be out of action for at least six weeks, but doctors anticipate his comeback in early March, just in time for the Fonteny Grand Est Grand Prix.

4. Pietro Bordini injured his hand after hitting a guardrail at 94 km/h (59 mph), but he's expected to be back for the third Grand Prix of the year. He'll need 3 weeks off to recover. He will be temporarily replaced by Pierre de Vizcaya.

Bugatti Show Strong Pace During Practice

After the race at Targa Florio just two weeks ago, it was still the main topic of discussion because the endurance race had rendered some drivers injured and out of action after a number of accidents. However, there was a strong turnout today, with 16 drivers attending practice.

It's safe to say that Sitges-Terramar is one of the most deadly races on the calendar. Despite such being the case, there were no severe accidents or injuries in the practice. The only noteworthy incident came when Pierre de Vizcaya, a local favourite, nearly caused Robert Benoist to crash out of the session. Robert Benoist put on an outstanding demonstration of skill as he quickly brought his car under control and avoided a serious accident.

Race Report - Tragic Deaths At The Spanish Grand Prix

Although Hellé Nice started the race in pole position, she had a poor start, and all of the Bugattis were slow off the line. Robert Benoist quickly overtook the Bugatti's to take the lead. There was little contact here and there throughout the opening few laps however nothing catastrophic happened.

By lap 5, it was obvious that the Bugatti's were very fast, and Arthur Legat overtook Robert Benoist to take over the lead in the race. Hellé Nice, who started in first place, was now only two seconds behind Robert Benoist as she began to close the gap between them.

Near the halfway point, Arthur Legat had a lead of just under 7 seconds ahead of Pierre de Vizcaya who was now in 2nd. It was a Bugatti 1-2 with Robert Benoist in 3rd racing for team Delage. Hellé Nice was in 4th but had dropped further back and was nearly 8 seconds behind the race leader.

Then word got out of a serious accident on lap 23, there was a huge uproar from the spectators. One of the Bugatti's had veered off the track. It was Hellé Nice, who went out too far on the banking and at a speed of more than 160 km/h (100mph) she flew off the track. Later, it was revealed that she had died.

As more laps passed, Robert Benoist managed to pass Pierre de Vizcaya for second place in front of the large crowd that had gathered at the race. Although Arthur Legat was driving very well and had a lead of about 8 seconds as the race continued, he had a few close calls when on the banking and while passing some of the lapped cars.

On lap 49, the crowd once again made a loud commotion, but this time it was significantly more upsetting. With only two laps remaining, the race's leader, Arthur Legat, ran wide and went off the banking exactly where his teammate Hellé Nice did. Tragically along with Arthur Legat, three marshals also perished in a huge accident.

This meant that Robert Benoist, who had just begun the final lap, was now in the lead. He went on to win the race; Pierre de Vizcaya, the only Bugatti to finish, came in second. By finishing third, Henry Segrave gave Sunbeam another podium result.

However, the celebrations were cut short after the tragic events that took place. The deaths of the marshals and the mystery surrounding their placement on the banking will be looked into. This race serves as a reminder that Grand Prix racing is an extremely dangerous sport.

Injury Report

1. When Hellé Nice drove off the banking, her car briefly took off into the air before plummeting back down into the ground at 166 km/h (103 mph). The car then struck trees at 106 km/h (66mph). Hellé Nice was pronounced dead at the scene. It's not clear if Bugatti plan on replacing her for the next race, news will be out about that later.

2. Similar to his teammate, Arthur Legat was involved in an accident at the same corner, but his car hit three marshals at a speed of 154 km/h (96mph). At 145 km/h (90 mph), Arthur Legat's car overturned and landed on its side. He was tossed into the air and struck the same tree's that Hellé Nice had been recovered from earlier. Both Arthur Legat and the three marshals were declared dead at the scene. User Butterfox can choose whether or not to replace him with a new driver.

Yes, I believe that the Bugattis at the Sitges-Terramar were just too quick on the banking due to their smoother ride than the other teams. Luckily the next few races don't look to be so dangerous for the drivers, now that I've said that I've probably jinxed it



Since I haven't yet created a replacement for Hellé Nice in the Bugatti, I'll use Barney Jones, my backup driver, in the Voisin for the upcoming race.

Pietro Bordini Fastest In Practice After Returning From Injury

It was overcast at first but brightened up near the end of practice, and it was cold—the coldest temperatures the drivers have driven in so far this year. Teams breathed a sigh of relief as all drivers navigated the track safely and without incident.

However we did see plenty of overtakes as the drivers tried to put in their fastest lap times and it was Pietro Bordini who claimed the top spot, with a blazing time that saw him as the only Fiat driver among the top five, he made a triumphant return after taking a race off to recover from a injury sustained at the Targa Florio event last month. Meanwhile, Sunbeam put on a strong showing, with four of their drivers clinching positions among the top five.

Pietro Bordini's impressive performance during practice had already demonstrated the raw potential of the Fiat on this track, however, it was Antonio Ascari who ultimately claimed pole position for Fiat. Gwenda Hawkes, behind the wheel of the Sunbeam, secured a strong second place in qualifying, while Archie Bohannon, racing for the HMRT team, rounded out the top three. Despite Pietro Bordini's less-than-ideal qualifying performance, , which saw him starting from the eighth position, the stage was set for a thrilling race with top-tier talent behind the wheel.

Race Report - Fiat Celebrates Double Podium Finish with Ascari and Anzungolst

Today's weather presents a picturesque scene of a serene overcast sky with crisp, dry air. Despite the chill in the air, the excitement of the race is palpable as Antonio Ascari, starting from the pole position, made a commanding start, effortlessly securing the lead as he exits the first bend. Soon after the race began, Kay Petre's car was spotted pulling over to the side of the road; the engine in her car had malfunctioned, eliminating her from the race. As the only representative of the Delage team, this was a disappointing outcome, particularly in light of their recent victory at the Spanish Grand Prix two weeks prior. It is a race they would rather consign to the annals of history.

In a show of sheer mastery, Henry Segrave deftly overtook his teammate Gwenda Hawkes at the start of the second lap, solidifying his position in fifth place. Antonio Ascari continued to lead the race, with a 1.9 second gap over Archie Bohannon in second and a 4.5-second gap over Walter Anzungolst in third. The thrill of the competition intensified as Pietro Bordini made a fearless move, passing Sir Percy Holmes for sixth place on the third lap. The Italian driver did not relent, pushing his limits further as he made another impressive pass, overtaking Gwenda Hawkes on the fourth lap to secure fifth place.

As the race progressed to lap 5, Antonio Ascari maintained his lead, with a 4.1-second advantage over Archie Bohannon in second place. Archie Bohannon, however, was fiercely focused on fending off the relentless charge of Walter Anzungolst, who was closing in with a mere 0.6-second gap. The battle for the podium intensified as Henry Segrave, who had worked his way up to fourth place, was rapidly closing the gap to the top three drivers, adding to the nail-biting excitement of the race.

Lap 6 was uneventful, with the only noteworthy development being Henry Segrave's persistent pursuit of Walter Anzungolst for third place. At the start of the final lap, Henry Segrave finally made his move, successfully overtaking Walter Anzungolst to claim third place. However, his triumph was short-lived as his car momentarily veered off the road onto the grass. Despite his quick recovery and return to the track, he had fallen half a second behind Walter Anzungolst and lost his grip on third place.

The race culminated in a triumphant victory for Antonio Ascari, marking his return from injury and earning him his first victory of the year. This was also a momentous occasion for Fiat, as it marked their first victory of the year. Archie Bohannon's remarkable performance earned him a well-deserved second place, securing HMRT's first podium finish. Walter Anzungolst, driving the other Fiat, rounded out the top three, delivering a strong showing for the team.

Race Report: Fiat Dominates in Thrilling Race, Bordini Takes Pole Position and Victory

Sunday's race saw a marked improvement in the weather conditions, with dry and sunny skies overhead. However, the persistently cold temperatures continued to pose a challenge. As the race began, Pietro Bordini in his Fiat got off to a strong start, but the event was not without its initial drama. When Henry Segrave, who was starting in 4th place, moved off the line, his car immediately lost control and spun out, causing him to collide with Antonio Ascari.
