BRM day - classic F1 cars in public! OCT 2012
BRM day - classic F1 cars in public! OCT 2012
'ello all,
A heads up for my fave bunch of F1 fans -
I come from, and live near Bourne, UK, which, if you didn't know, was home to BRM, which gave Graham Hill the 1962 world championship. They also had many other famous drivers from that era, and under the leadership of Raymond Mays they were one of the many "garagistes" of the 1960s.
Sadly they petered out in the 1970s, and while Mays' buildings are long gone (indeed the last trace of Ford influence in the area closed up just last year) former BRM employee (designer?), Mike Pilbeam continues to manufacture sportscars in Bourne, and Hall&Hall own and prepare many classic racecars in the town.
Now in the past I have been critical of the town's acknowledgement of the heritage, with not much more than a little monument since the big event in 1999.
However I'm really excited because this year there will be another BRM day, in Bourne, Lincolnshire, on the 7th October this year!
http://www.brmday.co.uk/
So yeah, I just wanted to spread the word around, I don't really remember the previous one, but having various 1960s and 1970s F1 cars running around a small county town will be a unique event that all fans should see. I have heard rumours that they are even trying to reunite all of the participating cars from the 1962 grid!
I hope to see some of you there!

That looks excellent! I'd love to see something like that, particularly as it's a special one-off event, so I'll have to see what I'm up to around that time.

This looks like it could be interesting. Remind us all nearer the time, though!
James Allen, on his favourite F1 engine of all time:
"...the Life W12, I can't describe the noise to you, but imagine filling your dustbin with nuts and bolts, and then throwing it down the stairs, it was something akin to that!"

AndreaModa, being so close to Virgin Marussia F1, do you know Richard Branson? Can you please ask him if Virgin Trains go anywhere near Borune in Lincolnshire?

Is Lincolnshire in the Midlands or deep south? I don't understand English geography anywhere south of Liverpool!

Lincolnshire is up north, isn't it?
(Says someone who thinks anywhere north of the M25 is up north... And anything west of his university/Heathrow is the West...)

I'm pretty sure Lincolnshire is slightly north of Liverpool. It's just on the other side of the country. I think.

If I remember my British geography correctly, I believe it's just south of Yorkshire, which is about level with Liverpool, I think.

Yorkshire and Liverpool are level, so Lincolnshire must be a little bit south of it?

All I know is, it's south of Hull, and I know f*** all about English geography south of the Humber & Mersey. Face it, if I were English, I'd be a through and through northerner. Mon the Toon!

Only the very northern end of Lincolnshire is level with Liverpool - most of the county sits below Merseyside, and Bourne sits close to the southern border of the county, pretty much due north of Central London and to the west of The Wash.
As to actually getting there, that looks a touch more difficult - there is no railway station by the looks of things, so you'd probably have to make your way from somewhere like Peterborough (about 15 miles to the south), which looks like the closest town with a rail station.

Its a little bit north of Peterborough, so is actually quite far south, and not too far away from being classified as East Midlands, if it isn't already.

Haha fair enough, well you know it never hurt to pull out on atlas or check Google maps!

I know for a fact you'll struggle to get there on Virgin trains, because their services run up the West Coast mainline, so the nearest they'll get is Northampton. You'll want to take an East Coast mainline train to Peterborough I'm guessing, from there it may be the case a local service will run to Bourne, otherwise you'll have fork out and take a looser cruiser there with the pensioners and chavs!

Oi, f**k off you opulent little sh*t, travelling there by horse drawn carriage are we? And don't retort with a joke about the other kind of Stagecoach you cheeky f***er!!!!!
But yeah, I would have to take either East Cost or CrossCountry to get across to Peterborough. Unfortunately I have not had the kind of luck I had expected. Whereas I can get to Newcastle and back for £20 (handy for travelling to St James' Park), Peterborough will set me back at least three times that even if I scour the internet for the discounted fares. I think I will have to pass on BRM day then

Far be it from me to tell you all to spend lots to come down, but it really will be a unique event that probably won't be repeated for some time. If anyone needs info on local places to stay or transport info just let me know!

You'd think...but no. I can get from Glasgow to Milan and back for less than Peterborough. How stupid is that?

It's the logic of the British transport network - which urges the public to use unreliable, over-priced and unpleasant public transport over road vehicles which themselves are burdened with abominably high taxes and high fuel prices and a piss poor road network to drive on.

I just checked something. Edinburgh to Peterborough and back by train will set me back around £64, and that was after using every trick in the book I know to get cheap fares

And the hilarious thing is that's actually pretty good to be honest when you consider the distance involved and typical train prices. How long would the journey length be Kostas?
£64 is comparable to a tank of fuel which would get you probably there and back, though that would depend on your car's fuel economy, but if the journey is twice as long, why pay for a train? And I bet that price doesn't include a seat reservation which means you might not even have a seat at some points!

It does come with a seat reservation. Ironically, if you shop around and get the cheapest fare, they do come with reservations, it's the open singles and returns that don't, which cost even more. Plus, that is only the Edinburgh to Peterborough part of the journey. In addition to those four hours, there is the 30 min from Peterborough to Bourne...50 minutes from Glasgow to Edinburgh (which will add £14 to the cost too), 1 hour from Glasgow to Lanark, and then 20 minutes on the shite wee country bus to the field I live in. So...a total travel time of almost 12 hours, and at a cost of £78. Bathplug!
FYI, I don't own a car, becasue, guess what, can't afford one! The insurance is so mind boggilingly highly priced there is no way I can keep even the smallest and most economical car on the road. Hence why it's public transport or no dice for me. And no, nobody is going to drive me from Scotland to Lincolnshire, because nobody I know has any idea who BRM are!

I'll tell you what, look at flight prices from your nearest airport (Glasgow, wasn't it?) to something like Stanstead or Luton and I'll pick you up at the airport, on the way to Bourne. If you shop around early enough, you should be able to pick up flights at very decent prices.
We might need to look at staying over somewhere nearby.
From my current location in the south-east, it's 140 miles each way (pretty much motorway all the way). There is a high degree of probability that I will not be living in my current location in October, but we can address that if and when it happens.
Send me a PM and we'll discuss further.

Is anyone else up for this? I'm definitely going. If anyone needs a lift, I'll be leaving Kent and driving through to Bourne and I am open to making some detours along the way to pick up anyone who wants to go.
Let me know.

I'm certainly interested, though I'm unsure where I'll be in October as I'm finishing uni in a couple of months, though I anticipate I'll be living in Bristol by then. In any case, if me and my girlfriend go, we'll take her car, and if it's just me I'll ride there.

just a small update - Damon Hill and his family has been confirmed to be attending - with Damon driving his father's championship winning BRM from 1962!
Also rumoured is Jackie Oliver, former Lotus driver and Arrows founder! more recently he was an excellent contributor to the BBC doc "Grand Prix: the Killer Years"

Really excited; might get press access through local connections too
Glad to see some of you might make it.

Brilliant! Might take my knackered copy of 'Grand Prix Year' which I've had since I was old enough to read and get Hill to sign it!
