A whole grid of cars racing backwards at the same time? Crazy!

I think Top Gear already has featured Dutch Reverse Racing... but if they did it was on Old Top Gear, it was the kind of thing Tony Mason was known for reporting on when his Northern tones weren't talking about rallying or vintage cars. When it came round to Reliant Robin racing, he was entered in a race, and as Current Top Gear says, "that's not gone well!"

There are a few archives of Old Top Gear on Youtube and... accessible by other means. If I was ever to watch right through them all I might even find it, if it's there, but I'm sure I remember the cars in that feature being Beetles (presumably with the back axle flipped over). Of course, this being the Netherlands, using their own pride and joy was the logical move, because those DAF Variomatic gearboxes could go just as fast in reverse as they could forwards. I'll bet that was a right barrel of laughs on the streets of Amsterdam.

Incidentally, how many of you knew the Volvo 340 was supposed to be a DAF? Show of hands...

Plenty of DAF's and VW bugs there. I also spotted several Morris Marinas, a couple Chevy Impalas, a Ford Escort, an Opel Kadett, a few Citreon 2CVs, a few Austin 1100s, a Renault 5, an even a Mercedes E series.

only the dutch would think it was a good idea to go backwards racing in DAF (missing a t there i thing... lol) but then they had a form of Continous Variable Transmission meaning they went as fast bacwards as the could go forwards.......

It certainly says something that with not one but two DRS zones and Pirelli tyres, there was nothing interesting about that race.

This, ladies and gentlemen, explains why NASCAR just can't be taken seriously by people outside the States. "200 miles per damn hour"? Really? This guy drove when NASCAR cars could easily get 240 m/h.

Darrell Waltrip probably did half of that on purpose in order to make good TV. That's the kind of person he is. It probably didn't scare him as much as he let on (the quality of the drivers in V8 Supercars I think left him in legitimate awe though), but again, Ol' DW is a showman above all else.

This has nothing at all to do with F1, but is extremely rejectful.
Instead of using a grader to remove the bumps from the track, the organisers of the speedway decided to replace it with a very unique piece of equipment - which didn't work very well (you'll have to watch the video to find out what it is).

Opel recently launched an advertising campaign in France, where people kept talking in German to show off just how good German cars are.

You are correct - the Dutch reverse racing cars visited the UK a few times in the 90s, and I was in the crowd when Tony Mason stepped into a Mk1 Escort to compete for Top Gear's cameras at Hednesford Raceway. Beetles, Golfs, DAFs (which as you said had Variomatic transmission hence they could go just as quickly in reverse giving rise to the formula in the first place) and a couple of homebuilt specials also featured - another feature is that the drivers did not sit facing the back of the car, but had to look over their shoulder and use mirrors to race.
