Saving WRC (2006 - Present)

Post by Benetton »

Okay so I watched some full WRC season reviews on Youtube the other day and it reminded me what a great series it was in the years of 2000 to 2005. Unfortunately after 2006 it started to go downhill and fast. I hope to write here a better WRC than what actually took place. I won't write long reports on races, you wouldn't like it anyway since my English grammar is far from polished, but rather make realistic simulations based on the real life results. Foremost I will do this for my own pleasure.

First, lets start with the 2005 season and that in Wales Rally GB Markko Martin did crash out but Michael Park, though injured, survived and only took the following two rallies of, making his return to the 307 with Markko at the last round in Australia. Loeb won the 2005 championship and Citroen the manufacturers title as in real life. Citroen decide to not take a sabbatical year although they announce that in 2006 they will run a third car (for Dani Sordo) prepared exclusively by Kronos Racing. PSA decide to pull out Peugeot from the championship at the end of 2005 and focus the Peugeot branding on endurance racing. Mitsubishi announce they won't have a team in 2006 either.

Here is the manufacturers 2006 line up. Won't bother to post the privateers.

CITROEN TOTAL WRT - Xsara WRC

#1 Sebastien Loeb (FRA) b. 1974
#2 Marcus Gronholm (FIN) b. 1968
#X Dani Sordo (ESP) b. 1983

In major off season news Citroen sack Duval and replace him with Gronholm on a 2 year deal, who comes from the PSA family having driven for the now extinct Peugeot. Citroen hope to dominate the championship now and in the future and this is arguably one of the strongest line ups in rallying ever. Loeb's expertise on sealed surfaces combined with Gronholm's loose surface experience could make Citroen's next WRC car, the C4, which is introduced in 2007, a huge success. JWRC champion Dani Sordo will drive a Kronos prepared Xsara and all the rounds in 2006.

BP FORD WORLD RALLY TEAM - Focus WRC

#3 Markko Martin (EST) b. 1975
#4 Toni Gardemeister (FIN) b. 1975

Malcom Wilson signs Martin back from Peugeot and re-signs Gardemeister who has been with the team in 2005 developing the brand new 06 spec Focus. Much is expected from Markko as he arguably reached his best success in late 2003, early 2004 with the Ford. Gardemeister is as a solid no. 2 as one can get and can suprise on certain events.

SUBARU WORLD RALLY TEAM - Impreza WRC

#5 Petter Solberg (NOR) b. 1974
#6 Chris Atkinson (AUS) b. 1979
#X Stephane Sarrazin (FRA) b. 1975 (Tarmac events only)

Subaru continue with the formidable line up of Mr. Hollywood and Atkinson while maintaining Sarrazin for the seasons early tarmac rounds atleast. The latest word from Subaru management is that they find much more potential in Atkinson than in an F1 Reject and therefore Sarrazin's seat could be in danger if he doesn't perform.

RED BULL SKODA - Fabia WRC

#7 Francois Duval (BEL) b. 1980
#8 Jan Kopecky (CZE) b. 1982
#X Andreas Aigner (AUT) b. 1984

Skoda Motorsport sing a major sponsorship deal with Red Bull. Armin Schwarz retires from driving but retains within the team in management capacity. Skoda signs Duval and Kopecky. Both young and in Duval's case relatively experienced. Duval needs to rebound from a horrible 2005 where he crashed his Xsara way too often. Kopecky is a bit of unknown quantity but has shown speed on occasions. As part of Red Bull sponsorship their third driver will be Austrian Andreas Aigner who has some moderate results from the PWRC.

OMV PEUGEOT NORWAY - 307 WRC

#9 Manfred Stohl (AUT) b. 1972
#10 Henning Solberg (NOR) b. 1973

Manfred and Henning put their heads together (and wallets) together and buys the 307's from Peugeot. The 307, while not the best car ever, can certainly make an occasional impression.

STOBART VK FORD RALLY TEAM - Focus WRC

#11 Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) b. 1980
#12 Matthew Wilson (GBR) b. 1987

Daddy Wilson wants his son to get a drive so he gathers some sponsorship and creates a Ford Jr. team. Impressed with Hirvonen's late 2005 performances in a Fabia WRC and the podium in Spain, he decides to give him a chance again and drafts him as the team leader. Son Matthew will get the second seat by default.

Some privateers that could make a impact this season are Galli, Pons and Bengue.

I hope this turns out to be an interesting topic to read; Loeb and Gronholm in the same team might be a Senna-Prost-ish conflict!

I doubt it. Gronholm doesn't have the inflated ego necessary for such a rivalry. If Benetton writes it in a way that he actually does have a giant ego, I shall resent him forever!!

Also, Galli needs to be the most regular privateer, I still remember him skiing down a set of stairs

It'd be like a potential Alonso/Raikkonen pairing, where one whinges and the other just doesn't care.

A very good idea! In fact, this idea is so good that I'm gonna attempt something similar to that. Because in my opinion, this forum needs some alternate racing history scenarios.

With this alternate version of events, with Ford not having a world class driver like Gronholm I expect their ineptitude to shine through and Gronholm win more titles that he fully deserved had his team been as professional as Citroen.

Marcus Gronholm = GOD.

Shame Peugeot doesn't continue though, I thought the 307 WRC, while relatively uncompetitive, was really a beautiful car.

Sebastien Loeb set the pace straight away but slid out on a patch of ice on the last stage on Friday. He was able to continue on super rally rules on saturday but had his plate full trying to regain places, finishing third. Gronholm had a good, steady rally, putting some very promising times in the Xsara on some stages. Gardemeister, a driver who likes the Monte, finished second for the second year running and could fend off Loeb on the last day. Stohl had a good rally while Martin's car suffered from electrical glitches, losing him time.

Gronholm winning a rally he usually hates and struggles at? This is a good sign :D

Well to be honest he showed extremely good pace in 2003, would have probably finished on the podium had he not crashed out. And he won in 2006 for real as well. I would say MG hated the wet tarmac rallies the most (like Germany), I remember one particular interview where he literally cursed the conditions (2006?), but he still drove well on them (Germany 2003 comes to mind). With Ice + Tarmac I think he kind of excelled, certainly faster than P Solberg.

Jim Clark said he hated Spa-Francorchamps. But we all know he bossed at it. Gronholm may hate several rallies and certain conditions, but regardless, he was still great at them :)

Loeb drove a near perfect rally. Error free and still blisteringly quick. Martin, who finished second, came close but could not mount a consistent challenge to Loeb even though the gap at the end was only around 20 seconds. Petter Solberg lead after friday, 10 seconds clear of Loeb, even though Mr. Hollywood sufferend from cooling issues. On Saturday though Solberg got a one minute service penalty, relating to the cooling problems he suffered on Friday.

Italian Galli got a Pirelli backed 307 under him and his speed was evident. Duval drove steadily, opening his points account. Gardemeister, Sordo and Stohl all suffered small mechanical issues. But worst of was Gronholm who, while being first on the road on friday, hit a large rock hid in a bush. Rumour was some spectators had placed it there. He damaged his suspension and roadside repairs in the middle of the stage lost him about 15 minutes. Marcus made the finish of that stage but had to retire on the next, leading to more super rally penalties. He posted good times on Saturday and Sunday but he had slid too far back.

I'll certainly consider it since there seems to be a demand from the public to return them ;) Any driver suggestions?

Unless you move him up to a better team, Gigi Galli to return! And maybe a rotating second seat like Duval/Carlsson/Sarrazin?

Something along those lines yeah. Maybe Gardemeister if Ford decides to promote Hirvonen? Galli is certainly a candidate since he has Pirelli backing and previous experience with the Mitsubishi RT. Sarrazin is avalaible since Subaru will probably sack him and prefer to develop Atkinson on tarmac. Duval will probably continue with Red Bull Skoda in 07.

Well I'm not trying to make this unrealistic so

I mean Citroen in this alternative reality has one of the best and reliable rally cars ever (Xsara) and two of the best drivers at that moment in the world (Loeb, Gronholm) and a stable management unlike Malcolm Wilson and M-Sport or the stuff that happened at Subaru at that time (when Lapworth got fired the team was a mess and it took a while for Subaru to recover).

Xsara > Focus
Gronholm Loeb > Martin Gardemeister
Citroen Management > M-Sport

no wonder they are walking away with it. But Martin still has two wins here.
