2012 comment: The first lap nutcase

Post by eytl »

Hi everyone,

Romain Grosjean's fracas with Mark Webber at Suzuka was too good to pass up. I know it's only a week after the Perez article, but here's another 2012 comment, looking at Romain's litany of first (or second) lap incidents ... and there are plenty of 'em, dating back to his first GPs back in 2009!

http://www.f1rejects.com/centrale/2012/grosjean/index.html

We think we've got some answers for Grosjean's problems. We may know nothing about driving an F1 car, but nothing's going to stop us from lobbing in some helpful insights for the man with no vowels.

Cheers,
Enoch

More articles is never a problem. Anyway, good insightful writeup as always. I like how you say in what manner he should actually change, instead of just stating what everyone already knows like everyone else seems to do.

Precisely, it's my replacement for the race reviews.

And what of Andrea de Cesaris, who damaged his machinery so often that teams could barely afford to keep him on, but who in the early 1990s transformed himself at Jordan, Tyrrell and Sauber to also become a dependable pilot whom teams looked to as an experienced hand?

De Cesaris is still known for crashing out too often... and for winning F1Reject's "What Mirrors?" Award

Jody Sheckter was also driver in his early years that was greatly disliked by the paddock due his crashing. Particularly the big pileup he caused at the 1973 British GP, in which the Grand Prix Drivers Association demanded he'd be banned from the sport. It was so bad that McLaren had to sit him out for four races. But once he joined Tyrrell in 1974, he soon matured, and became a much more consistent, and conservative driver. In the previous two years with McLaren, in which he scored no points, in 1974, he took two wins, along with three other podiums, to finish 3rd in the drivers championship. He would eventually go on to do the three things nearly every F1 driver would want in their career. A win at Monaco, a win at his home race, and a world championship, all of which he did in less than a decade. Sometimes with inferior equipment.

I hope for Grosjean's sake that he can turn this around and become a dependable pair of hands like de Cesaris and Patrese. It's whether he will have time. With so many good drivers vying for seats, he needs to sort himself out fast. Another season like this one and he'll be gone. Good piece as always though.
Maria De Villotta will forever be badass. Rest in Peace.
Pulling for Schumi and Jules.

Thank you Enoch for your excellent article about the Man Without Vowels' first lap antics. It's been long overdue he realized is not won at the start. I've always kind of liked the guy but since his crasheritis got heavier early in the year, I have just turned away, shaking my head in disbelief. Given the repair bill, it's fairly understandable if the Team Formerly Known as Renault were to replace him with a more Heidfeldian driver.

Another question: RMN GRSJN surely is high up there in the lead of this season's Nosecone Championship, or isn't he?

Well you don't get a point if you retire in the incident so i don't think Grosjean will be as high as you might think

Oh, I forgot about that. It's been too long since there was no Nosecone championship has been posted.
