Well, turns out I didn't have to improve that much to get a good starting position. However, it looks like I can't match the pace of the top four teams, at least on a single lap.

A quite dull race, a good start promoted me 5th, which turned into 4th and then 3rd as Senna and Patrese fell out. I was able to hold off the Benettons easily, and the gap to Prost didn't grow too much. The leading pack pitted very late on for fresh tyres, however as my hard tyres still had some mileage left in them I decided to go through the whole race without pitting. I was momentarily promoted to 1st, but Berger put on such a charge with his new soft rubber that I had no chance of holding him back without risking the whole race, so I settled for 2nd.

I was able to improve a bit by setting the car more towards straightline speed rather than cornering. Nice to see Tarquini not being last, although he is sandwiched between two drivers who had to go through prequalifying.

Well, that was a short race. I had a good start and managed to get up to 5th by the end of the first lap. And there I stayed, until on lap 8 I made a mistake at Sachkurve and crashed into the barriers. I was able to limp to the pits but the suspension was too damaged and I had to retire.

1991 Mod + patches/updates. Note that this contains the SoundPack needed for the 89-91 mods.

Also, there's a minor error in the 1989 Zakspeed's "Yamaha.sfx" file, as it refers to a folder called "89Sound" which does not exist even with all the patches installed. Just use Notepad's find & replace function to change all those references to "91Sound" so you should have proper engine sounds in the Zakspeed.

Go to SeasonData/Vehicles, and open the team you want to edit (for example, Tyrrell). Then open up the folder for the car from the season you want to edit (again for example 1989_018). There you should find the .VEH files. Open up one of them in Notepad and edit the "Classes" section. If you just want to remove the car from a particular season you only have to remove one number/letter from the last part (so for example change "1989" to read "198"). Getting prequalifying to work is similar, only differing in that you have to create a separate "season" for it and make sure that the filter name doesn't include the name of a whole season (so for 1989 prequalifying I use "89PQ" as the filter, then change it to "1989PQ" for all cars that qualify for the main qualifying).

Firstly, the download links for all mods except the 89/90/91 seasons don't work, could you re-upload them with working download links please? Secondly, I've downloaded and am using the 1990 mod in your first post, but there are a few issues. Whilst all cars and tracks are there and work fine, as do tyres and sounds, having 35 cars on the track causes issues. For example, when I start a race, there's usually many retirements at the first lap, because the AI seem to crash into each other for some reason on the first corner or straight. Secondly, the cars do not start at their designated locations, rather they start at random locations past car 22, in order of course, but sometimes on the grass or off the track if the straight is too short. And also, when qualifying with 35 cars, pitting is an issue as the cars do not seem to pit correctly but instead park in the pit lane, leading to blockages where cars can't enter or exit the pits 9so are unable to complete any laps), or drive straight through the pit lane, or cause crashes, so only half or so of the cars do laps. And finally, I've noticed this on Phoenix but potentially other tracks have the same problem, the AI for some reason cut corners (it's a street circuit so this means hitting a barrier), or crash into walls and lose a wing, or they get stuck in the run off areas and become unable to reverse out to escape.


If you know of any times when these problems have occurred with the 1990 mod besides my own, or know of a fix to them, I'd greatly appreciate it.

The links are dead because RaceSimulations shut down a few months ago. You can find some of the mods by Googling, but some are lost forever. Race4Sim is a good place to start. I could reupload them myself, but I'm not home at the moment (relying on a mobile connection) and my storage space on most file sharing sites is used up by other files.

Most of the problems you described are caused by the tracks not being designed for 30+ cars - for example, if the track hasn't got enough grid locations defined in the AIW, then the game will generate the rest of them with no regard to the actual track or its objects. And even when there are enough grid spots, the game still has a hard time trying to handle more than 21 AI cars at the same time because it was not designed for that.This was one of the main reasons why I ran prequalifying here before I abandoned the career due to lack of interest. I also have an AIW fix for Phoenix that reduces the amount of accidents, but due to reasons stated above I cannot share it at the moment.

Crash King's mod should work, as I've used it before. What operating system are you using? On Windows 7 you have to use Win98 compatibility mode, otherwise the game will crash.

Try adding "-trace=1000" (without the quotation marks) at the end of the target field in the F1 Challenge shortcut. Now, every time you start up the game, it generates a log file called trace.txt. into the LOG folder. From that you should find out if any of the files are missing or in the wrong location. If you have trouble spotting the error, just copypaste the contents of the trace file here.

Of course, using compatibility mode on XP doesn't hurt either, but if the game has worked properly before installing the mod, then that is not a viable fix.

Ah yes, there has to be a space between the file path and the trace command,otherwise Windows thinks that -trace=1000 is a part of the file's name. Try this:

Okay, well I did as you said. This is the trace file I've copied from the LOG directory, after I tried to do a standalone 95 Race at Interlagos, with me in a Simtek (Verstappen), at 20% race length and 95% difficulty, and a few other settings like manual braking and so on. Interestingly, whilst the default AI drivers was 35 (I set it to that for the 1990 Season), when I changed it 25 for the 95 test I just did, I couldn't increase it back to 35. There. That bit is crucial. For whatever reason the mod doesn't have all textures it should have, and unfortunately F1C does not like missing textures at all and CTDs every time when that happens. A temporary fix is to simply make blank 8x8 pixel BMP files and save them into the correct location (in this case, the main Vehicles folder, except for the lollipop textures which go to each car's own folder) with the appropriate names. And yes, the trace file is overwritten every time you start up the game, so if the game still CTDs after these fixes you could try looking at the trace file again to see if there's more missing files.

Finally, try setting pitcrew animation detail to low. All of the above errors seem to refer to pitcrew textures, so it might help.

You have to manually edit the AI number to get it back to 35.

Yep. F1C wasn't originally designed for more than 21 AI opponents, so the menu item for it is somehow "locked" so that you cannot increase it beyond 21, and only decrease it if it's manually made higher in then PLR file.

Thanks for indirectly helping me too, I didn't know about trace=1000. Although I never bothered adding a shortcut before. It's helped get a 1993 mod to work, which is good especially because I HATE the rFactor 1993 mod.

Yeah, that's right. The CTDP Mod requires the converter and DM's mod is the one with all cars and tracks, but a broken DL link. If you could share that, I'd be very grateful, if not, no worries. As an aside, the fact I can't have a 26 car championship is only a minor inconvenience, because I can still do 26 car races, so I'll need to take note of the results individually. Stupid, but nothing can be done about it. I'll just do 26 car races and take notes.


As an aside, Sophie Fabron is an insane driver. I mean, you play full race length (fair enough, I find this more fun anyway), but full damage as well (I don't, I'm invincible, but I'm not a maniac so I avoid all accidents, if I take someone out I do feel bad for it, and it is accidental), and 100% difficulty (I play at around 92%), and yet you can still perform really well, in a bloody AGS of all! I drove a Minardi in 1999, on 90% on a full length race with 3 retirements at Interlagos and was pleased to finish 6th, and I was invincible (I'd have probably retired or at least lost a wing if not). So I know I'm by far not the best. So, in short, congratulations. You're either really skilled, or the AGS ain't a bad car, or you just know all the best setups. Either way, extremely well done!

Which mod are you using? The problem is is that this game was designed for 22 cars so anything more can cause issues, but that said the 95 mod I'm using with 26 cars has no problems, and the AI works fine. However, the 90 mod has 36 cars, and the AI constantly crash into walls on street circuits or fail to pit (meaning Qualifying is a joke and races don't really work). It could be the AI, or you may have too many cars.

This, in most of the cases has nothing to do with the number of the cars. If the car simply leaves the track and crashes (typically in Monaco and Montreal), that's because of the physics of the mod you're using. The AI was designed for the stock physics of the 99-02 cars with high gripping tires and wings, with no serious over- or understeer. Mods from the 90s or earlier however simulate the physics of the cars of that particular season. David Marques' mods are fine examples of how much the cars changed from year to year. AI has serious difficulties handling the cars with such different characteristics and thus, the cars often can't stay on track.
You have three options to solve the issue: A) lower AI strength and aggression, B) lower the damage multiplier, or C) modify the racing line on the critical parts of the track AIW file. This doesn't work in Monaco however, as there is no room on that track to modify the best line.
Personally I modified the racing line for the tracks in question. It is the best option because on some tracks cars leave the line too wide and lose a lot of time, and they are very easy to beat. When I arrive to Monaco, I edit the damage file, so the cars become virtually indestructible, and so the AI has no problem.

Well, I have to admit that as a keyboard racer, I had to rely heavily on driver aids such as traction control which obviously helps a lot. The AGS isn't as bad as it should be - I am not a setup guru yet there were only few tracks where I had to utilise the practise sessions a lot to improve my times through a good setup. Finally, the tyre wear obviously didn't work as it should; I'm quite fast on a single lap, but very poor at tyre management. Yet I was able to put in qualifying-style laps consistently without any significant penalty.

Had the career progressed, you would've seen the first race where I would've really struggled: Hungary. I was well off the pace in the practise sessions and wouldn't have even made it past prequalifying!

You play David Marques' mod. The AI is very easy to beat, even on 100%, because it can't control the cars on an optimal level. You have to increase the difficulty as high as 115-120% to meet a real hardcore challenge. Another thing about David's mods is that they are not perfectly balanced. Sure, they work fine when only AI cars are on the track (some mods, like '95 ends with weird results even with only AIs), but a player can easily beat it without some additional modding.
I rebalanced the '94 mod completely, the AI works almost perfectly on every track and even so I managed to make a steady midfielder / fast backmaker of Pacific on 120% difficulty with 100% aggression and 100% damage.

Mainly the David Marques mods (89,90,91,92,93,94 and 95) and crash kings 97' mod.

I managed to make cars stay on the track due to changing the grip values of both the cars and the tracks. Only Monaco and Montreal still cause serious issues now. But that is still two tracks that can't be used.

I am not fond of making the cars indestructible because that "doesn't happen" in real racing either. :p

Besides lack of tracks, CK 95 mod works fine, the AI are intelligent and work as expected. And the game can handle 26 cars, except for the championships issue. The 90 mod I have doesn't really work, the AI crash too much. So, is DM's 95 mod the best or is there one better? And does it require further changes?
