F1 driver's homes
F1 driver's homes
While working down in Maidenhead last summer I remebered readind somewhere that Ronnie Peterson had been
a resident in the town along with Howden Ganley back inthe 1970s. It's within the F1 corridor close to Cookham
Dean etc. where the likes of Keke Rosberg used to live.
So, after a little bit of research I found the address and set off one summer's evening along the leafy Thames
to pay homage. Although quite what I intended doing I am not so sure of! Well I finally crept up outside the
house as dark was falling on a perfectly still July evening. There it was: a fine detached house in a quiet road
in an obviously well-to-do area of the town. I guess I now know how pilgrims feel! There was a light on upstairs
and I though sorely tempted to knock on the door and mention Ronnie - I was actually burning to know if the present occupiers knew of their famous prevoious owner - an evening in Maidenhead nick didn't appeal so i contented myself to merely
stare at the house and imagine Ronnie and Barbro there and how happy they must have once been.
Anyone else have any other anecdotes concerning F1 dwellings?
Didn't Senna live in a bungalow somewhere in Norfolk?

I remember reading somewhere that Kimi Raikkonen used to live in Chigwell in East London for a while. Not sure if he does anymore though...

Motor Sport magazine used to feature a picture of the homes of famous racing drivers each month. Not sure how long it ran for, but they're in the 1972/73 issues I have. I remember Denny Hulme's pad was quite futuristic looking (for the time).

Allegedly, a couple of streets away from me when I lived in Cambridge, Rubens Barrichello had a house - this was in the Stewart days. Nobody ever confirmed it.
James Allen, on his favourite F1 engine of all time:

Not F1, but this reminds me of Shola Ameobi's appearance on MTV Cribs. Needless to say, it was utter utter crap.
"This is the car I use on nice days.....and this is the car I drive when it isn't so nice."
Anyway, I would hate to see F1 drivers ending up on that show. Everything is done in poor taste, the editing is trashy, and generally it's quite a boring show from the small amount of clips I've seen of it.

He seems to have moved around a fair bit, although towards the end of his life he spent quite a bit of his time in Portugal (mainly because he would not be disturbed as much).
On a more modern note, I believe that most of the drivers on the grid are now officially resident in Monaco or Switzerland (for tax purposes) - I do recall that Glock once did a piece on the BBC's website about the Monaco GP from the flat he owns there (where he pointed to the neighbouring apartment block and pointed out where a number of other drivers have properties), and IIRC Chandhok mentioned that Bruno Senna put him up during the Monaco GP weekend.
That said, there are a few drivers who live in the UK because their teams are based there - Webber lives in Aylesbury, whilst Hulkenberg IIRC still lives in the UK (he did move to the UK when he got the job with Williams, and I believe that he stayed on when he switched to Force India).
Martin Brundle, on watching a replay of Grosjean spinning:
"The problem with Grosjean is that he want to take a look back at the corner he's just exited"

If I recall correctly, it was either Buemi or Glock that spent some time living in Bahrain as well.

Don't Jenson Button and Andy Priaux live in Guernsey, the former for tax purposes, the latter because he's a native?

Re: F1 driver's homes
I'm sure I remember Louise Goodman going to interview a driver who lived in Britain back when F1 was on ITV during a pre-race show. I forget who it was though I'm tempted to say Alguersuari because I remember him having decks and a load of DJ equipment there, but he didn't drive until 2009. Maybe Liuzzi?

Actually I have it on good authority Jenson has since moved off the island (I think because of practicality issues with F1 or similar). It was Andy who introduced Jenson to Guernsey as the two are good friends but aside from the obvious theoretical tax benefits Jense was originally keen on the place for it's beauty and secluded-ness.

I remember an interview in the ITV years in a London flat with Heikki Kovalainen (I think it was him anyway) Maybe this is what you were thinking of?

Re: F1 driver's homes
I know M$ had a holiday house in Malta (my nationality). A relative of mine lived on same road. The German was spotted there only once or twice a year though, him and his dog on his private jet.
This was 10 years ago or so!

Miserable Thierry (Boutsen) staggers round mostly on ten cylinders (out of 12) with no clutch, low oil pressure, bad brakes and no grip to finish tenth, 3 laps down...
(Murray Walkers review of Boutsen's Brazil 1991 race).
Thats a point these days!
