F1 Rejects Robot Wars

Post by Londoner »

Yes, we really are scraping the bottom of the barrel for new championships

If you are around my age, or older, you might remember a programme on the BBC by the name of Robot Wars around a decade ago. As the name suggests, teams built their own robots and fought other robots for a chance to become the Grand Champion. I remember watching it like a religion every Friday night, cheering on my favourites (which always used to end in disaster :( ) and booing the House Robots. Nowadays, I look back over the later series with a feeling of indifference. Basically, I feel after the 3rd Wars, the show got too popular. People started spending ridiculous amounts of money on robots, the show became gimmicky, and eventually it killed it. I mean, why have a sodding Refbot for HWNSNBM's sake! That reduced the House Robots to bit players, where previously they'd been brilliantly villanous, getting involved and changing the course of a match. And why only open the pit at the end of a match, when previously it was left open. The last series (which was broadcast on Channel 5 in 2003-04) was a complete shambles. Most of the famous robots (Hypno-Disc, Chaos 2 and Razer) had retired, most of the remaining robots were stupidly expensive, and there was a allegation of match fixing in order to make a certain robot not become the Champion.

That said, I still look back at the first three series as shining examples. No gimmicks, family teams and garage enthusiasts rather than rich geeks, most of the robots being built in a shed or something. And no refbot. I remember Chaos 2, the only double champion being built for a total cost of £250, rather than the £5000+ of the robots in the last series.

And so, I've come up with an idea involving Robot Wars and F1 Rejects. Basically, members can enter their own robot(s) under a name of a reject team/driver, or their own name. I'll run the championship (using paper, pencil and dice, because I'm retro  ) with heats between robots, and we'll have a champion reject. The rounds will either be a challenge such as robot football, tug of war with a house robot, a time trial and a few fights, depending on what I feel like including.

So, let the wars begin! *

*The earliest I can run this will be May 25th, after my final AS-exam, so I'm just gauging interest at the moment. I'll post a specification list a little later on.

And the big question is do you, the members of the F1 Rejects forums, think this is a good idea, or one doomed to failure?

YES! Easily used to be one of my favourite shows on TV at the time, and I agree that after series 4 certainly, the whole thing went off the rails. Incidentally I went to school with two kids who were related to the family who built Hypno-Disc, and the team were actually from Banbury, despite the announcer saying they were from Oxford on the TV. Obviously Chaos 2 was my favourite though! :D

Yes, yes, YES! Robot Wars was SO F***ING AWESOME. My favourite robot was Diotoir by far. It always always always caught fire

As much as I like the TV series though, this series doesn't seem to make much sense? Pen and paper? Dice? What? No flames or axes? I'm confused...

It's like Tommy's recreating history championships. Basically, I decide what happens in a match using dice, and I record what happens on paper with each roll. That way, the results are completely random.

And yes, there will be flames and axes. Just you wait. ;)

Some say it was banned for being too effective, armed with a powerful Flipper, though with questionable driving skills, it is the:

I will be entering the David Kennedy Diotoir Destructor! It's quite slow, doesn't have any weapons and catches fire a lot. Oh, and it's constructed from bits of old Trabants, so it flips over constantly.

I'd like to enter AndreaDisk, a suspicious black robot cobbled together from bits of boots lying around the workshop. It will be equipped witha rear circular saw and wet tyres

The MRT engine workshop will enter the WMB (Weapon of Mass Bulls***) after Mr Melrose found an idea for getting rid of the project the guys at the workshop were doing when they should have been making proper engines.

Wait a minute - wasn't there a Flash game like this some years ago? I remember very well building my own crappy robot and then desperately trying to fight it against much better opponents. That must've been like 2005 or 2006 or something around that? In any case I might enter to this, but not just yet - I'm currently quite intoxicated (Labor Day celebrations and all), so at the moment I'm not entirely responsible of whatever I happen to write.

There was also a Playstation 2 game I still own, called Robot Wars Extreme or something like that. I could swear there was a boss level with a Russian dude with a name eerily similar to Zoran Stefanovic, launching a nuclear weapon at the UK...yes, this was a game about ROBOT WARS. Don't know what they were thinking.

There was two Robot Wars video games released back in the day. I used to have both of them, but they've long since vanished off the face of the earth.

I'll make a list of entries tomorrow. The minimum that I need for the first series is 18 entries...

In fact, after a few seconds of googling, I found it - it was Robot Rage, which still seems to be hosted by MiniClip after all these years. And it didn't use Flash, but instead ShockWave - the mid-2000s 3D version of Flash, before Flash got developed enough to have its own 3D technology. Oh, those were the days...

I'll consider my entry again when I'm sober enough (which will be in about 12 hours).

Ha, Diotoir was class. My favourite robot had to be Plunderbird, the equivalent to rejects, the robots were pretty bad all the time, and the team were entertaining as f**k!

I remember when they had other challenges before the fighting as well, and Jeremy Clarkson hosting the show.

Do you remember how pathetic Humphrey was? It very very slowly drove around the arena before the motor broke and got smashed to pieces by the house robots. It didn't try attacking anyone

If you don't, just watch this pathetic showing. If there ever were a candidate for ultimte Robot Wars Reject, this has to be it.

Robot Wars thread. Me Gusta.

Can I enter HypnoDisc, it was probably the most entertaining robot to watch on the show.

I have the perfect combination.

Giorgio Francia's Flippin' Marvellous Squealing Wonder is a robot which is basically a huge, gas-powered flipper on wheels, a bit like Chaos 2 was. It pays tribute to a heroic F1 reject who managed two DNQs out of two entries, separated by two years, and also to George Francis, the helium-voiced designer of Chaos 2. So, that's all the twos, and let us not forget, 22 is the number on one of the HRTs, for extra rejectfulness.

I see your Humphrey, and I raise you... I think it was called Swamp Thing. It was made by hippies, it had no armour and looked like it was made out of coat hangers and bare wires. It met a dreadful fate in its first outing and nobody was surprised.

I also remember the first opponent Hypno-Disc ever faced was rather flimsily made. Bad move.
