Well, I'm mostly interested in what teams all the hate would be shoveled upon. I can see Red Bull and Ferrari drawing equal amounts of hate among F1 teams, Gainsco and Ganassi for GrandAm, IndyCar would be a bit more wide open, because you have Penske, Ganassi, Andretti, Panther, and KV with a history of questionable behavior...

I assume Newman-Haas would be included in that if they were still around?

It is an undeniable fact that Dale Coyne fielded a lot of crap drivers with money over the years but it allowed to stay in business and to eventually be able to field decent drivers and get some decent results. I have a lot of respect for Dale Coyne.

At this point I think we can call Mr. Coyne IndyCar's Frank Williams at least in the terms of how the racing team started and the nature of the first Frank Williams team. But things weren't always this great as he had revolving doors of pay drivers and one-off rides. Some of the pay drivers rapidly improved such as Michel Jourdain Jr., Paul Tracy, Oriol Servia, and Alex Barron and were able to progress to better teams creating the revolving door image as these drivers were hired away afterwards. Others like Charlie Nearburg were bad enough that no amount of money could keep them around as it would attract the ire of the race marshals. I respect him for the persistence in particular. It's hard for most to stay motivated when the team has to wait 25 years for the first win. His heart and soul is definitely in racing.

Dale Coyne is the Minardi of IndyCar. Not to mention that the team is based 45 minutes away from where I live, making them one of my favorites by default. Newman-Haas is based 30 minutes away from me, so I've been a fan of them for the same reason, really. :lol:

Just started rewatching the 1994 San Marino GP. After the startline crash between JJ Lehto and Pedro Lamy, Murray Walker said that he was expecting the race to be red-flagged (with the safety car having only been used twice previously, according to Murray's memory). So my question is:

What if the race were red-flagged? Would Bruno Senna have made his debut sooner? Would he have been a better driver for being able to learn from his uncle?

Oh, and a follow-up question. Erik Comas was let out of the pit-lane and drove round to Tamburello while Ayrton Senna was being treated by medical staff. He was traumatised by what he saw so withdrew from the race.

What if he restarted? Would he have been DSQed? Should he have received some other penalty? Should Larrouse have been penalised for allowing him out?

What if BAR had kept Villeneuve on for 2004? Would his race winning experience have helped BAR take their maiden win that year, or would he have just been truly rejectful?

Well, he was lucky in the sense that Ferrari checkmated Schumacher out of the equation by not stopping him under the SC for Alonso (before Montoya helped remove him from the race altogether) but Jarno was definitely on it all weekend.

Wait - Villeneuve had a good reputation in 03? That's news to me :lol:


It had been damaged, but Button would have completely killed, buried and cremated it in 2004. He was a former World Champion and was also one of the top drivers in 2000, so he did still have some credibility

Given the relative performance of the car and the fact that Warwick had a respectable enough run of points finishes up until that year, perhaps he could have picked up a couple of podium finishes and a handful of other points finishes, probably putting him around where Johansson and Rosberg finished that year.

Let me try:

Bourdais and Tracy quickly move away from the rest of the field, only for the two crashing into each other. Tracy is furious, and storms the Newman-Haas pits. There, he proceeds to punch the lights out of Tracy, only for him to be taken away from the police. Meanwhile, your typical pay drivers cause crash after caution after crash, while calmly driving Bruno Junqueira takes the checkered flag. Meanwhile, the Prince of Monaco ponders why he let F1 go from Monaco.

Well I can only see this happening if it were a support event with F1, I just can't see Monaco being gridlocked twice a year.
With this in mind it would naturally create better synergy between the two sports and as a result many fans of one would begin to support the other, to the benefit of all.

Perhaps it would have provided an opportunity for CART drivers to impress F1 bosses and secure a seat, most notably Bourdais maybe would have got in to F1 earlier, perhaps a 2006 Toro Rosso seat or maybe even something crazy like a McLaren drive after Montoya leaves.

I don't think the races would be all that thrilling and I can imagine it being similar to GP2 level of incidents, perhaps the biggest impact would be the influx of loud brash Americans in to "classy" Monaco, don't suppose the royal family there would be too keen on that, but the tourism board would gladly take their money in the casinos! (I hope I haven't offended anyone)

Nothing drastic such as Champcar being saved unfortunately, Indycar would not want to race in Monaco after Champ Car finishes and that would be that.

What if Damon Hill scored pole position for the 1997 European GP? I've just read somewhere that he was on track to beat the lot of them to pole position before encountering yellow flags covering Ukyo Katayama's Minardi during his fastest lap.

I'd say not much different to reality - he went backwards in the race before he retired. Either that or he would have purposely blocked Schumacher to try and let Villeneuve get away. Either way JV still wins the championship. :)

In a less serious question - what if the following street circuits from Gran Turismo tracks were real?

  • Seattle Circuit
  • Rome Circuit (both GT2/GT3 and GT5 versions)
  • Tokyo R246
  • Seoul Central
  • New York (GT4)
  • Hong Kong Street Circuit (GT4)
  • Opera Paris
  • Madrid (GT5)
  • London (GT5)

What races would be held in those circuits? What will be the results? :lol:

Seattle, Rome, and Madrid are my favorite street circuits. I think the Streets of Baltimore circuit reminds me a lot of the Seattle Circuit for some reason.

Having been inspired by Enoch's latest article, I have a few questions for you guys to ponder over:

1. What if Christian Fittipaldi got the second McLaren seat for 1995 at the request of Mercedes?
2. What if Williams lost their case at the C.R.B over David Coulthard?
3. What if, by some sheer miracle, the Mansell/McLaren relationship managed to hold together for the entire 1995 season?

1. Christian would have not ran in 2nd in the Indy 500 that year pushing the likes of Gugelmin, Rahal, and Salazar up a position. Emerson Fittipaldi may have started 33rd presuming that the replacement failed to qualify. Emmo might have charged up the field like Scott Goodyear in 1992 or Tom Sneva in 1980 from dead last considering that Bobby Rahal started 21st behind Gugelmin in both speed and position just to finish in 3rd, three positions in front of Gugelmin.
2. I don't know
3. Al Unser Jr. in F1 by to keep Marlboro knowing that Al Jr was an instant F1 superlicense approval by being 2nd in CART points and drove Marlboro sponsored Penskes. Mansell getting the car good enough to contend? Too many possibilities with situation #3.

2. Patrese back at Williams? Blundell maybe, since he was test driver before? Perhaps Frentzen 2 seasons early?
