IIDOTR - Canada 2024

Post by TomPryce »

Alpine - great job chaps.
Ricciardo - I know he fumbled the start but a great weekend all told.

Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - Canada 2024

Post by Londoner »

1. Haas. They deserve plaudits for trying something different at the start, shame it didn't work out in the end.

2. Alex Albon. That double overtake on Ricciardo and Ocon was amazing.

1 Alex Albon- That Double overtake was incredible. was on course for points until he was taken out by Sainz.

2- Alpine- Actually did a fairly good job and got a double points finish

HM Haas- Did something different at the start and seeing K-mag as high as 4th was amusing. Didn't work out but it was a fun watch.

Alpine: Double points – various drivers and teams impressed, but on the final results, they're the standout (especially after the recent drama).

1. Alex Albon: Robbed of points but still earns it in my mind for an insane overtake and a great race.

2. The combination of changing weather and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve: The Canadian GP is one to forget or one for the history books. Although I hoped for a winner other than Max, it was a hard-fought race and the rain-to-dry conditions were the secret sauce. It was great from Lights Out to the Checkered Flag.

As it seems Alpine and Albon are getting a few nominations already, I'll go with the slightly less orthodox choice of Ricciardo.

Given Tsunoda's had the measure of him in most races, this was one of the few weekends where Ricciardo had better pace and looked a bit more like the driver he used to be, as well as picking up a useful number of points for the team.

Mercedes would be my pick here, after a string of... whelming performances. Both drivers managed a decent haul of points where Ferrari, the stars of Monaco, did abysmally.

Alex Albon: That double pass was just the icing on the cake. Should have made it back to back points finishes only to be unfortunately collected by his potential team mate for next year

Mercedes Team: Finally some life in the Silver Arrow this year beyond the practice sessions. For the first time in 2024 they were up there challenging for the podium on merit (not counting Hamilton’s wet qualifying assisted China Sprint) and if anything they were the quickest car all weekend and should have won so fair play

HM: Alpine: A much needed double points finish but I’m knocking them down to HM because of more drama in handling their drivers

HM: Daniel Ricciardo: Maybe he should employ Jacques Villeneuve as his motivational coach because in the face of heavy criticism (some of it true) this weekend, he qualified 5th and grabbed a first Sunday points finish in 8th. The challenge now is to make performances like this, the Miami Sprint and Mexico last year the norm rather than the exception.

HM: Haas: Just for being bold and different at the start of the race by starting on the usually useless wet tires which propelled both cars into the top 8

1) Alpine - double points from the back, excellent job.

2) Albon- That 'splitting the atom' overtake was truly spectacular, if it weren't for Sainz, could have been a brilliant final result

1. Haas tyre call
Especially when everyone is complaining that full wets are useless, it was a good decision. Magnussen pitted into inters at the right moment, too bad the stop itself was bad.

2. Alex Albon
Deserved a mention for his double overtake.

Ricciardo? No. He was on a par with Tsunoda and that's exactly what we expect. If he is clearly ahead of Tsunoda every race and achieves results that nobody expects (podium), then he deserves it. But he has only done the minimum that can be expected of him.

Mercedes? No. Thanks to the cool weather, the pace was there. The pace was always there this year when the weather was cool, but never in warm weather. So I don't expect the next races to be as good for Mercedes.

Alpine? No.They made a fool of themselves with their driver order. And thanks to the retirements, they scored points and would otherwise be exactly where they always are: Just outside the points.

For me, it's Haas with the tyre choice and the risk of trying something that almost worked.

Anyone who did not make any kind of mistake - In a race like this, keeping the car on the track for the whole race and pitting at the right time deserves to be appluaded. A significant amount of drivers made some kind of mistake or error in this race.

It's not what I expect. Sad to say, I don't think he's good in the current car.
